CSU’s editorial

Leon Rodriguez of Denver writes:

Re; Article from Rocky Mountain News, Saturday, 9/22/07; CSU paper draws heat for editorials.
It is apparent that free speech here in The USA is the next censure we Americans will face under the Bush/Cheney regime.
Shouldn’t we speak out to prevent Buch/Cheney from initiating a nuclear attack on Iran?
Shouldn’t we speak out for the 3,790 US Troops that have been killed in the Bush/Cheney war in Iraq for oil and money?
Shouldn’t we speak out to against the Bush/Cheney State Department for using the Black Water mercenaries to kill innocent Iraqis?
Shouldn’t we speak out for the 650,000 plus innocent Iraqi civilians that have been killed in the Bush/Cheney Iraq war?
Shouldn’t we speak out against Haliburton and the criminal behavior of the Bush/Cheney awarding no bid contracts for their war in Iraq?
Shouldn’t we speak out against the Bush/Cheney crimes of illegal spying, torture, signing statements that arrogate legislative powers to the executive branch, schemes to punish political foes and refusal to cooperate with congressional inquires?
We cannot allow our speech to be silenced by these greed driven war mongers.
I do fully agree with the young scholars of CSU; F———— Bush!!

How do you enjoy your little hate-filled world, Leon?

Shouldn't we be able to speak intelligently about our grievances with our Government without resorting to swearing?

Shouldn't we expect that a higher education's newspapers and editors will actually do some research, before running a story?

Shouldn't we hold the editor responsible for his comments, just as we would hold Mr. Churchill to his, or Mr. Imus to his, or Mr. Rather to his?

Shouldn't we proof read our letters to the editor, before submitting them with mis-spellings?

Shouldn't I know better than to ask these questions?

If that happened Dan2, then I don't think we'd have to fight all of the misinformation battles. And, then I think Leon could go back to making animal shaped balloons.

Profanity is the tool of the ignorant and uneducated.

Posted by Mickey on October 2, 2007 04:14 PM

The first amendment is NOT an anything goes proposition. CSU has policies like every other paper in the US(if they ever follow them)

"Profanity is the tool of the ignorant and uneducated."

I disagree. Profanity is a tool, yes, but mere use of it is not enough to categorize a person. It can be used properly as well as improperly.

As I said the last time this topic came up, I believe the editor at CSU used it ineptly and unimaginitively. Yes, a point can be made, a statement can be put forth, an insult can be launched -- all without profanity. But we should not deny ourselves (or anyone else) the ability to use these words.

Unless someone isn't any good at it. Then they can shut up.

Profanity is the tool of the ignorant and uneducated, as well as the resort to name calling in a discussion. When one can not articulate their point of view it has become acceptable to resort to these low handed tactics. Those who say it is free speech are the first in line to use such tactics.

The first Admendment is being raped. yes you have the right to say what you want but with this comes responsibility. Something that many refuse in todays world to take upon themselves. Blamming others for thier conduct and lack of self respect.

When one lowers the level of the conversation to that of which the editor at CSU has then he has opened the door for replies on the same level.

An old saying comes to mind " if you can't stand the heat then get out of the kitchen". Unfortunately they want it all one way. Do as I say not as I do.

NEW School prayer :

Now I sit me down in school
Where praying is against the rule
For this great nation under God
Finds mention of Him very odd.

If Scripture now the class recites,
It violates the Bill of Rights.
And anytime my head I bow
Becomes a Federal matter now.

Our hair can be purple, orange or green,
That's no offense; it's a freedom scene.
The law is specific, the law is precise.
Prayers spoken aloud are a serious vice.

For praying in a public hall
Might offend someone with no faith at all.
In silence alone we must meditate,
God's name is prohibited by the state.

We're allowed to cuss and dress like freaks,
And pierce our noses, tongues and cheeks.
They've outlawed guns, but FIRST the Bible.
To quote the Good Book makes me liable.

We can elect a pregnant Senior Queen,
And the 'unwed daddy,' our Senior King.
It's "inappropriate" to teach right from wrong,
We're taught that such "judgments" do not belong.

We can get our condoms and birth controls,
Study witchcraft, vampires and totem poles.
But the Ten Commandments are not allowed,
No word of God must reach this crowd.
It's scary here I must confess,
When chaos reigns the school's a mess.
So, Lord, this silent plea I make:
Should I be shot; My soul please take!
Amen

Your letter is so rife with falsehoods, innuendoes and outright fabrications that I'm at a loss on where to start. When in doubt, begin at the beginning.

This administration has never claimed to support a military strike against Iran let alone a nuclear one. They have always stated that diplomacy was the first and best option. However, if Iran continues on its path of developing a nuclear weapons program, a military alternative is not off the table.

Here's a question for you, is a nuclear armed Iran mullocracy OK with you? If it is, and a nuclear war breaks out between Iran and Israel with the resulting deaths of millions, does the U.S. have any responsibility? Or, would a limited military strike be the lesser of two evils?

I know you normally don't think of these things because you are busy asking your own "questions" by the tenor of your letter. But, these type of questions I raised are the ones from the real world.

Leon

Big difference between standing on a street corner and saying to somebody the sentiments printed in the CSU paper under the guise of an editorial. As a citizen, you have the right to free speech. So does the editor. However, with his free speech in the form of a printed editorial comes a responsibility to abide by the guidelines set down by CSU - the University that paper is sponsored by.

I fail to see where the Bush/Cheney administration is even attempting to curb the editor's free speech rights. They are not invloved in any manner.

Anything that comes out of it will be due to his failing to follow guidelines at CSU. It was his choice to print it, and his responsibility to accept the consequenes.

IMO, the "editorial" was sophomoric and juvenile. Some of you may like it. It may have been less offensive and better received had the editor actually articulated his case for his emotional outburst and laid out why he feels the way he does. What was printed instead seemed to be feelings, instead of articulated thoughts which is what I would expect from an editorial.

I also wonder what possible connection could the taser incident at a John Kerry speech have to do with Bush? I don't see the connection. Perhaps this intellectual posing as an editor could have enlightened us.

Those of you whining about free speech rights are barking up the wrong tree and trying to divert attention from the real issue. The editor made his bed and now has to lie in it. Time to grow up and be a man about it.

Mickey said with tight *ssed indignation:

"Profanity is the tool of the ignorant and uneducated."

And nowhere was this more evident than on the Senate floor, emanating from the thin lips of Dick Cheney....

Profanity has it's place. Smug little tsk tsk lessons in civility are much worse than so-called profanity.

Shouldn't we speak out against securing our borders!

Shouldn't we speak out against the 'Dream Act'.

Shouldn't we speak out against illegals getting drivers licenses in New York.
(maybe the250,000 in Denver will self-Deport to New York in search of the golden ticket)

Shouldn't we speak our against the continuing fraud of Americans Social Security Cards.

FU%K Leon!!!! and all the other illegals in colorado....

Come on, kiddies. You know as well as I do that if free speech were to be regulated the way the poor, abused, picked on "people for utter and total politeness" want it to be, there wouldn't be anyone left on this website as spokes-persons for Republicanism/"conservatism" today. And the forum wouldn't be fun anymore.

Posted by Old Grouch on October 3, 2007 06:46 PM

It is the ignorance of post 12:30 that ... .

Posted by JVB on October 4, 2007 09:43 AM

My, my, my.

It does appear that even despite the best efforts of the Republican/"conservative" claque to censor those they don't like, the principle of free speech is still alive and well in this Country anyway.

At leas, it is still alive - and doing rather well, too - up as CSU. The University authorities have "admonished" the young Editor, NOT fired him, as the ranting, raving, right-wingnuts would have had it.

Perhaps, it even goes to show that education is also alive, and doing rather well too. Again, in spite of the efforts of those who would reduce us all to their own status of blind, ignorant, and mindless followers of their particular "great leader" of the moment.

And now, watch them all crawl out from under their rocks to complain about how they're being "persecuted", because they can't manage to force everyone else to cease showing just how regressive and reactionary they really are.
