Drew Litton: Nuggets Dance

The Nuggets let the trade deadline pass without much fanfare. Too bad. They could use some help to make a decent run in the playoffs. I remembered the old quote by Darrell Royal which seemed to fit for the image. But there is good news...at least they didn't end up with Ron Artest.

Ron Artest would have been an upgrade over what they have now. People can talk about Artest's behavior problems all you want, but he's been as close to a model citizen as there is since his daughter was diagnosed with cancer. He's obviously has had an awakening of sorts, and he hasn't punched anyone out lately (something that cannot be said for Carmelo Anthony), so let's just calm down. Anthony's punch and backpedal deal was more recent than Artest's rampage in Detroit. I'm not forgiving Artest for his past actions, but he could have made an impact for a franchise that needs an impact. Any impact. Even Artest.
The Nuggets are a doomed franchise because they want to be married to players like Kleiza. Kleiza is a nice role player, but is also a guy who will likely be a career bench guy. Every NBA team has two of him on their roster. The Nuggets are screwed because they have far too much money tied up in Anthony, Iverson, Martin & Nene. martin and Nene are dead weight dollars on the salary cap. Anthony cannot seem to get his head around the fact that he needs to assert himself defensively. he doesn't like to defend and therefore he refuses to defend. He's a primadonna and always will be. No coach will change Anthony's ways because Anthony will not ever allow a coach to coach him. He's an individual player. He's concerned about scoring points and making ESPN highlight reels and being voted into the All-Star game by delusional fans. Anthony was lobbying for the Nuggets to get him a person to play defense for him because he wanted no part of that act.
The Nuggets are a failed franchise. That's not very likely to change any time soon, if ever.

Some thoughts:
1. It's nice to hear Tom have some nice thoughts on a pro athlete (not being sarcastic), particularly one who has seemed to turn himself around, whether the media admits it or not.
2. I disagree that LK is something every team has 2 or 3 of on their bench. If he was, every team calling the Nuggets wouldn't have wanted him. He's a 23-year-old , capable of playing the 2 3 or 4, and with a burgeoning offensive game. I think his upside is a more athletic Peja, downside is a career like Hedo, both of whom have had good NBA careers.
3. Melo is a below average defender. Other than that, I disagree with your assessment.
If you watched the Celtics game, down the stretch you saw Melo twice draw a double, and kick it out to wings, once to Camby to shoot a 3. Why? Because his teammates had a better shot and thus his team had a better chance of winning. Seriously, watch him when he's on the bench, there's not a more involved teammate, more passionate about winning. He takes bad shots because he thinks he's the best bet. With the exception of Camby, he's our best/most aggressive offensive rebounder.
This is a kid who carried Syracuse to a national title, with only one other NBA player on the roster, has taken the Nuggets to the playoffs in a loaded conference in each of his 4 years, including his rookie year when most pundits had the Nuggets as 12th or 13th in the West. They haven't made it out of the first round yet but how long did it take KG? 10 years?
4. KMart is tremendously overpaid but watch the games and you'll see there is not a better defensive 4 out there right now. The defensive weakness comes from poor wing defense and mental breakdowns. But in the half-court offense, KMart has been tremendous since late December defensively (and offensively is looking better and better by the game).

Tom,
You would have complained no matter what they would have done. Even if they had gotten Artest. You complain about every single thing that every team in town does. I guess you're just a glass-half-empty kinda guy.
I would have liked to have seen them get Artest, also. They need a big guard who can rebound and defend. The Nuggets give up way too many second chance points and the guards rely too heavily on Camby to help on penetration. Fact is, however, they didn't get him. So now we have to root for the existing team. All this complaining does nothing positive. Melo is a better defender than given credit, Martin is approaching 100%, Camby is lights out on the boards and the defensive end, Kleiza gives quality minutes every night, Najera hustles, Smith is finally starting to come around, Nene may be back. The biggest problem I see is Iverson dribbles and shoots way too much, but his assists are also going up. This team has a lot going for it. Let's get behind them. Denver is a great sports city, not a bunch of fair-weather fans.
GO NUGGETS!!!

Actually, that's not true. I only find fault with the Nuggets about 93.7% of the time.
Yes, I rip on the team. If Anthony would actually care about team play, I might decide to give him the benefit of the doubt from time to time.
My take is this...
Pay me 1/10th of what he makes per season, and I guarantee I will run my tail off for 40 minutes and will use every foul I have in my pocket to benefit the team.
Anthony gets called for lazy fouls. He gets called for offensive fouls as he constantly is hooking his defender with his free hand/arm. If I were his coach, I'd bench him for the remainder of the game every time he did that until he got the message. If you can't beat a guy one on one unless you cheat to do it, then you have no business playing.
It's Anthony's approach to the game and how he thinks he's often above it that doesn't sit well with me.
He hasn't grown up after 4 years in the NBA. I doubt he will at this point. If he played this way under Pop in San Antonio, he'd have been traded away long ago.
