Atheist Diversionary Tactics

By Dr. RC Metcalf, Colorado Springs

The new atheists are a tumescent bunch, unquestionably articulate, yet consummately misguided. Their incendiary rhetoric can’t help but stir the emotions of the majority of America’s religious. Yet why do they ultimately choose to target Christianity above all other religious systems, when Islam presents a clear and present danger?

They routinely build a straw man version of Christianity based not upon the Ten Commandments and the morality of the Christ, but rather upon Old Testament Levitical laws that have long since been abrogated. They cannot be so naïve as to believe that Christians condone the murder of back talking children, yet that is exactly the sort of rhetoric they routinely tout. In the latest books by avowed atheists, such as Richard Dawkins’ The God Delusion, Christopher Hitchens’ God is Not Great and Sam Harris’ Letter to a Christian Nation, the crux of the problem lies undisturbed. It never seems to surface amongst the pestiferous rhetoric of the atheist leaders.

They call for a secular America that mimics the “least religious societies on earth,” such as Norway, Denmark, Belgium and most Western Europe, believing that the “end of religion” is an achievable goal. Yet, Western Europe has undergone an unprecedented decline in population that threatens its very existence. Conversely, the Middle East and Africa saw the greatest population growth during the 1990s, in nations that are predominantly Islamic. Osama Bin Laden was one of 53 children and has sired at least 27 of his own, due to Islam’s “progressive” view of polygamy.

The new atheists applaud Western European openness toward matters of gender equality and abortion, yet both of these departures from traditional religious mores have contributed to the dwindling population problem. Sam Harris, in his Letter to a Christian Nation, submits that “seventy percent of the inmates of France’s jails are Muslim.” He obtusely observes that Western European Muslims are generally not atheists, implying that atheists are not part of the “problem.”

However, by not recognizing the real problem, and by diverting attention toward Christianity rather than Islam, neither are they part of the solution. France’s tolerance has permitted their Muslim population to exceed 10%. Their hospitality has already been reciprocated with Islamic car bombings and gang riots. In America, the Muslim population is generally estimated at less than 2% of the population.

The increase in Europe’s Muslim population, along with population decline among European nationals, is changing the demographic climate in the cradle of continental philosophy.

Rather than a progressive transformation toward analytic scientism and a consummately secular society, Europe is slowly and methodically regressing by embracing the ancient Mesopotamian culture that has emigrated from the cradle of civilization.

The new atheists aren’t the only ones with an agenda. While Sam Harris wants to see “the end of faith,” Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wants to see the end of Israel and the United States. Saudi Arabian oil money is pouring into our nation’s colleges and universities, mosques and Islamic day schools, at an alarming rate. Saudi monies don’t fund new science labs, libraries or gymnasiums, but rather Middle Eastern Studies programs, many of which have become bastions of radical jihadist thought. There is one thing virtually all Muslims agree upon, the need for Shari’a Law and the emergence of an Islamic caliphate that will rule the entire Middle East and, if possible, the entire globe.

President Bush entered Iraq with the goal of liberating the Iraqis from the tyranny of Saddam Hussein, much like President Roosevelt entered Europe to liberate that part of the world from the maniacal control of Adolf Hitler.

Our presence in Iraq has two very reasonable purposes: to aid the Iraqis in stabilizing their nation and to keep an eye on their next door neighbor, who unabashedly considers us the “Great Satan.” The new atheists are diverting our attention from America’s real problem by blurring the distinct boundaries between theistic religions.

If all religions believe they are right, then they all must be wrong. There is a greater truth most of us probably are looking for, and it won't be found in any of their books. The best chance with the most progress is through science. But isn't that one of the subjects not being funded under No Child Left Behind? Religous people go for their weekly brainwashing usually on Sundays where they are required to leave their thinking caps at the door and listen obediently to the leaders of their flocks. What a colossal waste of a great weekend morning...religious leaders are such hypocrites as well. Am sure Mr Metcalf will have his day in the papers just like the others. A little advice? Come up with your own ideas based on science and research, be true to yourself and don't give a dime to a church.

The new atheists are a tumescent bunch...

...as opposed to the old atheists that were a more flaccid group. Can Viagra to blame? Do tell Rev.

If atheists spoke out as loud about Muslims as they do about Christians ,they would be killed.So they pick on the weaker target.

What Athiest has the guts to become the next Salmon Rushie?

So some of you don't put me in the christian category,I do not believe in organized religion,but I do belive in God.
I don't believe in giving money to churches so their leaders can live like Gods while preaching God will only allow you into Heaven if you give at least 10% of your income to him. I don't think that was in the bible,but I could be wrong. Most Bible thumpers can find a saying in the Bible to fit any situation.

If I do go to Hell , I know alot of people I will speak very highly of.

I will paraphrase ghandi
i like your christ, he's a pretty cool dude
but what's up with christians?
So many are so unlike christ

the thinly veiled prejuidice and hate in "Dr." Metcalf is disturbing. If we asked him "who would jesus bomb?" I'm sure he might seriously answer "tehran."

Doc:
About 33% of the world's population is considered christian, 67% are not.

Saudi money continues to pour into the pockets of Bush and Cheney. For Prince Bandar of SA is known as Bandar Bush and has been called the adopted son of daddy and mommie Bush.
Bush didn't go to Iraq to save the Iraqis from Saddam Hussein, he went in because Iraq is the 2nd largest oil producing nation in the world, or at least it was before the Bush/Cheney fiasco. As a christian you should remember: thou shalt not lie.

THE MIDDLE EAST PLANTATION: Iraq-NAM is all about stealing oil and exterminating Muslims. Bush's "cruise missile" democracy reeks, just like the democracy my forefathers got, when they were enslaved and brought to America. They were stripped of their native language, religion, customs, and our women-folk, were raped and bred like cattle, in the plantation "massas" pursuits of Herculean slaves. Hitler's cloning was copy-cat. I am astonished that Bush, like Saddam, also unleashed chemical weapons on unsuspecting Iraqi citizens. Bush used white phosphrous projectiles (WILLIE PETER) on Iraqi women and children, under the guise, our Rx drugged troops, were "rooting-out" insurgents from residential areas. The WILLIE PETER I saw used in my 3 deployments to Vietnam, burned through both the skin and bones of Vietnamese citizens. Bush should be tried in an international court of law for war crimes, just like we intended for Hitler. What would Patton do?

What is a "new atheist". I am 67 and have been an atheist since I began to think, read and reason, for 60 years or so. I haven't read those books so I can't comment about them but everyone should re-read that resolution to invade Iraq often. I get so angry I weep when I do. Right here in the pages of this newspaper, people who were in Iraq were begging us to re-think that decsion.

No one who voted for it should be President--dogcatcher, maybe.

"They cannot be so naïve as to believe that Christians condone the murder of back talking children, yet that is exactly the sort of rhetoric they routinely tout."

Perhaps because Christians zealots justify their position by nothing more than "IT'S IN THE BIBLE!" So which are the "right" parts of the Bible and which parts have been "abrogated"? And who says?

And does Mr. Metcalf know that the word tumescent generally refers to an erect penis?

Posted by Hans Christian Brando on July 7, 2007 12:26 PM

And here's the rub of aligning one version of 'God' with a specific administration and political ideology/ambition-- case in point, given how much Bush himself has credited 'God' for guiding his decisions, both foreign and domestic, after 6 years now we can safely conclude that his 'God' is incompetent, dishonest, and unjust. That doesn't sound like the the God I was raised to worship, but rather the Father of Lies. But to each his own "Reverend."

docjay, your ignorance is showing.

Learn more about Christ and his role in fulfilling the old covenant and establishing the new one. Otherwise you are simply braying from ignorance.

Secondarily, go re-read the documents surrounding the authorization for the war in Iraq, and the authorization itself, as well as the supporting UN Reolutions.

You'll find 58 counts in the declaration, the word that CONGRESS approved, including the following:

"
Whereas Iraq persists in violating resolutions of the United Nations Security Council by continuing to engage in brutal repression of its civilian population thereby threatening international peace and security in the region, by refusing to release, repatriate, or account for non-Iraqi citizens wrongfully detained by Iraq, including an American serviceman, and by failing to return property wrongfully seized by Iraq from Kuwait; "

Whereas United Nations Security Council Resolution 678 authorizes the use of all necessary means to enforce United Nations Security Council Resolution 660 and subsequent relevant resolutions and to compel Iraq to cease certain activities that threaten international peace and security, including the development of weapons of mass destruction and refusal or obstruction of United Nations weapons inspections in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 687, repression of its civilian population in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 688, and threatening its neighbors or United Nations operations in Iraq in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 949;

Whereas Congress in the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution (Public Law 102-1) has authorized the President "to use United States Armed Forces pursuant to United Nations Security Council Resolution 678 (1990) in order to achieve implementation of Security Council Resolutions 660, 661, 662, 664, 665, 666, 667, 669, 670, 674, and 677";

Whereas in December 1991, Congress expressed its sense that it "supports the use of all necessary means to achieve the goals of United Nations Security Council Resolution 687 as being consistent with the Authorization of Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution (Public Law 102-1)," that Iraq's repression of its civilian population violates United Nations Security Council Resolution 688 and "constitutes a continuing threat to the peace, security, and stability of the Persian Gulf region," and that Congress, "supports the use of all necessary means to achieve the goals of United Nations Security Council Resolution 688";

Whereas the Iraq Liberation Act (Public Law 105-338) expressed the sense of Congress that it should be the policy of the United States to support efforts to remove from power the current Iraqi regime and promote the emergence of a democratic government to replace that regime;

"
And also remember that Iraq had been shooting at our airccraft in violation of the treaty after the first gulf war - which itself is an act of war.

And further note that the laws and UN citations above are all Clinton & Bush-41 era laws.

And the mentions of WMD do not raise posesssion, but capability.

So in other words, docjay, you lose.

Get the truth, not the leftist propaganda, before you talk the next time, and maybe you will not be so humiliated in public.

Posted by Ordinary Coloradan on July 7, 2007 10:11 AM

Addressing the first response:
the abrogation of old testament Mosaic law occurred because of the sacrifice of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, which had been prophesied. The former laws were types and shadows of what was to come, which was the ultimate fulfillment of the law by Jesus Christ. A deep and guided study of Scripture from cover to cover will help to clarify this.

The moral law remains today, as even Christ acknowledged, "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." Matthew 5:17.

Posted by Gail K on July 7, 2007 10:09 AM

It's your bible that contains the indefensible. And if it's the word of God how can it be "abrogated"? It's hardly a ringing endorsement of Christianity to say that it's not as bad as Islam.

But the most laughable comment is that "President Bush entered Iraq with the goal of liberating the Iraqis from the tyranny of Saddam Hussein." That's not what he said at the time and that's not why congress gave him authority to invade. Remember those non-existent WMDs?
