After the straw

As crazy as this sounds, the Republican presidential race still has not STARTED.
Yes, yes, the GOP tried to winnow the field a bit with Saturday's carnival-like celebration (of democracy and vote-buying) at the straw poll in Ames, Iowa.
But former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson wasn't there -- he shows his face in Iowa later in the week, and any time now he's expected to throw his hat into the ring.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was in Ames, continuing his flirtation with the contest.
Sure, Gingrich already has called former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who finished second on Saturday night, a "most intriguing dark horse" in the race, but if His Newtness decides the race needs another one, he might throw his hat in the ring, too.
So the field isn't even set.
Saturday night's results do reshuffle the deck, and you can watch this space and Monday morning's ink-stained version of the Rocky Mountain News for a look at the lay of the land going forward.
But if anyone thinks they know how this part of the race for the White House is going to turn out, they're doggone daffy.

Whoa Are you sure you didn't get sidetracked to a Phil Lesh show. I had no Idea the Republicans had so many Deadhead supporters!

ME,
Great shots! Even your archives.
You're right about the Repubs "not started."
Jack Kisling had a saying "If it doesn't run, chrome it." Maybe some of those fellers are hung up at the chrome shops, looking for those hubcaps that look like they're goin' `round and `round, while the vehicle's at a stand still.
