Thursday A.M. practice report

Safety John Lynch, who is expected to be released by the Broncos as soon as this afternoon, made a brief appearance at the team's Dove Valley complex after the morning workout to meet with coach Mike Shanahan.

Shanahan and Lynch will both discuss his departure from the team at 3:30 this afternoon.

In the morning workout, center Tom Nalen was held out with his sore left knee -- he had surgery on the knee in June -- and was expected to have a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam on the knee Thursday afternoon as a precaution.

Nalen is still experiencing pain in the bursa sac -- and area just below the kneecap. Defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson (knee), running back Michael Pittman (hamstring). and fullback Peyton Hillis (hamstring) were also held out of practice.

Defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban, who missed last season with the torn Achilles tendon, was given the day off to rest. Guard Montrae Holland continues to be held out of the morning practices as he tries to get his weight down.

Backup tight end Brett Pierce made the play of the morning with a diving catch in team drills and it was one of the more physical days of camp with a goal-line period including in the workout.

A reminder to those coming to practices in the morning -- Friday's morning practice is not open to the public because the Broncos are having an event for several hundred people who have suites at Invesco Field. Friday's afternoon practice will be special teams only and does not include the entire roster.
