Drew: Bowl Season

It's that magical time of year when we are inundated with insipid bowl games sporting ridiculous corporate names that nobody really cares about but for some strange reason that defies all human logic we seem to watch regardless. And every year there are more and more and more of them. Which is why, in our lifetimes, we will never see a college playoff system. Now pass the potato chips.

Drew - I'm going to make a little prediction. Within the next 5 years we're going to see on the field advertising. Instead of the team name in the endzone, you're going to see "Federal Express" written there. I would go so far as to also predict that you'll see advertising on players jerseys and/or helmets too. It's money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, and uh....money.

Not many years ago, the Major League Baseball Most Valuable Player Award was sponsored by....**cough**...Viagra.

    (Insert your own joke here.)

Will the Heisman eventually become a sponsored trophy?

Will there be a Bowl game sponsored by something as strange as Ex-Lax? Trojan? Charmin? Weed-B-Gone?

I'm not quite willing to bet against anything in today's money grubbing corporatized world.

Below are some names for Bowl Games from past years. The names are almost unbelievable. Almost....Cheers.

    - San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.
    - R & L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.
    - Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl.
    - Papajohns.com Bowl.
    - Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl.
    - AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
    - Meineke Car Care Bowl.
    - Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl.
    - Roady's Humanitarian Bowl.
    - Chik-fil-A Bowl.
    - GMAC Bowl.
    - Capitol One Bowl.
    - Petrosun Independence Bowl.
    - Pacific Life Holiday Bowl.
    - The Sports Bowl.
    - The Konica Minolta Gator Bowl.
    - The Outback Steakhouse Outback Bowl.

I have got to say the best name for a bowl came from the 90's. The Poulan Weed-Eater Independence Bowl. The Weed-Eater Bowl! How can you not get excited for that one?

Advertising on unis is not a unique concept. Watch any club level soccer game played anywhere but the US or Canada. All teams are "sponsored" by major advertisers - including Budweiser, Walmart, Pirelli, Guiness, LG, Sony- the list of MNCs goes on. That doesnt take into account the back of the jersey.

Even here in the states, we accept that brands are advertised on uniforms.

What is wrong with a business (sports) finding other avenues to make money that they can than use to pay the players and keep ticket prices reasonable (somewhat?)
