I-70 tolls killed but Ike Hike lives

i70trafficrtl.jpg

At some point in the near future you're probably going to have to pay to travel I-70 through the Colorado mountains.

The legislature turned down a proposal for tolls during weekend ski traffic rush-hours as well as on Sundays year-around. However, a plan to impose a toll of up to $5 each way at the Eisenhower Tunnel was approved by the Senate Transportation Committee.

Chris Barge reports:

Sen. Andy McElhany's bill is aimed at providing $3.5 billion for whatever highway improvements between Floyd Hill and Summit County are determined necessary.

The Colorado Springs Republican's bill would exempt residents of Clear Creek, Summit and Gilpin counties from the toll. But opponents complained that businesses in the mountain corridor depend on workers from Denver and elsewhere who shouldn't be tolled for driving to work.

Greg Fulton, president of the Colorado Motor Carriers Association, which represents the trucking industry, told the committee that the bill could violate the federal Commerce Clause because it creates a special class of people exempt from the toll.

"I can't imagine that's a factor," McElhany said later.

Other opponents argued that toll booths would slow down traffic. While McElhany's bill does not dictate where the toll booths would be built, he assured the committee that they could be erected off the shoulder of the highway so as not to impede traffic.

McElhany's bill heads next to the Senate Appropriations Committee, where it must be approved before being considered by the full Senate.

Is the Eisenhower toll plan reasonable? How would you deal with the congestion? Bus service? A high-speed train from DIA to Vail constructed with both public and private funds?

    5. What about this voucher idea where we can spend our $12. at the ski lodge restaurant. Is this Guv't cheese all over again? A chipolte burrito incentive to get out of my way?

    6. You do know what's coming when the Guv't issues our $600. tax refund stimulate the economy checks this Spring, car dealers and furniture stores are already setting up their "sign over your checks here" booths. This reminds me of the movie Caddyshack where the old guy (Ted?) is launching his sail boat with a champaign celebration and ask the caddy, Danny, "what are doing on Saturday". Danny is thinking cool, I can hang out with the Beaver Creek people and go sailing, so he says " why nothing sir". Then Ted drops the bomb, " good, then you can come over and mow my lawn". Classic.

Every bit as popular as the proverbial turd in a punch bowl, charging a toll doesn't fix the problem. Mountain topography makes highway widening prohibitive, so the solution is to move people faster. How does putting up a toll gate and stopping everyone to collect the fee effect that?

At 60-mph, one bus carrying 30 passengers requires 150-feet of roadway for safe following at peak traffic capacity. Let's be generous and assume that each car carries 5 passengers. At 60-mph, the car also needs about 150-feet of roadway. The six cars needed to carry the 30 passengers require at least 900-feet of roadway. Chances are that there are less than 5 passengers per car, so add another 150-feet per car. A bus requires less than 1/10th the roadway to carry an equal number of passengers at peak traffic capacity. This is why you idiots should learn some math.

As the number of vehicles increases at peak traffic, the available safe following distance decreases and the traffic must slow down, which is why the average speed is approaching something like 10-mph.

The solution: make all the skiers from down below ride the bus.

How? Make all the ski resorts include bus service in the price of the lift ticket and then provide that bus service.

Jesus! Why are you people so clueless?

I probably shouldn't let this one out of the bag but for those who want to see what real snow is like you may try looking south. I am getting ready to head up this AM to a local resort with no crowds, no man-made snow and no bumper to bumper traffic, see Monarch.com!
How about a resort that is owned by locals, you can park and walk to the lifts and you never have to travel the I-70 corridor. Plus it has some of the sickest terrain in the state (Mirkwood). My apologies to those who have discovered the bliss of NOT skiing amongst the Denver hordes. Yeah it is a longer drive, but with the congestion on 70 you will spend about the same amount of time in the car plus you get to play at an area that is a throwback to what it was like 30 years ago.....

I've made the big drive to Wolf Creek twice 2 years ago for the snow with a co-worker who raves about it. Even rented a room there not far from the resort that allowed my dog.
I forgot, my co-worker is a snow boarder from out of state and doesn't need the steep and speed. I practically came to a stop 200 yards before getting to the chair lift. It's not steep enough for me. It's best runs are hardly blue. Great place to take the kids I would imagine. I don't have any kids.
It's been 10 years since I've done Monarch, maybe I'll have to go back. I can't remember the terrain too well. Does it have good blacks?

Are we building this high speed elevated light rail or not?
It can't be a train, trains don't have the traction to go up the hill on rail, that's why it takes 6 hours to take Amtrack from Denver to Glenwood Springs- you have to detour the thing practically to Wyoming to avoid the passes.
I'm ready, get those Colorado no bid contracts flowing, All aboard, I'll even listen crazy train with shaggy on the trip. Once. Then it's the easy listening Dead hour.

Hey, I have a 2004 Subaru Forester with a turbo, standard transmission, and I love it. I bought it off the showroom floor. I never thought I would own anything that even remotely resembles a stationwagon, but it was number one in safety ratings when compared to small SUV's and the insurance rates are much lower than for a normal SUV. My biggest pet peeve is people driving in the left lane when not passing. I have no problem driving in the mountains with the power the turbo provides, but the gas mileage is not quite as good with that kicking in all of the time. I like to pass quickly and get back in the lane where I belong.

This is yet another one of those "this won't raise your taxes" tax hikes. The state borrowed from future federal revenue to finance T-Rex, and are now short on money while they are repaying the debt. Duh.

T-Rex was a disaster. Traffic still slows at the same places, it just does it in between federal agenda items like light rail, Lexus lanes and on-ramp metering. Just what we needed - traffic jams with Washington, D.C. polish on them, and long term debt to drain our future.

The only solution to traffic west out of Denver is more roads, not wider roads. Keep improving 285, and add a hookup to Breckenridge from Fairplay. Make Clear Creek Canyon a four or six lane superhighway, and add a hookup from Henderson mine to Silverthorne.

...or cower in denial, smoke some crack, and believe that a $5 toll will solve the problem.

Alternatives already exist for skiers wishing to avoid the I-70 gridlock, but few people are willing to be flexible. This is also true for Senator Chris Romer, who won't consider ideas other than his own for reducing traffic.

A simple, low-cost test can be used to determine just how many skiers and snowboarders would actually use a proposed train to the mountains. In addition, the test would show us exactly what I-70 would be like without 16,000 cars per day.

Visit www.FreeSkiBus.org to see how it works. Clicking here is the only way to see the proposal because the Rocky Mountain News isn't interested in covering it. Decide for yourself if the idea has merit.

A $5 toll is highway robbery. Folks back east have toll roads, lots of 'em, but they are absolutely astounded when they discover how much it costs to go a few miles on E470.

"How did this ever come to pass?" they ask.

"Colorado's a red state," I explain, "where huge profits are made by government-created businesses all the time."

It's at this point that I usually cite the emissions test racket and the accident-creating traffic light cameras erected in the name of safety.

Truth is, the notion that the state doesn't already have enough money to maintain and improve the highway system as needed is a farce.

Colorado is an income tax state, meaning they're getting HUGE revenues from virtually everyone in the state (check your tax bill from last year).

Maintaining public infrastructure is Number 1 on my list of things that tax money should be getting used for.

If there isn't enough left to do that, then maybe the state should stop spending it on other misguided things, like the booming penententiary system needed to incarcerate those guilt of victimless "crimes" like drug possession & use---things widely understood to be diseases requiring treatment, not crimes for which punishment has shown to have any significant effect.
