English is our tongue
I may be a Republican, but I totally agree with Democratic Sen. Chris Romer calling for students to be proficient in the English language before they graduate from high school (“English-proficiency bill ripped by Dems,” Feb. 1).
The Democrats say it would cost too much and the money would have to be shifted from scarce resources. I disagree.
What is wrong here? Are we not in America? English is our language.
Robert J. Burger, Fort Collins
It's mind boggling that an american high school would graduate individuals can't read, speak or write in English.
The fact that we have a very diverse society only makes it that much more important to be proficient in a common language. After all, the citizens of a country need to be able to communicate with each other.
Posted by Thom Challenger on February 28, 2007 02:31 AMdo any of you actually think any politician cares whether illegals can read or write or speak english ?
Posted by Frank on February 28, 2007 03:32 AMIt's important that all "United States Citizens" speak and understand English if only for their own safety. Nobody mentioned "illegals" Frank, but I agree with you that it probably doesn't matter to our politicians if foreigners (legal or not) in America can speak and write in English.
Posted by Harry on February 28, 2007 05:59 AMWhat do you mean it would cost too much? Aren't we (taxpayers) paying for the education of our children? Doesn't this include being proficient in the national language?
What are the politicians going to do when the electorate can't read the ballots to vote for them or their pet projects?
Posted by on February 28, 2007 09:21 AMWhat are the politicians going to do? Get real. What they've been doing for years anyway...vote for what THEY or, in reality, what their big contributors, want. The peons, (us), don't matter.
Posted by Rick on February 28, 2007 09:42 AMDon't you mean peed-ons?
Posted by grind on February 28, 2007 10:09 AMYo Frank: If you include your email I could let you know about your English without bringing it to the attention of the world. At any rate: Begin your sentence with a capital letter and capitalize "english," to wit: English. Sorry 'ol chap. r22037@yahoo
Posted by Richard Grimes on February 28, 2007 10:32 AMThe politicians want to divide and conquer the middle class of America, so they can send all that wealth out to the rest of the world via the UN. It is easier to defeat a divided group (nation) of people than a unified one. United we stand, divided we fall. Quite simple isn't it. Everyone needs to do whatever it takes to unify the people of the United States, and defend the Constitution from those who are bent on destroying it along with our rights. I think that requiring all students to be proficient at reading, writing, and speaking English is a start.
Posted by Jay on February 28, 2007 11:28 AMBut Jay, where will they get the money for it? Amendment 27 was for salaries not teaching.
Posted by on February 28, 2007 11:42 AMRichard,
You seem to enjoy getting off subject and correcting others' posts. I would like to point out that your e-mail address should have a ".com" following it.
Posted by on February 28, 2007 12:18 PMIt costs much more to teach in two languages than one, duh.
