You can use that same exact toon with the Avs in the coming days. I really thought they would put up a better fight with Detroit. Guess I was wrong.

    Red-

I agree, except at least the AVS won a series as a lower seed.

The Wings are just a better team.

Drew- not good times in the Mile High sports landscape.

Drew, I think you need to think about a toon where a winged wheel is running down avalanche players like roadkill.

I can't even believe that there were people who were seriously considering that the Avs had a chance to even win one game in this series, much less the series itself.

The Avs are old, slow, and uninspired. Signing Forsberg was the nail in the Avalanche's coffin. He's completely useless. And I think Sakic really needs to consider hanging up his skates at this point. Sure, he scored 100 points a couple of seasons back, but he has taken a dramatic step backward. It would be nice to see Sakic retire with some dignity instead of stringing out his career on a club that is going nowhere fast. The Avalanche need a rebuild. Stan Kronke needs to admit that. In fact, both of his franchises need rebuilds. Now, it's just a matter of Kronke and Company doing something about it.

The chances of Kronke admitting that his empire is in troble is about as likely as gas prices dipping below 2 bucks a gallon ever again. Not very likely.

    Sad.

the avs never had a chance, detroit was better to start off with but in every game this series the avs have had one player missing before the game and one player get hurt during the game. statsny, theodore, forsberg, wolski, hannan, smyth, and foote have all gone down with injuries. that's 7 of their top 13 players that have been hurt. the avs got hit with miserable luck at the worst possible time.

What goes around, comes around. There have been many, many seasons where the Avs have been the healthy team and have benefited from their opposition being a M*A*S*H unit. I don't feel sorry for Colorado. It's just their time to play the walking wounded.
The time of the Avalanche is over. Time to shake it up, tear it down, and deal with L.A.S.A.F

    Life After Sakic And Forsberg.

Nail on the head Penfold. It is time for the Avalanche to move on. They tried to rekindle the old magic by bringing in the old warriors, but it didn't work.
With all respect to Joe Sakic, I think he needs to step away this off-season and seriously mull retirement. This will of course not go over well with Avs fans, but reality is reality.

I was never really high on getting Forsberg back to begin with. His time here has come and gone. (Then again, perhaps the same could be said about his NHL career since he is basically the Roger Clemens of the NHL.)

I don't think that many really thought the Avs were going to have a chance in this series. They are completely outclassed in all categories. I hate admitting that about the Wings.

I wasn't afraid of Minnesota at all. They had the same number of wins, they just played OT 3 more times. The regular season dominance from the Wild did not start until the Avs lost several key players at one time long term. (The Avs started the Season series 2-1.)

The Redwings however have frankly whipped on the Avs since the lockout, and the regular season record against the Wings was not impressive against them before that. Joel Quenneville has had a dismal record against them as well even when St. Louis was an elite team. Not exactly a match made in heaven if you want to beat the Redwings.

.....and it's not going to get easier to beat the Wings in coming seasons either.

The Wings already have replacements in place for their aging players (Franzen, Fippula, etc.)

They still have Lidstrom, who appears likely to play into his 40's. Chelios, even being old enough to be a grandfather, is still extremely effective. Osgood is still good enough to be a #1 goalie.

The Wings were the smart team when the lockout hit. They hadn't overpaid for any of their players. The players they did have signed reasonable deals to keep the core of the team together. It's hard to find franchises where being on a TEAM is more important than the extra million on your contract. Players in Detroit simply want to play there and sign for less than they could to keep playing on a team that has year-in and year-out success.
The Avs, because of overpaying for players like Theodore, and for not being salary cap savvy prior to the lockout, are now paying the price by staring a potential 4-5 year rebuild square in the eyes.
It's going to take a long time for the Avalanche to be true contenders again. The Wings, among a great many other teams, have moved ahead of Colorado. The Avs would be smart to play the young guys, get rid of the old and ineffective (i.e. trade Hejduk, Lappy, Brunette, etc...while they have at least some value, and allow Sakic to retire gracefully), and rebuild through the draft.

Of course, that will only happen of they're smart, which it appears, they are not.

gotta love it when people rip a team for picking up a player before the lockout that they never even had. penfold, you can talk and pretend that you know something about hockey when you get the avs' personnel right. theodore came after the lockout, but hey, what do i know? your team was apparently the only one that planned for an unforeseen worst case scenario event

    Jacob -

Do you actually read posts before you comment on them???

    My post clearly says:

"The Avs, because of overpaying for players like Theodore, AND for not being salary cap savvy prior to the lockout, are now paying the price by staring a potential 4-5 year rebuild square in the eyes."

Note the word I capitalized for your benefit.

    "AND"

That means that I'm pointing out that picking up Theodore....AND....not working the salary cap correctly contributed to the Avalanche not being successful. The two events I pointed out are entirely seperate things. If you could read, then you'd understand that.

Try R-E-A-D-I-N-G posts before you spend time ripping on posts. It'll make you look far more intelligent.
