Prostitution should be a legal activity
Friday, October 26 at 12:01 AM

So, a Boulder Valley School District middle school counselor is now a "criminal"
and will probably lose his job ("Counselor pleads guilty to soliciting
prostitute," RockyMountainNews.com, Oct. 14). This is absurd!
It is time that prostitution be legalized between consenting adults. What is
wrong with people getting their needs met through an open mutual agreement?
Prostitution is a more honest relationship than many dates and/or marriages.
If prostitution were considered morally and legally acceptable, then just maybe
people could be more honest with each other, criminals wouldn't be making so much money off the misfortune of others, fewer people
would become sexual victims, participants might be healthier, and the government
could make some money off this huge, long-established industry.

I agree with you for the most part. However, after spending a great deal of time in Thailand, I've seen how it can be very detrimental to local people. Just keep it out of the streets and in the phone book and internet and it should be fine. Let them make housecalls so that the streets don't look like Patpong in Bangkok.

ah once again the republic of boulder is out to control the behavior of residents. I wonder if all of the so called officials who are making this decision are also after the ones who are having afairs? nah they are still working on more classes for expermenting with self pleasure, masturbation, and drug experimentation for the kiddies in school.

aaron just look at colfax and how many denver cops are walking the street looking like and acting like hookers to entrap some guy out looking for some action. they will never stop prostution ever.

So we need another government agency to manage and control prostitution?

If they ever do I think they should call it what it is.

The The National Agency for Pimping .

Just what we need in our schools a counselor, interacting with children and advising them, who visits prostitutes, because he can't get a date?

Is there any profession left that deals with children being asked to have even a little
character?

Posted by Can I get an AMEN! on October 26, 2007 07:27 AM

i prefer these school people who cant get dates go to a hooker rather than one of the kids at school.

Posted by on October 26, 2007 07:35 AM

Who said he couldn't get a date? No need to insult.....he probably just wanted "no strings attached". Either way, this type of thing is a personal choice that doesn't hurt anyone, and shouldn't be controlled by the gov't.

It is legal, its called politics. Don't believe me, wait till the convention.

Posted by Breeze on October 26, 2007 08:10 AM

It reminds me of what some celebrity once said when he was caught on a madam's list. An interviewer asked "what will people think of you when they find out that you paid these women for sex?" and he said "I didn't pay them for sex, I paid them to go away."

Posted by WhyNot? on October 26, 2007 08:55 AM

Prostitution is already legal...

The politicians--both dems and repubs-- have been screwing you for decades and you are paying for it. Case closed.

Posted by Hank on October 26, 2007 09:02 AM

This country has a very unhealthy attitude towards sex, not as unhealthy as Muslim countries, but unhealthy nonetheless. Street prostitution is a nuissance and really adds to the general decline of neighborhoods. If this country would have legal prostitution, I bet the vast majority of Johns and the vast majority of prostitutes would take their activities off the streets and into safe, clean, secure and legal premises. Everyone would be a winner, the Johns, the prostitutes, the gritty industrial areas where the brothels would be located, everyone except those who get off on demonizing sex.
Make sex legal for consenting adults and you would have more resources to go after those who are not consenting to prostitution and those who are too young to consent to prostitution.

Regardless of who the story is about (teachers should show better judgement, IMO) I have to agree. It's foolish to have it be illegal.

Posted by Mac on October 26, 2007 09:12 AM

Prostitution is still illegal in most states.
If people are going to say it's harmless though illegal, the same could be said about the illegals in this country.

What part of illegal does the counselor not understand?

Posted by Can I get an AMEN! on October 26, 2007 09:47 AM

I agree with Larry Gauthier uttering the same sentiment fifty years ago with the reply being that the mafia would step in and control it. I suggest banning Christians from public office, allow the existing gov't. licensing and tax collection, and zone this much needed enterprise into existence. Since Christianity bad mouths masturbation it can't be wrong for vaginal/penis contact and this way the seed is not spilled on the ground and surely the Mafia can be kept out of it.

Deicide Corner: As late as 1976, Pope Paul VI ruled that masturbation is a sin so heinous that god will never again love such a sinner.

why cruton...is foley or craig in town for the weekend?

Posted by jay on October 26, 2007 11:54 AM

Republicans would be hypocrites to stand in the way of prostitution, as they would be obstructing the free market. LOL.

Posted by Dan on October 26, 2007 11:59 AM

jay has a good point. If the people soliciting prostitution were mostly women, and men were the prostitutes, do you suppose it would still be illegal?

The religious right is too influential in politics, and religion itself has always been used as a way to control others, especially women. No different here.

It's encouraging to see positive posts on this topic, but interesting to see that all who choose to leave a name seem to be male. We should really see more women stepping up for basic civil liberties.

Posted by M Smith on October 26, 2007 12:09 PM

Larry of Franktown must really be a loser and toad and a "John" trolling east and west Colfax ave. It is usualy hard up guys have to pay for a women and want this vice legalized. Contrary to what some believe, prostitution is not a victimless profession. Women are basically exploited by physical abuse by their pimps and Johns and even murdered. Most are on drugs and deal STD's and unwanted pregancies.

No one needs to worry (from the customer's standpoint) about a prostitution bust. Those who are busted have only themselves to blame. They were just trying to get sexual services cheap.Wanna buy it safe and legal?Be prepared to pay airfare to Nevada, plus hotel and car rental, plus the $1500 per hour the brothel charges. Too expensive? Then learn a few lines from Jackson Browne's "Rosie".

If women selling their bodies is legal, God's displeasure will surely manifest in tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes and devastating fires.

Wait a minute, God already hates America,(thanks Phred Phelps) so why not legalize prostitution?

Posted by Holy Reality on October 26, 2007 02:05 PM

Holy Reality

God doesn't hate America or even a person like you. He will just give you the choice to manifest your own punishment. You can't mock God and not have it come back to you in some negitive way. Maybe you"ll have some sort of bad luck this weekend and then you'll say, Why me? Then you'll remember.

Posted by Last Laughs on You on October 26, 2007 02:47 PM

It is long past the time to legalize prostitution in this country.

Amen, here is the part of illegal I don`t understand. Why was it illegal only recently, for married couples in certain states to have oral sex?

Now we could cut down on criminal behavior by dumping many of our laws. How to cut crime 50%? Dump 50% of the laws on personal behavior. And no, not the ones that actually hurt another or another's property.

Last Laugh, it is a sin to speak for God, you might break a leg this weekend. Be very careful because the Goddess might be offended enough with you to really hurt you. Be very careful.

Aw Keith (10:09): You know how to hurt your benefactor who will duel to the death the many who seek your execution; just continue to get the facts, my boy, get the facts or the g__damn facts are gonna get you. I'll pray you are not one of those mf Christians, Islamics, or Judeo jocks whose penis elevates them to lord it over a female declaring themselves superior or I'll have to rethink my duty to save you.

Deicide Corner: According to the Calvinist/Presbyterian doctrine of predestination, God is even responsible for human evil. As creator of every individual, he knows in advance how each person will behave in life, and he knows in advance who will be saved and who will be damned

Legalize it, require monthly medical clearances and tax it appropriately.

Everyone has sexual urges, some cannot get those satisfied for one reason or another.

It shouldn't be illegal for you to pay to get your rocks off if that's what is needed.

It's got to be a drag though.

Both concepts are a bunch of superstitious poppycock.

But Last Laughs on You is gonna hang his hat on it.. heh..

A counselor should have better judgement- and so should members of Congress. Oh wait- Craig wasn't paying, so I guess its OK.

Posted by BO on October 27, 2007 08:21 AM

No Democrat member of congress ever paid for sex, only Republicans.

Hey Truth.

You got it right again. Guess the Rockies DO have a chance to win the series.

I can't wait to see how government would deal with this but if it's a choice between them messing with health care and messing with prostitution...by gosh give them the prostitution. Only result would be too many brothels so they would have to put one in each community to even things out.

Posted by momma y on October 27, 2007 08:54 PM

In Europe, prostitution is legal in many countries, and handled much better than in Asia. By making it legal, so many of the related problems are eliminated:

1. All employment benefits as with any other job (health insurance, life insurance, etc)
2. Salary controlled by prostitute, not pimp
3. Code of conduct between client and customer (both behavior and condoms)
4. Monthly health checkups
5. Enforcement of adults only (no underage prostitutes)
6. Safety of prostitute
and much more...

Not to mention the taxes raised just like any other service and better utilization of police manpower and time.

I fail to understand why prostitution is so against the common good that it needs to be illegal- if it's between two consenting adults, with no undue pressure, what's the problem? The only reason I can think of that it is still illegal is because of the religious fundamentalists.

Posted by fiesty on October 27, 2007 09:11 PM

An easy way to get around the laws against prostitution:

Have a 3rd person film it; then you are just making an adult movie.
