Drew Cartoon: Joe Sakic's Decision Process

DREW0711.gif

Joe Sakic is at the crossroads, trying to decide if it's time to hang up the skates or not. Tough choice. Once an athlete walks away from the game there is usually no turning back. The crowds cease. The camaraderie of teammates is gone and the game you spent playing your entire life is over. And you're still in your 30's with your whole life in front of you. I'm hoping Joe comes back for another year, but if he doesn't what a pleasure it's been to watch a talented humble hockey player give his all to one franchise and the cities of Quebec and Denver for all these years.

I don't care if it's this year or next year, but I will be so very happy when Joe is finally gone for good. Why? Not because I don't think he's a fine hockey player, but rather so I can sit back and watch Avalanche fans go absolutely nutty. I can hear them now.
    "Wahhhhhh!"
    "Whut...whut...whut...arrreee weeee gunnn-na doooo wi...wi...with-owt Ju...Ju...Joe???????????"
    "Aiiiieeeeaaarrrggghhh!!!"
It's going to be good times watching the Avalanche become an also-ran team in the new NHL. The team and it's fanbase will be able to watch while teams like Washington, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Minnesota, Montreal, San Jose, and Detroit rule the NHL. The Avalanche had their time while they bought Cups. These teams I've mentioned drafted well and scouted well, which is why they are where they are. They didn't have to buy players. Maybe in 20 years the Avs might worm their way back to the upper echelon of the NHL, but don't bank on it.
    Hahahaahahahahaaaaa!!!!!

Joe Sakic is one of those rare heros who never let his success go to his head. He stayed with the same franchise his entire career even throught the move and acceptance of Denver. With 600 goals and 2 cups he has earned the right to take his time.
compare Joe to the wing fan above who has no life outside of his wannabe jersey.

Sakic is awesome. No getting around that. Hopefully he will come back but if he doesn't he will go out as one of the greatest athletes to lace it up for Denver, sitting up there with Elway and Roy.

I think it's funny how ignorant people say the Avs bought their teams. Anyone with any hockey sense would know that Sakic, Forsberg, Foote, Drury, Tanguay, Hejduk, Deadmarsh, Kamensky, and a host of others were drafted by the Avalanche. And thereby, the Avs continued to pay their drafted players.

Sure, the Avs have a history of trading for and signing big-name players like Roy, Bourque and Blake, but so do the Red Wings.

How much is Hossa being paid by the Wings to play this year?

I could go on and on about this (like Detori spending like the Avs to get players like Shanahan, Hasek, Hull), but I won't.

And remind me how well Minnesota did against the Avs last year, and how in the world the Wild (and Chicago, for that matter) can be mentioned in the same class as Detroit.

Ignoramuses like "WorkingClassHero" make reading message boards vomitous.

    Blech.

There is only one WorkingClassHero. That's me. I coined the handle on this blog, so it would be much appreciated if you'd refrain from trying to confuse people. It's not good form.
It's okay if none of you like me, because i don't actually care. All I want to do is sit back while you self-indulgent, spoiled-rotten Denverites go into a spin when Sakic hangs them up. It's going to be a great, great day. First Elway. Then Roy (although he was never an Avalanche. He'll always be a Hab.)Now Sakic (not to mention Forsberg.)
So stick it. I'll just keep on loving the fact that Father Time is on my side, and Sakic will be gone very soon. There's not thing one you can do about it.

WCH... seriously? Only a fool would think losing one of the last remaining true class athletes is a good thing, all so you can watch the fans go nutty.

OF COURSE we're going to go nutty, Sakic is a once in a lifetime athlete along the lines of Yzerman and Lidstrom. He's irreplaceable.

WCH, your ignorance is laughable. Washington, Pittsburgh, and Chicago are young and good because they all were awful, and drafted early for something like, four or five years. Of course they’re good! Minnesota, can’t get to the conference finals, as can’t Montreal, and San Jose. Detroit however is just flat out amazing, and you know what, the NHL needs a Detroit like MLB needs the Yankees and Red Sox. So WCH, stop making dumb statements for the sake of stirring up controversy, and at least know just a little bit of what you’re talking about before spewing out crap.

Honestly, I don’t get the Favre-Sakic comparisons. Sakic hasn’t retired, or talked retirement until this year. Two years ago the guy accumulated 100 points, and signed the day after the season ended, so why the comparisons?

Sakic is the model athlete, has been a phenomenal captain and leader, and deserves the time he’s taking.

BTW, Hossa is making 7.4 mil for one year with the Wings… oh, and he was drafted by the Senators.

Laughable is a great way to categorize idiots such as WCH. Sports fan he is not, rabble rouser and stink pot stirrer is a more apt label. Sakic is and always has been, a true hero, not just for his incomparable hockey exploits, but also his model citizenry and community involvement. Refreshing in an era where Bonds and Pacman and Travis Henry and Brandon Marshall get more ink. Cheers to Super Joe, and whatever he decides, we have been truly fortunate to have him here to wear the Av's sweater.

Sakic is Avalanche Hockey, always will be. I am a colorado native am a loyal Raiders and Avalanche always will be. When Elway retired I had respect for the man he won his superbowls and went out on top. Players like Roy and Sakic don't need to win the cups. Their names are on there already, and they will always be notorious for their positions. They are true sports heros, ones that play the game for the game, not stats or money.
As far as buying cups, now a days everyone goes were they "THINK" they can win. Money talks, and Sakic and Roy knew they wer going to win here. 12 going on 13 years in the league and they have only missed the playoffs once quit a feet with salary caps . So ponder that.....
