A plan for Iraq
Congress should allow only enough funds for the new troops and the Iraq war until Sept. 11, giving
Bush and Iraq
Leonard Muniz
The Democrat controlled Congress could do that Leonard, but they will not. It would be political suicide for the 2008 Presidential election. The liberal Dems also do not have the courage of their convictions. They love to toss bombs from the cheap seats and slam each and every plan that the GOP and the President brings forth. That is there MO. They will continue to pass meaningless resolutions and harp and cry about the Iraq
Campaign, but they are too cowardly to back up their rhetoric with any type of meaningful action. And Leonard, please tell me how running away and allowing Iraq, and the region, to descend into total chaos is a "plan"? We tried that once before. SE Asia, 1975, the Dem controlled Congress puilled all monetary and equipment support from S Vietnam, per our agreement to do so if the north invaded. They hung Pres Ford out to dry. 2 MILLION people died in the Killing Fields in the years that followed.
First off, Michael, lets disspell with the myth that the war in Iraq is/was necessary. This was Bush's little vendetta war, pure and simple. Intelligence reports were manipulated to convince Congress to go to war in Iraq regardless of the consequences. You want to find fault with the Democrats now when any RATIONAL person with military experience can tell you Iraq is now a loose/loose situation. There was a specific reason Bush 1 didn't go into Baghdad during Gulf War 1. As bad as Saddam was, eliminating him would have been worse as we all know that to be true now.
Second, you need to go back to school and relearn your history. Read the Paris Peace Accords. By the way, the "killing fields" were in Cambodia, not Vietnam. But don't let that fact ruin a perfectly good rant.
I say we hold a referendum on the war, then the government can do what the people say.
Oh, and Michael, the "big fear" of domino effect was proven to be wrong, which was the prime reason for staying in the war, remember.
As for that little Tonkin farce, can you say "bogus"?
Webneck - We do not hold "referendums" on issues of foreign policy, defense, and national security. Thank God for that. The Executive Branch of govt is solely responsible for that, as we are a republic, not a democracy. The primary reason we were in Vietnam can be found in JFKs 1961 inaugural address - read it if you have a minute. That is when Democrats still had a pair and a backbone too.
