Immigration meeting in Greeley
Re: Hundreds pack Greeley gathering on illegal immigration and crime.
Weld County DA Ken Buck held his anti-immigrant event as “informational", although its entire focus came from statistically questionable conclusions. The public was misled twice over. First off, study after study shows that immigrants are significantly less likely than the native born to commit crimes. Even Buck himself had to admit that the undocumented compose a vast minority of those committing crimes in Weld County. Nevertheless, a few highly painful, but also numerically rare, testimonies from victims served to place blame where it is not warranted- on immigrants. Second, in his “informational”
This forum should be applauded for its efforts to combat the fear and hate that Buck’s events espoused by focusing on welcoming immigrants, doing away with damaging stereotypes and strengthening neighborly relationships.

"Immigrants are significantly less likely than native born to commit crimes." Okay, I'll buy that...what about the ILLEGAL immigrants who are committing a crime by being here? They have already committed a crime. They are committing crimes when they falsely use social security numbers and drive without insurance. These crimes do hurt people. And the simple fact that the ILLEGAL immigrants are here is a crime against the people who are trying to legally enter this country. I'm all for immigrant rights, I am against rights for ILLEGAL immigrants!

Posted by Jimminy on September 29, 2007 02:32 PMNotice how the author never once uses the word "illegal" in her diatribe? Notice how these open borders people like to confuse the difference between LEGAL immigration and ILLEGAL immigration like there was no difference at all? Whenever you see the word "undocumented" you know you have an open borders supporter who cares more about law breakers and what is good for them rather than what is good for America and the American people - those who were born here and those who went through the arduous process of entering this country legally.
Posted by Michael on September 29, 2007 02:47 PMEVERY crime committed by an illegal alien is a crime that should never have happened. It is a red herring to say that fewer crimes are committed by illegals (and Chandra cannot bring herself to say that word). Had they stayed in their own countries, they would not have been here preying upon innocent Americans and LEGAL immigrants.
Chandra's organization should be called "Coloradans for Invaders' Rights".

A Big Hurricane Dean with the strength of 150 miles hour hits Mexico.
Two million Mexicans have died and over a million are injured. The
country is totally ruined and the government doesn't know where to start
and is asking for help to rebuild. The rest of the world is in shock.
Canada is sending troopers to help the Mexican army control the riots.
Saudi Arabia is sending oil.
Other Latin American countries are s ending supplies.
The European community (except France) is sending food and money.
The United States, not to be outdone, is sending two million Mexicans
to replace the dead ones.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called a plan to build fencing along parts of the Mexico border a "terrible idea" that overlooks local communities.
Pelosi made the comments during her trip to the Rio Grande Valley for the annual Hispanic Engineering, Science & Technology Week conference at the University of Texas-Pan American.
"I have been against the fence, I thought it's a bad idea even when it was just a matter of discussion," said Pelosi, D-Calif. "These are communities where you have a border going through them, they are not communities where you have a fence splitting them."
Last year, President Bush signed the Secure Fence Act requiring the construction of fencing along the 2,000-mile border. The plans call for about 370 miles of fence and 200 miles of vehicle barriers, including concrete barriers, by the end of 2008.
Pelosi also touted legislation known as the DREAM Act that would make it easier for some illegal immigrants to receive higher education benefits. She spoke at a conference that drew more than 5,000 students for activities designed to inspire careers in science and technology.
The DREAM Act would eliminate a federal provision that discourages states from providing illegal immigrants with lower in-state tuition rates. It also would allow permanent residency for illegal immigrants who entered the country as children and have been admitted to an institution of higher education.
"It just isn't fair," Pelosi said. "Those young people who came to America one way or another ... their opportunities are curtailed because of the situation. And it's not only harmful to them -- it's harmful to the country."
Posted by on September 29, 2007 03:31 PMPUERTO PENASCO, Mexico — Mexican President Felipe Calderon told U.S. governors Thursday that immigration is an inevitable, natural phenomenon and he urged the U.S. Congress to approve reforms that would allow more Mexicans to work legally north of the border.
Calderon demanded that the United States respect "the right to work wherever one can make the greatest contribution."
"Immigration is a natural phenomenon that is economically and socially inevitable," he told the meeting in this Sonora seaside resort town.
In a rare acknowledgment of the costs of migration for Mexico, Calderon said his country "doesn't not celebrate migration ... our best people are the ones who go."
Immigration and border security were among the top issues at the meeting, the 25th annual such event between Mexican and U.S. governors from states along the two countries' common border. Mexican officials were focused on stopping the illegal flow of U.S. weapons into Mexico and protesting expansion of U.S. border fencing. For the Americans, the drug trade, migration and border security topped the list.
Posted by on September 29, 2007 03:47 PMGreeley has been over-run by illegals! They are ruining what was once a nice town.
It's people like YOU Ms. Russo that are enabling illegals in their quest to overtake this country with their sheer numbers.
Illegals refuse to assimilate. Use up all of the social services meant for our poor.
Demand rights when they have none. Commit murder of our citizens. Maim or kill our citizens with their un-insured cars. Trash our neighborhoods. Expose us to antibiotic resistant tuberculosis and other third world diseases. Overcrowd our schools and stifle our childrens education by dumbing down the schools to teach illegals children first and foremost. Steal our very identities. Drive down wages, and take away jobs that Americans have done for years!. And that's just for starters!!!
There is NOTHING to like about being invaded by ONE ethnic group Ms. Russo.
NO country in this world can absorb 12-20-40 million people of one ethnicity and the untold millions they will bring with them, and have it's sovereignty left intact!!
If you don't see this Ms. Russo you are ignoring the elephant in the room!!! When the elephant soils and you are knee deep don't say you weren't warned!!!
Get your blinders off and understand that the illegals are devastating this country.
What the hell is the matter with you???
Why does your loyalty lie with Mexico??
Are you a spokesperson for La Raza or another PRO-illegal group????
What a Shame!!!! But, then ignorance is bliss!
Posted by Tears for America on September 29, 2007 03:47 PMOk lets learn a new word.
I-L-L-E-G-A-L
There is a difference between LEGAL and ILLEGAL immgrants. They are NOT the same.
You can say "no person is illegal" but what the hell does that really mean?
Try this experiment sometime:
PIck any secured public area and just ignore the guards and walk right through the metal detector. In about 10 seconds you will understand the full meaning of illegal.
What about sort-of-pregnant or flesh peddling? Criminal illegal Mexicans have made American taxpayers prostitutes, for their financial gain and the financial gain of the Mexican gov't, Vatican, Wal-Mart, banking industry (mortgage liar loans, credit cards, US Chamber of Commerce membership, etc.), ag and construction industries, etc. I'm tired of being a nappy-headed HO.
Posted by draftdodgingisntafamilyvalue on September 29, 2007 07:00 PMThe Greeley immigration meeting was a "crock". We are Americans, within a nation of laws, unfortunately, governed by a corps of bipartisan draft-dodging cowards (Bush, Cheney, Reid, Boehner, McConnell, etc.). (R)SAG John Suthers (draft-dodger/loser), started this type of gut-less fiasco in Colorado, when he went to Saudia Arabia, to explain to the Royal Family, why we jailed a Saudi rapist and kidnapper.
I proudly join US Rep. Murtha (USMC Vietnam War hero), "I wouldn't serve in today's armed forces with these guys and their draft deferments".
Posted by draftdodgingisntafamilyvalue on September 29, 2007 07:18 PMThey were going to hold the meeting in a bigger place, but they could not find enough Mexicans to clean it.
Posted by on September 29, 2007 07:23 PMHmm--Coloradans for Immigrant Rights.
Chandra, shouldn't that be Coloradans for ILLEGAL Immigrant Rights because that's who you are fighting for.
Immigrants don't need an organization to fight for them. When they are LEGAL they have the same rights as any other citizen.
NO ONE is anti immigrant. Everyone who is sick and tired of their tax dollars going to support lawbreakers is anti-ILLEGAL immigrant. They are lawbreakers as soon as they sneak over the border. The crimes that ILLEGALS have committed should not have happened at all and I don't give a damn that you say those are "numerically rare". DO YOU GET IT? THEY SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED.
Where do you think you have a right to defend people who laugh at our immigratioln laws?
Because I want to buy something but don't have the money doesn't mean I have the right to rob a bank, GET IT, MS. RUSSO? That's exactly what every ILLEGAL is doing to this country, ROBBING THE BANK, with people like you assisting them.
You are not going to get any sympathy from American citizens who are fed up to their ears with this mess. Go to the Catholic Church or LaRaza if you want sympathy. WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH.
EVERY blog on this page has not said a THING that I would not agree with. As a citizen, if you are, you should be ashamed of yourself!
Posted by c on September 29, 2007 07:24 PMOh, and by the way Ms. Russo, the organizers of that event in Greeley were simply looking out for their citizens. WE NEED MORE OF THEM TO STAND UP FOR THE RIGHTS OF AMERICAN LEGAL CITIZENS, NOT MORE OF YOU WHO DON'T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT US!
Posted by c on September 29, 2007 07:28 PMI'd bet Chandra is one of those big homely American girls ignored by indigenous guys and targeted by illegals looking for citizenship via marriage. She no doubt fell for the first greasy mexican that paid her any attention , got knocked up and married, and now is just another useful idiot shilling for criminal mexicans.
STOP FAT GIRLS FROM MARRYING ILLEGALS
08:11Pm, I wouldn't sign a name to such filth either. That's not even gutter humor.
Posted by on September 29, 2007 08:26 PMRusso being a part of coloradan's for immigrant rights then she should be concerned that we have MILLIONS OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS here that are competing more direclty for jobs that immigrants want/need making it harder on immigrants to make a living; immigrants do follow the laws because if they don't they risk deportation unlike the ILLEGAL immigrants; Mexico has its own immigration law that the U.S. should consider those details are easy to find with a quick search

It wasn't meant to be humorous. You must be one of the hard-up disgusting slobs I was referring to, and it appears I hit a nerve.Does the truth hurt?
STOP FAT GIRLS FROM MARRYING ILLEGALS
I suppose Chandra wouldn't protest if someone walked out of her house with the contents of her purse. Since no one knows who did it how can it be a crime? What would she say if the local stores announced they would prosecute all shoplifters except those without identification? That is how the police treat illegal aliens stopped for traffic offenses. Traffic offenses are not major crimes so they issue a ticket and ignore the criminal's other, more serious, crime of illegally entering the United States. Small wonder that the number of crimes is low when so few are even recorded as such until someone dies or is badly injured.
We can't know how many crimes are committed by illegal aliens, yes, they are illegally here so they are ILLEGAL ALIENS. Unless we catch someone and convict them we don't know who committed a crime. Statistics are available to show that a majority of those who have no legal driver's license, no insurance and no legal registration are illegal immigrants. If they are working they have either stolen someone's Social Security Number or are getting paid under the table. Both are crimes we don't see on many police blotters.
One thing we can measure is the number of people who tried to obtain driver's licenses with invalid documents when the laws were changed to make it harder to use forged documents. There were over 2000 applications rejected in Denver, in the first month the regulations were imposed, that were not "repaired." If we make a generous assumption that half of these were people who didn't really want a license, that leaves a thousand people a month trying to get a license with deliberately forged papers. At least 12,000 a month were getting licenses before the requirements were revised. That was just in Denver. Greeley is smaller. Make it 5000 a year. That is a flood of people who place a tremendous demand on social services, education and law enforcement. Many of them also apply for welfare benefits that they are not legally entitled to. Assume that only 10 percent of of those whose Welfare paperwork includes false papers are illegal aliens. How many taxpayer dollars are
End result is that we need to deal with all illegal immigrants in such a way that they will make the decision to leave. The reality of the theft of jobs, life quality and human lives is regularly denied. Just as saying something doesn't make it so, saying something isn't happening doesn't make it not so.
Perhaps the best answer is to leave people alone and make certain that any business employing illegals is punished by both heavy fines and loss of business license. Businesses make a financial decision to hire illegals. Make that decision a no-brainer and there will be fewer crimes committed by illegals. The illegals will leave on their own.
Posted by momma y on September 29, 2007 09:09 PMExpect to see more of these 'town hall' type meetings and campaign commercials as we run up to the 2008 election. America has a long and unflattering history of pitting white citizens against those of other colors (red, black, yellow, and now brown) for political gain of one party over the other.
The typical pattern is to use a legitimate issue as a vehicle to channel the latent economic anxiety of low-mid-income whites to rally against the racial 'other' and away from scrutinizing the underlying political and economic system that is the root cause of their condition.
In this case, the issue is 'illegal immigration' and while it is a significant problem in its own right, the real political traction is gained by fanning the flames over the rapid growth in America of non-white -legal- citizens. -That- is the emotional lever conservative politicians need to pull to mobilize a disaffected base to the polls, given the wholesale failure of the core ideology in recent years.
Today's common rationalization that one's passionate concern about this issue is strictly limited to "illegal" immigrants joins a long line of rationalizations used throughout American history to put a legitimate sounding gloss to one's susceptibility to such manipulation.
Unfortunately it is not a matter of if, but when, we see 2008 Republican candidates release a Latino remake of the 1988 Willie Horton classic. And for some Americans it will work like a charm, as it always has.

Colorado construction workers can't buy a (living wage) job down here. Keep it up , Bush will be gone someday and will get our country back.

Illegal immigration
It worries me that people in this part of the country think that an illegal or undocumented immigrant has rights to be in this great country of ours.
They are not able to tell the difference between an immigrant who was inspected and admitted and one who entered illegally.
An illegal alien is just what is means, AN ILLEGAL ALIEN, a person who has not been inspected and admitted legally and is therefore deportable. There are hundreds of thousands of immigrants waiting their turn to enter this country legally and they are waiting in their country.
Why should we go out of our way to accommodate one who was not legally admitted?
Any person who assists an illegal alien to evade removal or deportation should be held accountable for his/her actions and brought before a court of law.
Teofilo Lara
Northeast El Paso
Stop with the red hering. The study was about LEGAL immigrants NOT ILLEGAL aliens. Legal immigrants are the least likely to commit a crime and illegal aliens the most...so mix them and it looks diffierent. Illegal aliens have no respect for the laws of this country.
Be honest Ms Russo, If the majority of illegal aliens were Chinese, you would want them deported. BUT you are a racist, and think you are better.
Americans should guard the border on their own and shoot the invaders as they enter. Just because it is a Federal responsibility, as delegated by the citizens, it does not mean that the citizens have given up the right to enforce the law on their own.
Posted by on September 30, 2007 08:57 AMYes it is so true that Legal aliens are less likely to commite crimes. What a concept that a law abiding person would not commite crime. Common sense there. I bet statistics back this up as well.
Law abiding citizens more then likely make up less then 1% of people in jail. Could this be because they are LAW ABIDING?
So moving on to illegal. Part of the problem with the school system. When people are not taught the definition of illegal. It means against the law. So when a person breaks the law they become a criminal. Is my train of thought here not correct? So if you enter this country illegally it means you have broken the law. When you are hired under false documentation it is another law you have broken. Useing someone elses identity is another crime. So far we have what three strikes now? Isnt there something about three strikes and your out? Do we not send criminals who are three strikers away for 25 years or longer?
According to national geographic the federal prisons have over 70% population of non citizens (in other words illegals who snuck into this country).
It boils down to common sense. They are in jail for commiting crimes against citizens. Crimes that never would have taken place if they were not here.
But then again common sense does not take place in this country any more. No one is responsible for thier actions and its always someone elses fault.

You are what I call a Flipper. Flippers "flip" the issue of illegal immigration over to one of racism.
Your post is a joke. We have NOTHING against immigration no matter what the ethnic group. It is ILLEGALS who sneak here and suck us dry year after year after year (decades and decades in alot of cases)without consequence who we have an objection to. We are tired and getting angrier by the day.
The WORD is ILLEGAL and the CONCERN is with ILLEGALS. Shake the dust from your brain, 9:28!
Posted by c on September 30, 2007 11:57 AMThe OP is trying to obfuscate the point by saying that legal immigrants commit very few crime and tries to intimate that this equates to the illegal aliens.
Perhaps legal immigrants commit only 1% crimes based on their population....
Illegal Aliens, based on their population are 100% criminals. Every single one of them. They have committed a crime just by being here.
At every one of these town meetings, they need to Immigration officials there with buses for quick transport to detention centers. But we need these all over town.
Posted by Dravur on October 1, 2007 07:56 AMIllegal,
First law broken, entering the USA illegally,
Second law broken, obtaining stolen or fake ID to obtain a job or service
Third law broken, driving without a valid license or insurance,
Fourth law broken, obtiain credit based on fake ID.
How many laws need to be broken before we understand that Illegal Aliens are breaking federal state and local laws by entering and living here. It is time to take back the United States of America from those that would rape it for their own gain. ILLEGAL means ILLEGAL no matter what race or ethinc background.
