Jimmy Carter
Friday, January 19 at 5:00 PM

After I called (in your letters pages) Jimmy Carter the greatest living American, I was rebutted by a snooty letter in those same pages and by an anonymous postcard ("Jack - you’re an idiot") to my home. The shock of the latter was somewhat ameliorated by the fun photo of the leggy Puma model on the obverse.
Take your pick whether Carter is or ain’t the greatest living American, but I’ll say one thing without rebuttal: Carter was the closest thing to a Christian, that is, what Jesus might call a Christian, to be president in the twentieth century.

Sorry Jack:

But Carter revises history ignoring that the Jews attempted to abide by the 1948 UN Treaty while the Arabs began the cycle of violence by attempting to crush Israel. Combined with the recent relevations that Carter interceded on behalf of SS death guards to prevent their being deported in the 1980's and the indication is that he is more anti semitic than Christian.

Jimmy Carter may indeed be a very good Christian man. I don't know - and I don't care. If he wanted to be a minister or a monk or a missionary, than that is what he should have been. But as President of the United States he was an abject failure. "Turn the other cheek" may be the way to lead an indivudual Christian life, but it is NOT a basis for a strong US foreign policy or a national defense strategy. As for the double digit inflation/unemployment/interest rates that Carter presided over - this country was a mess. I was there and I lived it. Thank God America woke up and elected Ronald Reagan in 1980.
