Congrats Mr. Pat, you just fired a hell of a good coach. Hopefully Mike will get the head coaching job in Detroit and give them a super bowl next year. You may have a lot of money but you sure do not have a lot of brains

I have been a bronco fan forever and a Shanahan fan since Mike first came to the broncos. he is a great coach and along with Elway, TD, Sharpe and lets not forget Bowlen brought 2 super bowls to the mile high city, however that was 10 years ago think about it fans i mean honestly think about what have the broncos done in the last 10 years. i really struggled with this, but after thinking long and hard i truly think its best all the way around for Mike and the broncos. Mike can pretty much write is own coaching ticket and where ever he goes he will be successful and have a rekindled passion. now Bowlen can go out and get new coach who has that same passion to take the broncos to the next level. the only thing that scares me if Pat starts messing with the offense leave them alone for the most part. defense and special teams we need help. but what really gets me is the way some of our defensive players just lay down and gave up,they gave up on there teammates, there coaches and the fans. those players truly disgust me and those same players should never ever be allowed to wear a broncos uniform again. comm,on bronco fans lets support the team we will get through this.i will also continue to support Mike unless he is coaching in the AFC west than all bets are off.

Shanahan was a .500 coach post John Elway. Without Elway, the Broncos played exactly 4 playoff games, 3 of which they lost. The reason is simple - while Shanahan the coach may be among the elite, Shanahan the personnel man is near the bottom of the pack. The Broncos are 8-8 every year because they do not have enough talent to be an elite team.

Shanahan the personnel man should have been fired a long time ago and unfortunately, Shanahan the .500 coach was inextricably linked to Shanahan the personnel man.

If Pat Bowlen is smart, he will hire a proven first rate personnel man along the lines of Bob Ferguson, who gathered much of the talent that propelled Buffalo to four Super Bowls and also gathered much of the talent that later propelled the Broncos with Shanahan as coach to two Super Bowls. Let the GM pick and manage a coach.

it sucks but it's the right move. a move that took serious go-nads. keep bates, get a guy like rex ryan, and load up on defense through the draft with a guy like mays from USC, and see what's available in free agency. we'll be fine. good luck mike!

I think Bowlen was left with no choice. I have followed the Broncos since the teams origin. I too, always felt Shanahan was a top coach, but, this team is eleven players short of being a contending team. The entire defense needs to be re-tooled and apparently Shanahan's choices since January '05 have left us with what we saw against the Chargers. Bowlen wants to win---more so than a lot of loyal Bronco fans, it seems.

Finally he fired Shanahan. Maybe now I can watch the Broncos again. What Denver coach as allow so many blow out not to mention his home record since being with the Broncos has be ungly. Worst home loses in Denver history. No Defence no special teams these has been Shanahan trade mark since being in Denver. Not to mention Denver should have scored a whole lot more points with the talent that has been here. Dominate on the field by stats but never on the scoreboard. Shanahan team couldn't keep a lead to save their life. Yea he one two super bowls but not with his teams he put together don't forget atleast 80% of the team was in place before Shanahan arrived. When that team retired Shanahan was a sub par coach with the team he put together thru out the rest of his sub par career in Denver. They kept firing all the other coaches instead of firing the real problem THE HEAD COACH. Since Shanahan been here no turn over and no Mile High Majic. Just look at his home record including the amount of playoff loses at home. Look back at the amount of blow outs at home and in playoffs. As well as sub par teams Denver has lost thru though out the years. Remember this year losing record team we lost to including the worst team in the league Blow out in KC, Blow out at home to The raiders blow out to SD 8-8. No in this Division deserved a playoff spot at 8-8 get real.

Shanahan leaving is the right move. He is responsible for the horrid defence and the horrid defencive coordinator. I am so tired of seeing the back of Dre Bly's jersey as he gets beat like a rented mule play after play. I am so tired of seeing the d backs playing 10 yards off the line not even attempting to make contact or disrupt the timing rout of the reciever. I'm tired of sloppy fundamentals that I learned in pop warner. And Last, I'm tired of seeing the faces of the offence on the side lines as they watch the defence give up first down after first down and score after score.
Mike is an icon and will be giving us fits on game day some where down the line just as he has done to other teams through out his career. I wish him all the best. I look forward to seeing the team I love to watch once again rise to the top of their game and bring pride back to the city, fans and players alike. Goodluck Mike and thank you for everything you've done for this team. Waremest wishes to you and your family. Thanks Mr Bowlen for making a tough decision that needed to be made. Sometimes the hardest part of being a friend is reminding someone that you also have a responsibility as the boss. Go Broncos!!

Broncos fans - don't expect too much from this organization. The owner does not strike me as very subtle or astute. By contrast, look at the Patriots front office and coaching and it becomes clear the the Broncos are second tier and will remain so. I think that it comes down to personnel decisions and personnel management. Neither Shannahan nor Bowlen have much skill at evaluating players beyond their sheer athletic ability. They seem to be oblivious to the intangibles that make up the character of the players. And the absence of those intangibles is what makes the Broncos players fade at the end of the season when other teams bear down. (Granted, there are exceptions - Champ Bailey, for one, is a GREAT player.) To me, Shannahan's lack of ability in this regard explains the failures over the last several years.

Also, it doesn't appear to me that Shannahan has much ability to foster the intangibles in his players. From what I see on TV, Cutler has turned out to be an arrogant ass, and Shannahan did not seem to be able to steer him in a better direction, much less control him.

Bowlen will get a chance to show how obtuse he is when he picks his next head coach. If he picks Elway (and I don't know if that is even in the range of possibilities since I don't follow this stuff that closely) you will see just what kind of character guy Elway is - and I predict that it will not be a pretty sight. On the other hand, Bowlen might get lucky and accidentally make a good choice, but I don't think that is very likely.

One final observation on the character judgment of these two men. Both were publicly strong Bush supporters. Enough said.

O and I have met Jay Cutler and been around him quite abit and he is far from an arrogant ass he is the future of the franchise and a great guy.

    GOD BLESS MIKE, and JOHN

I will remember Coach Shanahan with some fondness because he was the final ingredient in our Superbowl eforts in the last millenia. However, GM/VP Shanahan will forever be recalled as the inept, micro-managing martinet which squandered years of drafts, loads of contract cash and a declining organizational commitment to work and win as a team. I'm sure Coach Mike will find success elsewhere...how can he not? Denver needed a change because the team has become like pigs overly content to wallow in their sty.

I voted Gore in 2000 and Bush in 2004 and Baldwin in 2008, what does that say about my character you imbecile? John Elway supported McCain and I didn't equate that to anything other than he is a sheep following Republican as you are a sheep following Democrat. Not everything is so narrowly black and white as your mind makes it. I live my life happily in a gray area most of America pretends isn't there or doesn't matter.

just found your blog. Bronco Dean sure looks silly doesn't he. It's one thing to love your team and make brash predictions. But when they don't come true then you give credit where credit is due, admit the problems and then try to fix 'em. Rant all you want. It doesn't solve a thing. And when a team beats you silly after you predicted that the broncos would slaughter them, tip your hat to them. That's what a real man does. Football is for real men, not whiners like Dean.

Your team made the right move firing the coach. I can tell you that because we used to fear you and now we don't. Get somebody who can make some tough personnel decisions, make the players stay on message at all times and keep the backup players engaged so they know the system when injuries force them into the line up and you will do fine. It is a team sport. Your best player has to understand that and set the example for all the rest instead of soaking up all the glory. Otherwise, football is just a big source of frustration when nothing gells long enough to make a run at a SB.

Elway? Maybe. But it is rare for a great player to also be a great coach. Is this a real possibility or just a wish? I thought he was more interested in selling cars.

It is time for this change and one area where I expect to see improvement is the Defense! Josh McDaniels is a welcome change for an already talented and young team. I have no doubt we will be thorougly entertained next year while taking back the AFC West Division Championship for starters. GO BRONCOS!
