No one goes home empty handed
John McCain wins the Republican nomination.
Hillary Clinton wins a slightly smaller prize – Rhode Island. It’s something, though. The win ended Barack Obama’s 12-contest winning streak, and set Clinton up, she hopes, for a bigger night, as we wait for Ohio and we wait for Texas.
But John McCain has to wait no more. He swept the night and, with the sweep, now has enough delegates to clinch the nomination in St. Paul, Minn. Mike Huckabee made his concession speech, in which he cited the original St. Paul and also third baseman George Brett.
It is a remarkable comeback for McCain, who was – as we’ll hear dozens of times before the night is over – written off by nearly everyone except his mom last summer when his campaign was broke and people actually thought Rudy Giuliani would win.
McCain goes to the White House today. Presumably, that’s to have a photo op with George Bush and not to measure for new curtains.
