Broncos grab a DT
With their second pick of the fifth round -- 148th overall -- the Broncos selected Virginia Tech defensive tackle Carlton Powell.
Powell is a player scouts believed didn't quite test as well as he played. But at 6-2, 292 pounds he finished this past season with 39 tackles, seven tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. He ran a 5.12 (electronically timed) 40 at the combine, which was among the fastest of the defensive tackles timed in Indianapolis.
With Marcus Thomas and Dewayne Robertson already slated to start inside, Powell would be competing for a spot in the rotation.
But the Broncos have been in search for more depth in the middle of the defensive line for much of the offseason. Powell was a durable player in college having missed just one game -- back in '05.
