The Hardaway

Some cartoons are just more painful to draw than others. It hurt a lot, for instance, to draw the Darrent Williams cartoons. So many of the tribute and memorial cartoons are like that. This one today was painful for many different reasons. I cringed while sketching the Hitler and Klan figures. They make me nauseous just to think about them. But I felt that I needed them to make my point as strong and as hard-hitting as posssible. Hate is Hate. It is ugly and, yes, obscene. This cartoon was also painful for a different reason . I went to UTEP, where Tim Hardaway played his collegiate basketball. There aren't a lot of things to brag about at UTEP (thankfully, the '66 national championship team that started five black players for the first time ever in a title game will always be remembered), but Tim Hardaway was one of them. Not anymore. His statement about "hating gays" scares me. And it makes me mad that he has disgraced the NBA, UTEP sports and basically all of humanity by ignorantly spouting off. To be honest, it disgusts me that he thinks that way. And I know there are others who feel the same way, which makes me more than disgusted. It makes me feel sad.
And when I feel that way I think about a few old lyrics . . .
All we need is love . . . love is all we need.
And what the world needs now is love, sweet love,
that's the only thing that there's just too little of . . .

What is even more disturbing, and sickens me even more is the "after".....
Hardaway said this as part of his "apology."
"I don't hate gay people," Hardaway said. "I'm a goodhearted person. I interact with people all the time. ... I respect people. For me to say 'hate' was a bad word, and I didn't mean to use it."
WHAT??????? Eh? I listened VERY carefully to EVERY WORD you said in your "interview" Mr. Hardaway, and you ABSOLUTELY MEANT EVERY DAMN WORD YOU SAID. Don't try to lie about it now just because you woke up and realized that you have now been released from ever doing any public work for the NBA and that those comments ultimately hit you in your WALLET.
Mr. Hardaway, you are a very disgusting person. You are the face of everything that is wrong with this world. You are the face of why people get killed every day. You are the face of why people cannot get medical treatment, or why they aren't allowed custody of their kids, and on and on.
Another comment from Hardaway...
"It was like, you know, I had killed somebody. ... I never knew that this was going to escalate that high," Hardaway said.
You never knew? You never once thought for a second that you might actually OFFEND SOMEONE?
You Mr. Hardaway, have just defined yourself as easily THE most ignorant person breathing. I hope you never make another cent off your name and that you find that the decent thing to do is to go away from the public eye permanently and leave everyone alone. Good riddance to you, Mr. Hardaway.
Enjoy your little piece of purgatory.

Hitler hated Jews, ended up killing millions of them and dragging the world into war.
The KKK hate African Americans. They torture, harass, and sometimes kill them.
Tim Hardaway said he hates gay people. He now has no job with the NBA.
How can you even compare the 3?? I agree what Tim said was wrong, but he does not even compare to the first 2. It definately is a sick world.

But this is just freaking stupid.

Yep. U are officially a liberal weenie in my eyes and as of today I just can't stand your cartoons. Used to be a big fan of yours Drew, but something has happened with you. What if I say "I hate Hitler" or "I hate people who hate" - is that not okay?
ALso, why does everyone have to feel and think the same in our society. If he hates gays that's his perogative and choice. I think it's about time that the RMN puts your cartoon along side that other lib - Ed Stein.

15 yard penalty for piling on.
Using the Hitler/KKK cards is VERY tiresome and how you can connect the dots to vicious murderers is stupid.
Hardaways comments were quite harsh but why give him anymore exposure. Speaking of hate speech/homosexuals - will you be doing a cartoon on Rosie O'Donnell for equating Christians with Islamic fundamentalists?

No, Hardaway didn't kill anyone. And he's not wearing a hood.
But his words mean the same thing. He was asked a direct question and he gave a direct answer during his interview. There was no hesitation. He didn't ponder the question, so therefore, his answer was exactly how he felt about the subject. If I said that same thing in the wrong mixed company, I might find myself on the wrong side of an asskicking.
Hardaway's comments were about HATE people. That's what Drew is relaying here. It's comparison thinking on Drew's part. I'm just sorry that he didn't add a 4th picture that included Rush Limbaugh.
Well done Drew. Maybe you have some of these posters here wondering about their own beliefs a little more.

Tom,
No one is defending what Hardaway said. What everyone is so upset about is him being compared to a neurotic dictator and the KKK.
Do you agree with what he said and do you agree he should be put in the same category as the other 2??? I hate the Red Wings, does that make me another Hitler???

Drew,
There's nothing inherently wrong with the word “hate”. Part of loving all that is good and pure and right is hating all that is bad and corrupt and wrong. For instance, it is a good thing to “hate debilitating disease” or to “hate the ravages of poverty”. Hating people, on the other hand, is wrong, and Mr. Hardaway has made a fool out of himself. Perhaps the 4 letter word you should have used then is “fool”, although this word hardly suffices for a Hitler or a KKK pillar like Duke or Byrd. I agree with the oft-made point that Hardaway, while apparently a blithering idiot, doesn't belong in the same 'toon as Adolf or the Klan.

Hate is hate, any way you slice it.
It was the tone in which Hardaway said the things he said. He didn't even take time to consider his words or how people might take them. And really....how else could anyone take them.
I hope he never has the chance to speak on a public stage again.
And I never said he was Hitler or the KKK. I am stating that hate is hate. And Hardaway is a disgusting excuse for a human being.

Drew,
Your work is not only courageous in this current climate where it's o.k. to gaybash or hate gays, but it's accurate.
I read the sports section every day, and because of some of the research I'm involved in I know how homophobic the sports world is. In this I include both men's and women's sports.
Would it have been o.k. had Bill Hanzlik said on air that he hates African Americans? His life would have (rightly) been in danger.
I'll defend anyone's right to say what they believe but, like Drew, I'll also draw the necessary comparisons.
Your compassion toward the homosexual community was startling to see on the sports pages of my daily newspaper, and your cartoon was the best thing I've ever seen printed on those pages.
Thanks Drew.

Lol I got nothin' to say on this since it's all been said. I mean, sure he said he hates gay people but it ain't like hes goin' out killing them. Everyone throws out the hate word now-a-days, but not many of them mean it like Hitler meant with the Jew. Some people just use hate the way you sensitive type people use don't like. If I say I hate eating boiled potatoes, does that mean I'm as bad as Hitler too? I'm not gonna use the hate word, but I don't agree with gay marriages either. That shit is nasty lol
