CSU to hold 'thud' scrimmage

Colorado State coach Steve Fairchild hopes to clean up things Saturday when the Rams hold a scrimmage at Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium.

The scrimmage is closed to the media and public.

The Rams, trying to bounce back under new coach Fairchild after two conseutive losing seasons, open the 2008 season Aug. 31 in the Rocky Mountain Showdown game against rival Colorado at Invesco Field at Mile High.

"We're not ready," Fairchild said. "We're coming to come back out here Saturday and although we won't tackle, we'll thud it. We'll get 60-plus plays Saturday and try to clean things up."

A 'thud' practice is where defenders wrap up ball carriers but don't tackle them and one area the Rams will be trying to polish is the passing game.

Fifth-year senior Billy Farris will get his first collegiate start at quarterback against the Buffs and he'll be throwing to a group of new receivers.

"We've got to get more consistent at quarterback and receiver," Fairchild said. "We're not limping along, but our passing game is not progressing quite like we'd like. We'll just keep repping them."
