Bozos of Blitz # 5

drew1006toon.gif

Mark Wolf asked me Wednesday during our Rocky Talk online conversation (see Thursdays blog for the archive of that) if I thought CU could be successful under Dan Hawkins. Yes, they can be but only if the right Alumni there step forward and say enough is enough. CU IS NOT Princeton or Yale or Harvard. It is a state university that should be representing the state in every endeavor as best as it can. Put up the money, shut up the snobby academicians in Boulder who think they are at Stanford and start to support the student athletes and the athletic program. Otherwise, drop out of the Big Twelve and join Conference USA or the Mountain West. It's where the schools who can't afford football and sometimes don't care about it put their programs. Do you think Texas wants a lousy football program because, gee, their law school is really good and they really don't want to give the wrong impression? Or Oklahoma? Or Nebraska, for crying out loud? No. They realize every part of their university is a billboard to the country. A billboard of a comittment to excellence both academically and athletically. They are proud and not afraid to show it. It's time CU. The program is at a crossroads. A serious crossroads. Time is running out. Lose this chance to back the school and you'll be seeing a new future. One in El Paso on Saturday nights instead of Ann Arbor and Austin on Saturday afternoons. It's come to that.

Wow, talk about perspective, I'd be very unhappy to live in Lincoln (while being a buffs fan right now). Your comments really ring true, CU's big wigs really need to remember that we're in the Big 12, not the Ivy League (I've been to Brown University, and CU has way to big of a stadium).

I live in Lincoln and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Yeah, we may not have the great scenery or skiing and all that nearby, but until you've lived in Lincoln, I don't think you should really be bashing it because it's a nice city to live in.

Drew, seeing how I was born in Lincoln then moved to Colorado with my family in 1978, I have a unique perspective on both Lincoln and Boulder. There's nothing wrong with Lincoln....great people, a great community, no hippies in Lincoln, schools are good, best pizza ever (Valentino's), I'd put Firethorn Golf Course up against anything Boulder has, including that flat Flatirons course in Boulder. Yeah the scenery is not what Boulder can offer with the mountains but Lincoln has by far the best and smartest college football fans. Oh yes Drew one other thing.....when was the last time the University of Nebraska was on national TV because the student body started bon fires in the streets? I'll take Lincoln over Boulder anyday

Matthew, CU fans have a chip on their shoulder when it comes to Nebraska because they wish that they had 1/2 the program, facilities, and alumni support that Nebraska gets. Everyone has heard of Husker Nation...anybody ever hear about Buffalo Nation?

Never heard of Buffalo Nation........but I have heard of Bronco Country!!!! Growing up in Denver I rooted for and still root for the Buffaloes. I will agree that CU has never had the type of program that NE built over the years. But, this city and state is even MORE passionate about our Broncos. That is why NE is passionate about their Husker football....nothing else to root for. And though the Buffaloes do have a long road ahead of them, I think the Huskers are far from the dominating team they once were in the mid-90's. And I'll take the hiking, fishing, camping, bike riding, rock climbing, skiing, and yes...even the hippies over the cornfields of NE any day of the week.

i too have lived in both lincoln and near boulder and would also take lincoln over boulder anyday. this may be bronco country and that may be where your support is but guess what, we have a slightly smaller city than denver and our college football team has more support and a bigger stadium than your pro team/stadium. how sad is that. they also have a chip on their shoulder because um how many times has cu beet NEBRASKA in the last 30 years? like 5,6 times?

Drew, your comment about putting CU in the Mountain West with all the other schools who don’t care about their athletic programs is IGNORANT, UNINFORMED and typical of the big conference fan. This year’s version of CU football does not mean it is suitable only for “inferior” conferences. The Buffs would get smoked in the Mountain West or any other major conference. Utah, TCU, AFA, WYO and CSU have made names for themselves beating UCLA, Arizona, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and yes CU in bowl games and the regular season. Just as you suggest your relief that you don’t have to live in Lincoln...the fans of the Mountain West Conference are relieved we don’t have to live anywhere close to Boulder and the superior set.

What is with all this Husker hatin by Dan "I lost to Baylor" Hawkins? The Buffs have a better chance of hiring Mike Shanahan than they do of winning a game this year. Maybe they should go back to using prostitution and underage drinking as a recruting tool. There is no doubt Nebraska has the most loyal and classiest fans in all of college football. I can't remember the last time they had to stop a game in Lincoln and move the entire student section becuase they were being disruptive and sore losers. Go Huskers.

no i dont think that at all. i just think its funny that your media, instead of talking about your time and how could they get their first win has instead shifted to nothing but talk about how NEBRASKA really isnt that good. its pathetic. when your 0-6 you cant talk about who is good and who isnt. yes we have a bigger fan base. our stadium is bigger and we are followed nationally by fans. yes we have more scholar athletes that cu.

    Marc Gustafson writes:

I agree with Drew. If CU wants their athletic program to be one of the best, they need to step up and make it happen. They need to actively get the alumni more involved in donations (re: indoor practice facility) and get a better atmosphere not only in Boulder but the entire state.
As far as Husker land goes. They do have some of the best fans anywhere. I've been to a game in Lincoln and they were great hosts. I think it's only the Husker fans living in CO that are kind of a crazy. One thing everyone needs to remember. NU is one of the only things Nebraska really has to call their own. CO has five division one universities, seven major professional sports franchises, several minor league franchises, the mountains and all of its great activities, plus the fittest people in all of the USA. What it boils down to is that the people in CO have a lot more options, and that all of their energy is not funneled into one entity like Nebraskans are for NU.
CU is going through a tough time but coach Hawkins will in time turn out to be a great hire.

Husker Nation, please read the great post below by Marc. Couldn't have said it better. I really like all of the assumptions you have made as well......no hardcore facts to back them up so that's all your points will be......assumptions. They really make no sense......I guess only Denver Bronco Fans are allowed to live in the state of CO (because I guess they are NOT followed nationally as you suggest). And you know what is more pathetic than talking about a mediocre Nebraska team......someone who hops on to thier "rivals" local newspaper to talk trash. YOu'd think some people would have better things to do with their time.........well, in NE I guess there isn't much to do so I take that back.

Buffalo in CO....What is with you hanging on to this Bronco kick? Are your Buffs so terrible that the Broncos are your scape goat for making argument against NU? Mark Gustafson hit it right on the nail. All Nebraska has is NU. That is why they are so passionate about them. That is what makes NU so great, the fans. If you took away everything from Colorado and left just CU, you might have a chance to have as great of fans as NU. But hey, look on the bright side. The Broncos look awesome this year.

There is no argument here. Nebraska is only the 4th team to reach 800 victories. They lead the nation in Academic All Americans. They also lead the Big 12 in players now playing in the NFL. It's funny to read all the comments from the CU backers. CU has a mediocre (at best) football program that is still riding the coattails of a national championship that happened 16 years ago, which they couldn't even win outright (shared with Georgia Tech I believe). I'm tired of the Buffs. Also, comparing places to live is stupid. I don't live in Boulder or Lincoln, nor do I want to...I don't even like driving through Boulder.
