'Warming emissions' tax to pay for renewable projects?

How does the notion of paying about $2.50 per month extra on your home heating bill to fund renewable energy projects strike you?

That's the proposition Clean Energy Progress plans to place on the November ballot, reports Todd Hartman.

Under its plan, a Colorado household with average energy use would pay about $2.50 more a month on its bill. A big- box retailer would pay roughly $1,300 a month more.

The fee would raise an estimated $180 million a year to be invested in various energy-efficiency and renewable projects, as well as those designed to capture and store carbon emissions, the group said.

"Colorado voters understand that renewable energy is key to our state's economic future and our energy security," said Tom McKinnon, a Colorado School of Mines professor with Clean Energy Progress, in a statement.

The program is similar to one approved by voters in Boulder in 2006. A tax on electricity, but not natural gas consumption, added roughly $16 a year to a homeowner's power bill and $46 for businesses.

At its Web site, CleanEnergy Progress.org, the group said the statewide program would result in a "net savings" of about $600 million a year because of the cut in energy consumption from efficiency investments.

Good idea? Would you vote for it? Think it has a chance given the economic climate?

NO WAY should this tax happen!! What in tarnation is happening?? WE ALREADY VOTED in a HUGE TAX INCREASE for road maintenance, education and healthcare state spending--wasn't it something called Ref. C.?? Now tax-and spend Ritter wants MORE money that will end up in state pet pork projects. Let's have fiscal accountability at every level of state employment called "government", so we really know where the money goes!

We do need this program, but I would rather that it be developed by an entity that has some degree of accountability in effectively using the funds they collect for it.

Renewable Energy Needs to PAY IT'S OWN WAY writes:

WHAT is going on here? WHO do these idiots think they are? WHY should everyone PAY through the nose for THIS PET PROJECT? It's all well and good that Coloradoans think that renewable energy is the "key" to Colorado's future(although some of us never gave it a thought in quite this way.) However, this is yet ANOTHER tax for everyone that needs to move into the private sector, and be funded the way most "capitalist" ideas get funded: by investors, not by a tax imposed on everyone. Besides, no matter what these yahoos come up with, OUR energy bills will continue to be sky-high. And that's the sorry truth.

Such "alternatives" are doomed to continue tocontribute single-digit levels to our energy requirements, they will remain tomorrow's "alternatives."

Crude, coal, nuclear and natural gas, of which we have abundant untapped supplies, are the answer for tomorrow. I don't need to contribute $2.50 a month to some wacky environuts windmill factory.

CONCORD, N.H. -- In his final push for a primary victory, Senator John McCain arrived here this afternoon and made a pitch that might have surprised voters: He cast himself as the environmentalist of the presidential campaign.

"I will clean up the planet," McCain said. "I will make global warming a priority."

McCain often says that he wants to reduce dependence on foreign oil and that he wants to increase the use of nuclear power. His usual line is that these efforts also will help reduce global warming
