From Beyond the Great (Fire)wall
Last week, on the day I received my visa, the Chinese embassy in Washington, D.C., gave me an ultimatum."If you 'commit journalism,' before you pick up your press credentials," they told me, "you can be detained or deported."
Those last two options need no real elaboration - other than to possibly mention that, yes, freedanoshinsky.com is still available - but when the embassy started talking about "committing journalism," I found myself asking a surprisingly existentialist question, at least among those of us who work in ink: what kind of journalism will we exactly be committing in Beijing?
The short answer: We're not really sure yet.
Now, that's not to say that we don't have a whole lot of ideas. For the next two months, you'll be seeing regular dispatches here on the blog and in print. There will be text and audio and - provided that the gods of bandwidth have blessed this here hotel-provided Ethernet cord - video. But most of all, we'll be trying to bring you as many faces of these Games and of China as we can.
There are some 15 million people in Beijing; add a couple of zeros to get the entire population of this country. But at this very moment, typing these words from Beijing, it's tough to even comprehend the size of this place. We'll do our best to humanize those numbers, to bring you voices that are shaping this country through August and beyond.
Most of all, we're excited to hear what you're thinking about China and what you'd like to know. We'll try to get the answers to you.
As for introductions, I'll make this one brief: hi, my name is Dan. I'll be committing journalism and desperately avoiding deportation for you here over the coming weeks. Hope you enjoy.

Danny: all the best. We're looking to you to commit some serious and fun journalism. I told your dad that my first thought about your intro piece was to leave the existential stuff to Jim McKay, but now that he's indisposed, it's your remarkable and extraordinary turn. So, go to it, bro. We know you'll make the most of it.
All the best,
Joel

Danny--I am so enjoying your reporting from Beijing. You're highlighting stories that don't regularly get covered, but give us a real sense of what is going on over there. I know you're anxious for your press creditials (which you may have gotten by now), but in the meantime, we can read the sports stories in all of the newspapers. Personally, I'm fascinated with what you're doing. So hang in there and keep up the good work! We miss you here, but are unbelieveably proud of what you're accomplishing there! Love, Nancy
