Texas Two-step

drew0503toon.gif

Well, that was quick. The Nuggets playoffs are over. The grand experiment of Melo and A.I. seems all for naught and what, what will it take to get beyond round 1?

Parts of the game were more painful to watch than Brady Quinn's NFL draft day. It's really beyond my comprehension that people would actually pay to watch the Nuggets play that pathetically. And the Nuggets quick exit makes me wonder if George Karl is really the guy to do the job. I think that's a cartoon for another day. I really feel as if the Nuggets quit on him last night. They quit on everybody.

So now for me it's all about drawing cartoons about the Rockies. Talking about some pathetic fish to fry. Where's world cup soccer when I need it ? Oh, well...theres always Barry Bonds. Or golf. Now that's a funny sport.

As a longtime Broncos fan, I always feel ambivalent when the Spurs play the Nuggets. I want to support the Denver team, but I identify with my hometown team.

I became a Broncos and NFL fan when I lived in Aurora as a kid and the Broncos went to the Super Bowl in 1977. I was lucky enough to go to the AFC Championship game where Denver beat the Raiders to earn the Super Bowl berth. I even still have the ticket.

I didn't get into the NBA until I attended my first Spurs game in 1997. And as a graphic artist for the San Antonio Express-News, my job calls on me to follow the Spurs closely.

Today, when the Broncos are playing, I'll wear my Broncos jerseys/polo shirts/t-shirts/ball caps. When the Spurs are playing, I wear my Spurs shirts, etc.

I guess that the point here is that I have to say I feel for the Nuggets fans. It's hard to see your team lose. After the Spurs lackluster performance in Game 1, I thought the Nuggets had a chance to break the first-round jinx.

But take heart. The Spurs will probably see Horry and Finley retire this year, and Ginobili has slowed down a bit from his headlong play. The Spurs even asked him to sit out playing for his national team this summer.

A.I. is a lot more stable than he used to be, and Melo is growing up to be a star player. Your day will come.

In the meantime, you might want to tell your advertising folks to be careful about what ads go on what pages. I found it rather ironic that there was an ad on the Drew comic page that offers readers a "chance to play ball with Tony Parker," with a picture of Parker in his Spurs uniform. I'd call that adding insult to injury.

Keep up the good work, Drew. I'll keep checking for your toons. And our Sports desk rather enjoyed your Nene yarn and tree cartoons. We cover the hometown team, but we can laugh at it as well.

I'm glad the Spurs won as that means we won't be subjected to Smello Yello's mush mouthed gang banger wannabe blabbering on TV.

Also, we won't see Anti-Intelligence's perpetual drug induced blank stare during interviews.

For what the Nuggets pay these two clowns, they could require them to take diction lessons so they speak clearly on TV.

Carmelo Anthony will NEVER win an NBA title. Just like Iverson will NEVER win an NBA title. Just like Kenyon Martin will NEVER win an NBA title.
NBA titles are for players like Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, etc, etc....Classy guys who respected the game outright and will be remembered long after people like Iverson, Martin, and Anthony are gone from the NBA.
Carmelo will be traded within 3-4 years after he does yet another stupid thing like actually get caught with his own backpack full of dope or for beating the crap out of his wife. Watch for it.

Yeah Tom.....you're right. NBA titles are for guys like Dennis Rodman, Bill Lambier, Kobe Bryant, Ben Wallace, etc......etc.

    Here's a prediction:

Tom will never know what it is like to see HIS team win a championship. TO share that feeling with family and friends. The fact they lost again will just make it that much sweeter if or when they win one. Yes Tom, nothing is guaranteed in life.......not even a Nuggets championship. I tell you though, compared what we Nugs fans went through for little more than a decade........I'll take this any day of the year.

Go Broncos, Nuggets, Avs, and Rockies!!!!!!

Hmmm- Kinda contradicts your earlier posts of how you don't really have any teams to cheer for and that pro athletes are all overpaid children. I believe there was a post asking you who your teams were and you admittingly said that you had none (except maybe a hockey team......was it the Capitals???? Not sure).

But it does make sense now.....Denver, I guess the BANDWAGON travels right through Tom's yard.

Tom- there's is a movie right up your alley that I think you should rent......it's called "And the Band Played On". That movie says "Tom" in so many ways.

Just trying to stir the pot.....

    Teddy,
Have you actually seen "And The Band Played On?"
It's not about sports. It's about AIDS. Exactly what is your point? And please do enlighten the visitors of this forum about why you think that film says "Tom" in so many ways. I'm interested in the "ways" you are talking about. What are you driving at? Because if you are going the direction I suspect you're going, then you are a complete son of a bitch. You're going to make light of a disease as serious as AIDS on a public forum? Are you insane? Do you even know how many people DIE because of this disease every day? HUNDREDS! THOUSANDS!!!!! TENS OF THOUSANDS! JESUS, MAN. WHAT IS YOUR MALFUNCTION??????????
Are you reading me loud and clear, you bastard? I'd kick your ass but good if given two seconds with you in an empty room. Just give me that chance, you insensitive prick.

    Absolutely well done Tom.

Teddy is simply the clearest definition of ignorance. What Teddy seems to have missed here is that Tom is (and always has been) poking fun at the Nuggets, Avalanche, etc. He POKES FUN at them. He likes to stir things up. He ha not, however, ATTACKED someone in the way that Teddy has attacked Tom.

Teddy (surely either MJ or Jeremy in disguise) seems to have crossed a serious line here. It's one thing to rip on a team or player (Melo & Iverson actually have been tied to drug problems, and many NBA players have a reputation for being violent towards spouses, so Tom was simply theorizing that it wouldn't be surprising to read the news one day and see that one or both were found guilty of either kind of crime), but for you Teddy, to bring AIDS into the fold of a discussion of sports teams is unforgivable. Stop coming here Teddy, or MJ, or Jeremy or whatever your name is now. You have no place here. Personally, I enjoy Tom's humor and find his comments fun. He certainly keeps the discussions lively here. I applaude him for his response to Teddy. I would say the same thing and would love a chance to take my shot at Teddy in a dark alley as well for his insensitive remarks. It's apparent that Teddy knows nothing of AIDS or how it affects people's lives. Maybe you should finally graduate to 8th grade Teddy. Try READING up on the subject of AIDS. You might learn a thing or two about the worst epedemic to hit Planet Earth ever. There is a big difference between stirring the pot (Tom's department) and being a complete idiot (Teddy's).

    To Tom and all-

I apologize for my "sick" and obviously non-thought out statement. Both of you are right about that.

I have seen the movie and was no way intended to remark on the "Aids" side of things. Was just trying to get a reaction out of Tom and obviously did so in a very poor manner. In no way was I trying to make fun of Aids.......actaully didn't think about that part when I posted. VERY insensitive of me and I hope you both realize I was not intending to make light of that matter. Now that I re-read my post and both of your responses, I was in the wrong in the worst way. Please let me assure you that it was not intended to come across that way, but obviously is and was wrong to post that remark.

What was meant as a joke is actually a very wrong statement and I apologize to all who have read it.

I'll play it safe and just keep to sports and think my responses out more thouroughly than an 8th grader.

Ben, Tom.......I agree 100% with your responses and regret that you had to waste your time reading and responding to my wrongful post.

And for the record, this is not MJ or Jeremy posting under another name. I wouldn't want them to be blamed for something I did.

Apology accepted. Hopefully you have learned something from this. Hopefully we all have.

Let's just agree to disagree when it comes to Colorado sports teams.

I just rip on them for my own amusement and because it's fun to rip on overpaid people. And yes....I do like the San Antonio Spurs for their professional nature. They are, of course, overpaid just as the Nuggets are, but at least they are professional across the board. Even if they had never won a title, I would have to respect the team. Pop is a GREAT coach. Duncan, Parker, Finley, Horry, etc....are all solid citizens. They are good people. I have never read or heard a negative thing about them.
Yes, I am kind of a Capitals fan as I have followed the team for 22 years, but I am not a die-hard. I stopped really being a sports fan when it became too expensive and when players cared more about their own wallets that they did about those who put the money in those wallets. I have nothing but disdain for ignorance.
Fact is that Anthony & Iverson have been involved in some sketchy stuff, and I have no respect for anyone who gets away with crap like they have just because they happen to be rich and famous.

    That is all.
