Ad Watch: Know Yao? Sign here.

battier.jpgCongratuations, Maarty Leunen!  You've just been selected by the Houston Rockets with the 54th pick in the NBA Draft, one pick behind some guy from Serbia and one pick ahead of an NBDL player from Idaho.

You may now collect your Chinese shoe deal.

If you're wondering how a second round pick with an unusual name who didn't even make First Team All-Pac 10 as a senior could get a shoe deal over in China, just remember one word: Yao.

Yes, playing with China's biggest superstar has its perks.  Those of Yao's teammates just obscure enough to miss out on signing with Adidas, Nike, Reebok or any of the other American shoe giants have found Chinese companies eager to offer sneaker deals.

Shane Battier signed with Peak (watch his ad here, and even check out his official blog for Peak).  Steve Francis signed with Anta (I couldn't find his ad, but here's a 10 minute YouTube tribute titled, "Steve Francis: Chinese People Love You Forever").  Even Chuck Hayes - who boasts a career average of 3.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per game - has a deal with Li Ning.

At least Li Ning seems to understand how unknown some of these players are (perhaps due to their initial American signing, Damon Jones).  Here's Hayes' TV ad, in which the third-year forward goes up near the rim and.... grabs a rebound.

Then there's the curious case of Luis Scola.  Like Francis, he has a shoe deal with Anta (here's Scola's TV ad).  But this summer, he'll be playing for the Argentinean national team, which is signed to Li NIng.

It's enough to make you wish that the Swoosh was the only logo in town.

[And if you're wondering how all of these players feel about these deals, this blog post from The Salt Like Tribune is worth a read.]

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.
