Nine players at Avalanche practice today

The Avalanche had an optional practice today and only nine players took part. Not a big deal, I guess, because they'll have a full practice Saturday and don't play until Sunday vs. San Jose.

Goalies Peter Budaj and Andrew Raycroft practiced, along with defensemen Jordan Leopold and Daniel Tjarnqvist, and forwards Ben Guite, David Jones, Cody McCormick, Cody McLeod and Wojtek Wolski.

Coach Tony Granato wasn't on the ice -- the assistants were -- and he wasn't available after the workout.

Budaj stays in net

Peter Budaj will be in goal for the Avalanche on Saturday against the Sabres, seeking his third win in a row. He stopped 51 of 55 shots in his past two starts to lower his goals-against average to 3.42 and raise his save percentage to .868.

"He looks like Peter again," coach Tony Granato said today. "He looks like the Peter we thought we were going to see. (Thursday) night he had to make some big saves for us. It looks like he's back in his rhythm."

Also, right wing David Jones practiced today and said he feels up to playing Saturday after missing Thursday's game because of an illness. He played Monday in Los Angeles and got sick after arriving home.
