Ben and Bikes

The news about Ben Roethlisberger has been shocking and concerning. He is an incredibly talented quarterback who has the ability to win multiple Super Bowls, yet now his future is in question. We will never know, of course, if a helmet would have prevented the severity of the injuries he sustained in his recent motorcycle accident, but my guess is that it would have. It's a shame. But maybe there are lessons to be learned by it all. Hopefully every young person who rides a screaming rocket off into the sunset will do so wearing a helmet. At least I can make an effort in today's cartoon to point the way.

Here are the rough drafts that went into the cartoon.

When I first heard the news, it took a few moments to sink in. I agree with your thoughts about Ben Roethlisberger and the way people drive so inconsiderate and without courtesy these days, I am surprised he did not have a helmet on.
I ride a motorcycle and never go out without a protective jacket, gloves and a helmet. I have a padded jacket that lets the air flow through it on hot days.
I was thinking you might have come up with a cartoon that had a lot helmet manufacturers' sales reps and their lawyers all lined up at the hospital with contracts for Ben to help sell their helmets via commercials and billboard ads, sort of like Nike would. I was laughing at the thought of him all bandaged up in a hospital bed with them all lined up outside the door! Anyway, just my strange thoughts.... But good luck to Ben and hope he gets better quick...he owes the Broncos a rematch in this upcoming season's playoffs!!!!

Why is there always so little accountability about the person who hits the motorcyclists? Here we frequently have deaths from cars who turn right into motorcyclists - and no tickets are issued. Riding a motorcycle is inherently dangerous, and many deaths would not be prevented by helmets.
When is vehicular homicide appropriate? Tickets should be issued - people should lose their driver's license for life! Maybe everyone over 60 should get annual DMV tests, including vision and reflexes.
It's not enough to simply say "I didn't see them".

I know this is really boring and you are skipping to the next comment, but I just wanted to throw you a big thanks - you cleared up some things for me!
