In big trouble

It goes without saying that the Avalanche needs to win both home games next week against the Red Wings -- as impossible as that seems right now -- for any chance to pull an upset in this series.

I knew this would be a difficult series for the Avalanche under the best of circumstances, which is why I picked the Red Wings to win in six games.

That sure looks optimistic at this point ... for the Avalanche, that is.

Jose Theodore, sick or whatever, has looked terrible, the Avalanche never seems to be able to control the puck for any significant amount of time, and Red Wings forward Johan Franzen has been unstoppable.

Maybe Peter Forsberg will play in Game 3. Maybe Scott Hannan will play in Game 3. Maybe the Avalanche will get "blanked off" -- coach Joel Quenneville's words -- about its plight and do something about it.

But unless things change drastically, this series has sweep written all over it.
