Help pick 25 years of Drew

As I've told you in recent blogs... September will mark my 25th year at the Rocky Mountain News. I've been drawing five cartoons a week since 1982 which means I've drawn a lot of John Elways teeth. I've been getting great feedback from all of you about some of your favorites and want to encourage you to keep submitting them. We're planning a few more things to help celebrate 25 years and I'll update you when I know more.

Drew's cartoons of John Elway with those teeth were classic! Always made me happy on Tuesday mornings!

The real thing here is this....
The NBA needs a new face besides David Stern.
The league has been a disaster since Magic, Larry, Michael, Kareem, and company left the scene.
Most of America isn't interested in a bunch of gangbanger, tattooed, "bling-bling" idiot millionaires invading a national game.
These jokers aren't playing for the fans of the game. They play for contract money, period.
It's disgusting.
Great too Drew. The whistle should also be blowing up in Stern's face as well.

All good, a few great, but the one you drew after Darrell Kile's death....the one with the Cardinal laying a flower on the pitcher's mound.....that one drawing said more than any 1,000 word essay. If not your best work ever, certainly on the short list. Thank you for your starting our mornings with a smile.

Wow Drew! 25 years, congratulations!!! You are asking for the best/favorite cartoon for the quarter anniversary? Well first off I think it's going to be hard to top the Barry Bonds homerun astreisk with the steriod syringe. But you have always been able to get to that nugget of humor with the visual tied to the caption. Your body of work for a quarter century has been absolutly golden.
My all time favorite would have to be the caricature of me you did at Poudre High School during the Guest Artists' Workshiop, say 1990 or 1991-I still have the viedo tape of you doing my goofy face and drawing 3 hairs on the top of my head, great stuff Drew. All of us were laughing like fools!
My wife's favorite is the Larry Bird retirement cartoon of him ripping the "B" out of the middle of the NBA as he walked away.
Best of luck on another 25 years of "win, lose & Drew."
Your number one fan-

Drew: As a CSU alumnus, my favorite cartoon of yours is definitely "Just a walk in the park", which depicts Sonny Lubick walking a small CU Buffalo on a leash. This was published a few years ago, after CSU had beaten CU in the Rocky Mountain Showdown.

It is so hard to pick as there are so many great ones. Here are a few I like.
1. Dan Reeves giving a lady a contract when the baby kicks cause they needs a punter.
2.If Shadows could talk where Rozelle gives Davies the Super Bowl Trophey.
3. Elway in the old timers baseball game.
4. The guy watching the Doug Moe show and the wife thinks it is the Roadrunner show.
5. Elway looking into Sakic's bedroom and the Cup.
6. Plummer blaming Greise's Dog.
7. Hurdle boarding up the Rockies bullpen.
I hope you have another great 25 years!

I moved here in '84 and have been reading the RMN ever since.
While there have been many great 'toons over the years the one that I always remember (and I honestly don't know why) is the one of Rich Karlis staring at the goal post with multiple uprights. Rich had a string of near misses in the previous weeks and it just seemed to strike a chord with me.
Keep up the great work and Happy 25th Anniversary.

Drew, there all great, but one of our most favorites is one not everyone had the chance to see. It is about a #50th Anniversary.
Keep up the good work, we love you.

My favorite cartoon ever was the one where Elway is in Marty Shottenheimer's bathroom mirror sticking out his tongue the morning after we beat the Chiefs to go to the AFC championship. Number 2 would be the cartoon after we won our first Super Bowl with all of the great QBs carrying Elway off the field. Also I liked last years when you made Shottenheimer look like Charlie Brown attempting to kick the football with Lucy pulling it away. I also like the one when you depicted the Avalanche as marshmallows rolling over the Vancouver Canucks in '96 after their coach called us marshmallows.

Well Drew, I can honestly say that I began following your toons when I was in High Shcool in 1986. And continue to follow today from Abq NM. My favorite was the one in the mid 80s that depicted a cornhusker and a sooneer inside a house and a buffalo at the front door with the cornhusker saying to the sooner "The doormat is alive". I would say that toon was pretty accurate in its prediction. I had that posted on my wall next to my bed until I graduted in 1988.

Congratulations Drew!!
Unfortunately, I cannot remember most of the cartoons until someone or some event triggers my memory.
However, the most memorable cartoon for me is, and will always be, the one of Elway looking into Sakic's bedroom at the Stanley Cup...
As for a recent event that jogged my memory: Nolan Ryan laying a spankin' on Robin Ventura, compliments of the Jose Offerman incident.

I know the bulk of your work
is humorous, & you have LOTS of GREAT ones!
I believe a lot of your BEST
work includes the "serious"
ones - like the one of Ben Crenshaw after his beloved teacher (Harvey Penick)
had just passed away.
I hope you'll include some of those.

I have enjoyed your cartoons for years. The quality and simplicity of your work is a great mix. My favorite was drawn I believe in 1986. You drew Ralphie and a doormat after CU defeated NU and said CU wasn't the Big 8 doormat anymore. Tha cartoon appeared with several others you drew in a RMN sponsored schedule for the 1987 season.

Here are some of my favorites.
- Right after the Av's first Stanley Cup win: John Elway outside Joe Sakic's window, peeking in longingly at the Stanley Cup.
- Terrell Davis running into the sunset, carrying a horse high over his head, representing the Bronco's and the horse is saying, "It really has been a remarkable ride"
- Building burning with "Rockies Baseball" on the front, a fire truck in pulls up that says "Bronco's Training Camp" and fans all over it, one saying "Whew, just in time!"
- Two guys singing "Those Were The Days My Friend", looking at posters of John Elway and Patrick Roy
- Patrick Roy in the Florida Panther's playoff series- four different scenes with a drawbridge door in front of the goal closing tighter and tighter with each game, until it was completely shut on game four.
- So many great cartoons during the Avalanche playoffs! Several cartoons about late-night Avalanche playoff games, over time games. They said it all!
Some of the most memorable cartoons weren't meant to convey humor, but were a heart-touching comment on current events, such as:
- With Jack Elway's passing, the movie projector showing "My All Time Favorite Game Film" that showed Jack playing football with John in the front yard.
- Right after 9/11, a cartoon with a field goal kicker and holder on the field about ready to kick the ball. The goal posts are two flags at half-mast, and the player is saying "I just don't feel right about this". That's how we felt.
- The Brian Griese legacy in Denver - Judi's House to support grieving children. Nice one. That helps put things in perspective.
Great job, Drew - your cartoons really capture our thoughts well! I've loved them through all the years.

I had a chance to meet you at Tattered Cover during your program on the John Elway cartoon book. It was a memorable evening as you described the way you develop cartoons. Many great comments attached here and well deserved.
Your cartoons jump start my morning. The one that gave me the biggest laugh was Nick van Exell with headband in the boxing ring with Mike Tyson. I believe the tilte was "A good reason to allow boxing in Colorado"
I look forward to many more years of your work. Congratulations on #25.
