Denver hosting Latino hoops fest

Saturday, May 20 at 6:00 AM

Denver resident Mario Lozoya did not play sports when he attended John F. Kennedy High School. He became a father as a teenager, and dropped out of school seeking full-time work to support a family.

Years later Lozoya earned his General Educational Development certificate. He became an official United States citizen last year and currently is the director of the Alta Milla Latino Sports Foundation, which will host its Mile High Latino Basketball Tournament June 30-July 2.

Tournament games are scheduled to be played at the University of Denver's Ritchie Center. There are four divisions (ages 10-12, high school, open and Masters 35-older). Registration is open to all interested players both in and outside of Colorado.

Lozoya, 43, is hoping for a strong show of participation from the Latino community.
"We're trying to raise education awareness within the Latino community. The Latino drop-out rate is entirely too high. It's high for inner-city youths across the board. We want to use sports as a vehicle to keep kids in school."

For registration and sponsorship information, call 720-298-1325, or go to the Web site www.altamillahoops.com.

NOTEWORTHY

Leave it to TNT studio analyst Charles Barkley to doubt the age -- and citizenship -- of Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James. "LeBron is from the Dominican Republic. He's not 21."

The next win for Colorado Crush coach Mike Dailey will be the 100th of his career in the Arena Football League.

Talking about feeling the heat? How about Phoenix Suns guard Steve Nash. A two-time league MVP bowing out of the playoffs at home against the L.A. Clippers? Man, that'll leave an ugly scar on the Hall of Fame application.
