The back nine

Wednesday, March 26 at 11:30 PM

was a night of hard truths for Chickezie Eze, the latest American Idol hopeful to be sent packing.
Was it his inconsistent delivery in recent weeks? His inability to find a defining style? The lack of a breakout performance?
Whatever the reason, the former TSA airport screener was on the losing end of the 30 million votes cast Tuesday en route to the May 21 crowning of a new American Idol.
The ever gracious Chikezie departed with a performance of Luther Vandross' If Only for One Night that was self-assured and polished.
Fans haven't seen the last of Chikezie. He'll be on the American Idol Top 10 Tour this summer.
Personally, I was surprised. I was sure Ramiele Malubay was going to be cut. Just goes to show you can't be certain about the fickle tastes of the viewing public.
Wednesday's elimination show followed the usual formula, with host Ryan Seacrest trying to manufacture suspense as he announced the bottom three vote getters between revelations of who was "safe" for another week.
Joining Eze in the bottom tier was Syesha Mercado.
The show included plenty of filler, including a Ford commercial with Idol contestants singing Cheap Trick's I Want You to Want Me and a fairly interesting look at the difference between the full-length Idol songs consumers can download on iTunes, and the truncated versions they sing on the show.
There were also viewer questions taken live, including a query asking judge Simon Cowell if he thought he was the best looking person in the theater. Weird.
This week's Idol alumni performance was Kimberley Locke, a top 3 finisher during season two. She sang her latest single, Fall.
And so it continues next Tuesday. No word on what the musical theme will be, although personally I'm hoping for "Songs from the Crimean War."
