Broncos chat, Oct. 21

sam_adams C'mon people now, smile on your Broncos, everybody stick to together, try to love one another right now!
photoman3825 Does that include the man who stated he had a better arm than Mr. Elway?
Mark_Wolf Trying to find the words to Eve of Destruction.
sam_adams Yeah, but John has stronger fingers!
photoman3825 hahaha True
sam_adams I believe there's a reference to 'Eve of Destruction' in the old Temptations song, 'Ball of Confusion'!
Mark_Wolf When you think Andre Hall might carry the ball for the Broncos again?
sam_adams Scout team, next practice
sam_adams Just so you all know (all two of you!), I'm in a onery mood, which means anything might come out of these keys
Mark_Wolf Eve of destruction, tax deduction, city inspectors, bill collectors, Mod clothes in demand, population out of hand, suicide, too many bills, Hippies moving to the hills. People all over the world are shouting, 'End the war.'\
me joined.
me hello all
sam_adams and the band played on!
Mark_Wolf The Broncos probably don't win in New England anyway but how devastating is this kind of loss?
sam_adams hello 'me'
danno joined.
me WTF happened last night??
me they looked horrible.
sam_adams This is the kind of game that can destroy a young team's confidence ... national TV ... beatdown ... they got punked
me they got owned
sam_adams I would guess all their hanger-ons, the people telling them how great they were after three games, probably not around right now ...
danno flying from chi to den last night, they kept announcing the score. I thought they were joking.
sam_adams Hello Danno, and welcome
Mark_Wolf You had a stat in this morning's column about the Broncos' last 16 offensive possessions, going from the second half of the Jacksonville game through halftime of last night's game: six punts, four fumbles, three interceptions, one field goal, one touchdown and a turnover on downs. So what's happened to the offense?
me book em...
joe_taulli joined.
sam_adams No joke -- and it could've been worse
yze joined.
sam_adams I've got a theory that no one really wants to hear, Mark ... in the past four games Denver has faced real good d-coordinators -- Gunther Cunningham, Monte Kiffin, Gregg Williams and last night, even though he's head coach, Bill Belichick ...
danno so, their still 4-3... What was shanny's record when he pulled Jake?
Mark_Wolf You think that explains it all?
sam_adams Problem is, Cutler hasn't been able to figure out what those guys have been doing to him -- dropping safeties back
joe_taulli sam whats up with Boss Bailey, this guy gets hurt every game
sam_adams Doesn't explain it all, but Cutler has been confused against these defenses
sam_adams Boss definitely is injury prone ... he was like that in Detroit
Mark_Wolf If everybody is dropping safeties shouldn't that open the run game?
me left.
yze am the only one that had a nasty feeling of dejavu ..wasnt it almost exactly a year ago the chargers dismantled denver here at home?
sam_adams Yeah, but Denver doesn't have the home-run threat any more -- a guy like Terrell Davis or Clinton Portis would feast ... teams are giving Denver those 5-to-7 yard runs ...
sam_adams No, it's de ja vu all over again
24champbailey joined.
Mark_Wolf The trading deadline has passed. Should the Broncos have made some kind of move?
sam_adams Danno, the Broncos were 7-4 when Shanahan went to Cutler
yze was it a case of nerves for a first start? or is lowry really has bad as he appeared. he did make some excellent blocks for the patriots tho ;)
danno time for a mgmt change?
24champbailey Hey Sam, do you think Cutler has regressed lately?
sam_adams I would have looked for a safety
sam_adams Lowry looked terrible -- maybe why the Titans gave up on him ...
sam_adams Cutler has regressed, I think ... he hasn't made snap reads to open receivers ... if that's actually football speak
yze when your defense appears to need FS,SS,MLB,OLB,DE and DT...where do you start?
joe_taulli I think the D is so bad you better find more than just a safety or 2
sam_adams Mgmt change? ... No ... I think people had better get ready -- and the Broncos should admit they're rebuilding ... they need to have a great draft of defensive players like the '06 draft was for offense
sam_adams Yeah, I hear you Joe T., but you can't trade for an entire defense!
yze honestly tho..the last few weeks i cannot blame the defense. they have kept the offense within striking distance even after 12 turn overs
joe_taulli we need a D end that can see over the guy in front of him and a middle linebacker that does more than celebrate every routine tackle he makes
sam_adams You need ... the '85 Bears!
Mark_Wolf Cutler's passes seemed to float/sail most of the night. In hindsight should he have called off the jam?
Mark_Wolf Love roller derby terms.
sam_adams Nice roller derby reference Mark ...
Mark_Wolf Sorry i stepped on that punch line, sam
sam_adams I think Cutler did the right thing ... He toughed it out ... teammates like that from the QB ... if he was badly damaged, they would've pulled him
joe_taulli no we need a defense that can keep somebody under 21
sam_adams That's all right Mark, I guess those roller girls dumped me in the trash for nothin'!
Mark_Wolf Who needs Tom Brady when you've got Sammy Morris?
sam_adams Joe, you'll love (or hate) this stat -- Denver's allowed 30 or more points in seven of their past 10 road games
joe_taulli how about the last 4 home games
sam_adams Well Tampa only got 13, and J-Ville got 24
yze what concerns me most is Cutler and his apparent 'temper tantrum' mentality..things go bad and he just seems to shutdown like a 10 year old
24champbailey Sam, do you think Bates and Shanny need to come up with a new passing attack strategy against the Cover-2 type defenses?
sam_adams Jay is a young guy ... and he's working with a young QB coach (Jeremy Bates) ... Coach Mike should step in, like Yoda, and offer more wisdom
sam_adams More crossing routes!
yze was it me or were the patriots hitting pittman like he defrauded their mothers out of a retirement money
sam_adams I'm serious, champ24 ... they've got to do something to get more big plays
sam_adams The Patriots were sending a message to Pittman -- like, we ain't scurred of your muscles!
BleedOrange joined.
sam_adams bleed orange, hello!
Evil.Fonzie joined.
24champbailey I'm thinking the same thing as well Sam, but I don't know if its the lack of a good running game or we just need to come up with a new passing attack. Do you think Ryan Torain will have an impact in the running game?
sam_adams Evil Fonzie, heeeey!
Evil.Fonzie SAM.
Mark_Wolf Evil Fonzie: screen name of the day.
sam_adams Well, we'll see on Torain ... the Broncos think he can be that back that will make teams pay for not crowding the line
yze i think really the only bright side to this season has been the play of the two young offensive tackles.
24champbailey Well realistically how much of Torain could we see against the Dolphins?
Evil.Fonzie Sam...WTF...is it the D-line or our SS? Is it the system or bad players. I can't sit by and what a retread RB run all over us.\
Mark_Wolf From Spider: Boy if looks could kill....Andre Hall would be six feet under right now. If the Broncos didn't have so many backs out with injuries I would bet that he would be waived by morning. Sam, is the Bronco defense really that bad or is it the game plan? Although the way they tackled (or didn't tackle) tonight I probably answered my own question. If the Bailey brothers are out for any extended period it will only compound their problems. You'd think that with all the disrespect the D is getting from the national media that pride alone would make them play harder.
jimmy joined.
sam_adams It's the whole unit, fonz ... from the d-coordinator to the players
Evil.Fonzie What can we do?
c0rwin007 joined.
sam_adams Champ's a great player, D.J. Williams is good, Dumervil could be good ... the rest are average, at best ... and they're not being put in position to make stops
sam_adams I say you get out of that zone, go for broke playing man ... we've already seen the worst
Evil.Fonzie I can watch many more games like that one...Last night I knocked out Potsie.
Evil.Fonzie can't
joe_taulli left.
joe_taulli joined.
sam_adams The offense looked like 11 Ralph Malphs
Evil.Fonzie LOL
jimmy left.
BleedOrange Sam, I don't understand John Lynch is still here in Denver and those safties we have couldn't start for Columbine HS... Can't we at least give hime a contract through the end of the year?
photoman3825 i think if we had 11 Ralph Malphs, they could have played better last night
Evil.Fonzie Pats are rumored to sign Lynch
c0rwin007 Sam, been a fan for 25 years, I always had thought our medicracy problem had been Brian Griese, Am I right as I start to think that its Shnahann?
c0rwin007 medioacracy
sam_adams BleedO, I saw John Lynch a few weeks ago ... the impression I got is, he wouldn't come back to Denver ... you never know, things change, but he sounded like the door to Denver is closed ... but ... you never know
c0rwin007 We couldn't stop water from flowing up hill
photoman3825 I just spoke to him a couple days ago and he said no Denver is out
photoman3825 But then again give him the right money and who knows.....
sam_adams Corwin dropping the mediocracy on us! ... The problem is awful defense, average defensive talent (at best) and a young offense that can't shake its mistakes right now ...
yze left.
Evil.Fonzie Sam...who is the most fired up in the locker room?
sam_adams Photo - I don't think its the money ... . The Broncos told him he couldn't play anymore ... that's a blow
BleedOrange What about Hamza... Watching the Broncos for so long, we need a good Safety to help stop the run and these guys are always out of position
Hupperware joined.
sam_adams Hamza went to Cleveland ... as for the fired up guy ... Nate Webster is on the field, off the field there isn't a real fiery "personality" in the locker room
Mark_Wolf When you hear Champ Bailey say, "Our attitudes stink" do you think that's just the sound of defeat on that night or an indication of a deeper problem?
leatherneck joined.
photoman3825 Sam that is true....but if they keep going like last night, something needs to be done and I would not put it past them to say WTH lets try it and go from there
Evil.Fonzie thanks Sam...gotta go. I'll take two weeks off of football now.
sam_adams I think Champ hit it on the head! ... These guys were getting run over last night
sam_adams evil, thanks for stopping by
Evil.Fonzie left.
c0rwin007 Shanahan had the same Deer in the Headlights look last night as he had last year in Detroit. He took the blame, said team wasn't prepared yada yada... Its shaping up to be the same this year...
sam_adams Thing about Lynch is, he was part of a defense that ranked 30th against the run last year
joe joined.
Mark_Wolf Lynch is gone and he ain't coming back.
sam_adams What I see from Denver the past two years is, when a team punches them dead in the mouth, they buckle and fall ...
sam_adams glass jaw
c0rwin007 Were gonna be 32nd in total D this year
joe left.
photoman3825 You know Sam when we were at Mortons that night everyone kept asking you and I who you played for maybe we can see if Shannahan has uniform for you!
BleedOrange Sam, how can this team look so good the first 3 weeks and look so bad the last couple of weeks? I think we really miss leadership like Al Wilson, Rod Smith, etc.
sam_adams They give me $500,000 I'll knock somebody on their ###*&
leatherneck With regards to the injuries. Wouldn't you say we will see a lot better team after the bye.
photoman3825 why stop at 500k!
sam_adams That might be true, BleedO, but remember we've seen Broncos teams with Al and Rod start hot, then fade
TopGun joined.
sam_adams Why stop at $500K ... let's see ... 48 years old with no prior NFL experience ... OK, let's add incentives!
c0rwin007 Bob Slowik is quickly working himself out of a job, and what about player accountability 5 turnovers, cmon
russhughes joined.
sam_adams Shanahan has got to drop the hammer on these guys ...
Mark_Wolf What do you make of Denver coming out in a 3-4?
TopGun Who could Shanahan even really get to replace Slowik
sam_adams I like it, the 3-4 ... I'd like it even more if I could see Jarvis Moss get a shot as a rush linebacker, to see if he really has some Simon Fletcher in him ... they don't have a dominant nose tackle, though
BleedOrange Do you think Shanahan is speaking and the players are not listening anymore? Sometime if all you do is yell they players stop listening.
photoman3825 They ran a 3-4 a few years back and started making tremendous plays
Hupperware You think with the fumbles by Hall, thus putting our inept D back on the field, that we we'll see Torin starting after the bye?
sam_adams I'm wondering if Shanahan actually is 'yelling' ...
eldoroh joined.
sam_adams They planned on Torain being ready for Miami ... he's got a bad arm -- I hope he can tuck the football without problems
TopGun Does Shanahan even know how to yel?
mymadori joined.
deeznutz joined.
c0rwin007 At least Ill always know that Shanny cares, especially when you see what looks to be a "Im having an aneyurism" expression after that loss.
sam_adams MIke, in my opinion, is an action guy -- you're not playing well, he shows you by replacing you with someone else -- hoping that will motivate you to play better ... some in-your-face wouldn't hurt
sam_adams I also think today's young player doesn't handle in-your-face well, and some coaches don't want to crack their little egos ... I say jump in the face!
sam_adams If Mike Ditka yelled at some of these guys, they'd pee on themselves
c0rwin007 better in the lockerroom than on the field
TopGun Cutler needs to be more of an on the field and sideline leader, would you all agree?
c0rwin007 which is what we did last night
leatherneck left.
Hupperware Do you believe Miami is the worst team we could play coming out of the bye week. Focus will be on stopping the wildcat which will not be the things the Broncos need to work on for later this year.
sam_adams Corwin, that was more of a collective ralphing!
joe_taulli left.
24champbailey left.
c0rwin007 yeah, I would use crapping myself
sam_adams That wildcat ought to give Denver plenty to practice for ... if they're not prepared for Nov. 2, we'll see it right away
deeznutz Here's a thought...I found it extremely pathetic that when the Broncos D mustered a sack that they couldn't even knock down Matt Cassel. They would just drape him and the refs would blow the whistle. That happened maybe four times last night
deeznutz Talk about super soft
sam_adams The Broncos have been beaten by Matt Cassel and Damon Huard ... off with their heads!
Mark_Wolf Brandon Marshall is still catching the ball and running backwards to try to free himself for a big play. Thought he said last week he was going to run north and south.
kb630 joined.
sam_adams I think Brandon's going to keep doing what made us all start proclaiming him to be one of the best in the league ... as long as he holds onto the football, he'll be fine
ifixjets798 joined.
sam_adams kb630, hello!
ifixjets798 hello
sam_adams '798, thanks for coming in!
TopGun Do you think Shanny is going to try and get a top notch D cordinator during the offseason?
sam_adams There might be some name guys out there -- ahem, Wade Phillips, Marvin Lewis ... these are guys that aren't great head coaches, but they're top-notch defensive coordinators ... get them what they need to be successful
mymadori And what do you think will happen to Andre Hall as a result of last night's butterfinger display?
sam_adams Someone told me they saw Hall walking the Massachusetts Turnpike
mymadori LOL
mymadori nice
BleedOrange left.
BroncoRick69 joined.
sam_adams Hey, the guy couldn't hold the ball on handoffs, but he didn't fumble any kickoffs so that's probably where he'll stay -- unless they get real angry and let him go
mymadori That's the thing about being a female fan...I was so angry- but my heart just ached for the guy
TopGun Hall should be lucky to touch the ball again.
Mark_Wolf And he dropped his toll booth change.
mymadori I was surprised to see him on the kickoff immediately following the second fumble
sam_adams Ba-doomp ching!
mymadori held my breath the whole time
ifixjets798 Hall wasnt the reason Denver lost
sam_adams He's a tough kid with a big heart ... just couldn't hold the ball -- although the second fumble would've happened to most backs
ifixjets798 he made 2 mistakes but the D made new England liik like a top notch team
sam_adams 798, you're on to something -- two fumbles, and the Broncos D, gulp, held to two field goals
BroncoRick69 The D wasnt that bad.
ifixjets798 What wasnt that bad
hollyhh2000 joined.
photoman3825 He has not fumbled any kickoffs but I think his time is coming. After last nights display I think his time is limited and I dont think they will keep him at just kickoffs. Maybe a sub if someone else get hurts but I think they would be crazy to even count on him for kickoffs
BroncoRick69 6 sacks, but no tackling lol
ifixjets798 Jeez they ran on us like the pony express
mymadori agreed. I felt like they were coming up pretty big (the D that is)....until they got far enough behind that well, it just unnerved them
sam_adams It was 6-0 ... still plenty of time
deeznutz left.
ifixjets798 and they converted almost every 3rd down
BroncoRick69 I think the whole team just went in the tank at some point.
TopGun Both sides of the ball have been pretty bad of late.
sam_adams When the penalties started coming for stupid things (personal fouls), you knew the Patriots were in Denver's heads
mymadori I just keep revisiting Shanny's "We WON'T miss the playoffs" during his interview on the fan
ifixjets798 they lack passion and heart
TopGun Last night was a complete melt-down!
ifixjets798 did you se them on the side lines
mymadori yeah those penalties were nuts
sam_adams They lack passion, heart and an ability to overcome adversity ...
photoman3825 He better change a lot of staff if he "Wont miss the playoffs"
mymadori sack the guy in the end zone...by his face mask. Nice.
ifixjets798 thats true you have to over come turn overs and penalties
ifixjets798 control the situation and not let it control you
photoman3825 nicely said 798
sam_adams They're gonna have to spend the bye week with Dr. Phil
mymadori ha ha ha ha
kb630 left.
ifixjets798 I am a die hard bronco fan and wanted to see a win last night like everyone
ifixjets798 it was the last game Ill see here in the US
BroncoRick69 I heard someone saying that Mike Nolan was a great defensive coordinator,
ifixjets798 maybee next year
ifixjets798 there are a lot of coaches on the hot seat
sam_adams Thing is, the Broncos, after this embarrassing whipping ... are 4-3 and guaranteed to be in first place when they come back on Nov. 2 ...
sam_adams Question is, do they want to stay there?
ifixjets798 Romeo Cornell is a great Defensive Coord as well
TopGun Not to knock on Cutler too much, but it seams as though he lost his competitiveness last night. Didn't seem to have much urgency when they were down early.
ifixjets798 Question is how do they stay there
ifixjets798 playing like they have over the last 3 games
sam_adams Top, that might be true ... but how bad was this guy's finger hurting?
BroncoRick69 Jay Cutler seems to get a little pissy when things dont go his way.
BroncoRick69 He lets that affect his game.
sam_adams They stay there by making plays and winning games ... 10 wins will get this division
ifixjets798 dad enough to throw 2 interceptions and a lot of flat balls
ifixjets798 bad*
ifixjets798 10 wins is a lot to ask for with the defense giving up at least 150 yds a game
russhughes left.
ifixjets798 on the ground
sam_adams I wouldn't have lost any respect for Cutler if he had not come back in the second half ... he came back out for more pounding
BroncoRick69 Its also alot to ask when the offense has 4 turnovers a game.
ifixjets798 true you put those big guys out on the field and they get tired
sam_adams That's true, but you gotta hope they stop putting the ball on the ground -- and make a few tackles somewhere down the line
c0rwin007 Ive been a Shanahan Supporter for years, But Pat Bowlen Said there would not be another Loss Like this one last year, well now that there has been and in front of the whole world..... Pat might recommend Shanny retire to his new Mansion
sam_adams We've been at it for 57 minutes, and no one has mentioned that Denver's offense has put up 24 points and the team has gone 0-2 without Tony Scheffler
ifixjets798 well 24 points would have solved last night problem
TopGun I personally thought it was more than his finger last night that was really effecting him. I think he needs to develop more on his small game. Seems to be looking to marshall far too often.
ifixjets798 we needed 42 points
BroncoRick69 Missing scheffler and Stokely has hurt.
ifixjets798 Stokley is a lot of 3rd down offense
ifixjets798 he always maks the clutch catch
ifixjets798 and runs good routes
TopGun Stokley is the man in short situations.
BroncoRick69 always
ifixjets798 Cutler is looking to Brandon too often and in tight situations and still throws the ball
photoman3825 Sam - have to run busy on the 7th floor. Will talk to you later but this was fun and lots of people had great comments
sam_adams I'll leave you all with this Springer-like ending ... this is the time when the hangers-on leave you alone with the mirror ... the Broncos had better take a long look to figure out what they are -- and what they want to be
TopGun It's becoming way too predictable. If I were shanny, I would bench Marshall for a game to force Cutler to work with the other receivers. Sounds crazy, but it might work...
sam_adams Thanks everybody, for the chat, the opinions ... I gotta run! ... Check out the Open Mic blog when you can and make your thoughts known
photoman3825 left.
sam_adams Bye!
ifixjets798 Thanx Sam
eldoroh left.
ifixjets798 left.
Mark_Wolf If you want to wash the bad Broncos taste out of your mouth this weekend and watch teams who hit hard and play like they love the game, look for the Friday Night Lights. We recommend No. 3 Mullen at No. 1 Grandview and No. 2 Columbine at No. 7 Pomona, both to decide league championships.
