Is Naked Push Up Man Crusading Against Police Corruption?
This is Ou Zhihang. He's a TV personality in the Guangdong province, and
currently, he's touring China, doing push ups while completely naked at
major landmarks throughout the country.Why is he doing this? That's a bit harder to figure out..
The state-issued line -- and yes, a naked TV host exercising in front of an Olympic Stadium has drawn official stances from the national government, via the state-owned media -- is that this guy is the Asian, voyeuristic Jack LaLanne.
But this month, while Zhihang is excercising naked, the country is suddenly buzzing about police corruption and the relevance of the phrase, "I'm here to do push ups."
Let me work backwards to explain. On July 2, in the city of Weng'an, thousands of people protested in front of government buildings:
Up to 30,000 people were involved in the protest, which was prompted by a police report into the death of 17-year-old Li Shufen. Police concluded she had drowned, but her family and relatives say she was raped and killed.
The protest turned violent and rioters mobbed government office buildings. More than 150 police and protesters were injured. About 160 offices and more than 40 vehicles were torched.
The protesters believe that Li Shufen was murdered based off this police report, which -- according to this translation from a Chinese newspaper -- states:
According to the investigation: At around 20:00 on June 21, Li Shufen and her girlfriend Wang went out. They had dinner along with Wang's boyfriend Chen and Chen's friend Liu. Afterwards, they strolled down to the bridge over Simen river to chat. During the chat, Li Shufen suddenly told Liu: "I might as well as kill myself by jumping into the river. But if I don't die, I will try to lead a good life afterwards." Liu immediately grabbed Li and stopped her from doing so. About 10 minutes later, Chen said that he was leaving. Liu saw that Li had calmed down and so he began to do push-ups. By the third one, Liu suddenly heard Li said: "I am leaving" and then she jumped into the river. Liu jumped in after her immediately. Wang phoned Chen and then she began to cry for help. Chen raced back to the riverside and jumped in to help search for Li. Liu was exhausted, so Chen had to drag him back to shore first. Wang and Liu called the police and notified Li's elder brother.
Which brings me to the issue of push ups. China's history of Internet censorship has been well publicized, but it's still very much a factor in the country. So when protesters first took to the Internet, insisting that Li Shufen was murdered, many of their websites were quickly blocked.
To get around this, people started prefacing any discussion of Li Shufen's death with the phrase "I'm here to do push ups," a strange reference to that odd line in the police report. The thinking was that the government would have a much harder time seeking out and blocking websites if people were using a more common phrase to discuss the incident.
Now, an important disclaimer: there is nothing on Ou Zhihang's blog that specifically discusses the death of Li Shufen, and I cannot find any specific link between the two. And yes, I do know that the Chinese are incredibly proud to be hosting the Olympic Games, so much so that one might be inclined to photograph himself entirely naked while exercising simply to glorify his country. Regardless, many Chinese are using his naked push up photos to keep their protests of Li Shufen's death going online.
It's certainly strange that the popularity of an esoteric reference to push ups and a naked man performing the same exercise around the country have entered China's collective conscience in the last two weeks. Perhaps Zhihang really is -- please excuse the pun -- showing some serious huevos with an unusual protest; or, maybe he's just being unwillingly used as the poster boy for an underground protest against the Chinese government.
No one ever said understanding this country would be easy.

If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.
