It's our secret

If there's one thing that should have been learned in three Colorado recruiting cycles under Dan Hawkins, it's this: He plays it close to the vest and wants some of his prospects to do the same.

Here's why:

When Hawkins was at Boise State, he discovered that if the names of some of his recruits were publicized, he wound up fighting some Pac-10 schools to keep them. Seems some of the Pac-10 boys let Boise/Hawkins do the leg work, then entered the fray late and tried to cherry pick.

So Hawkins, as he explained to scribes early on at CU, isn't too keen on the names of some of his diamonds-in-the-rough hitting the Internet, the air waves or the sports pages.

Can you blame him?

For that reason, you're probably right in thinking that CU's current commitment number -- 18 at this writing -- might be one, two or three higher.

We'll see next Wednesday.
