Miniature golf course
John Wren of Denver writes:
What an outrageous way to spend city funds! What is the justification for this? Government should do for us what we cannot do for ourselves, public safety, health, education, transportation needs. What’s next, a circus?
The Mayor needs to be replaced in the May elections, and we need fresh faces to serve on the City Council.

Actually, Denver is finally entering the new era of revenue-generating recreation. The Hyland Hills Recreation District is the model for many. Not only does the Recreation District own and operate Water World, the revenues generated from that enterprise have generated revenue that has permitted the recreation district to construct and operate a number of other facilities including two Adventure Golf Courses and an ice skating facility, to name just three. It also puts the lie to the old maxim that government cannot compete or operate such facilities at a profit.
City planner and visionary, S. R. DeBoer proposed in the last century that Denver explore the possibility of opening water parks in old gravel pits. Kudos to Denver and the City Council for recognizing that there is a place for recreational revenue-generation right here in the city of Denver. I can hardly wait to take my kids to the new gold course as soon as it opens! Now, I'm waiting for Denver's entry into the water park category -- better late than never!
Posted by P.K. Pritzel on February 27, 2007 06:01 PMgovernment should only provide what was mentioned by the letter writer!
they have no business anything for profit , and cannot be trusted to be honest with things such as building businesses up and running them as the sole proprietor
Posted by Frank on February 28, 2007 03:47 AMPK do you happen to have the financial statement for Hyland Hills that we could look at to see just how much profit there is in a government run facility? I have a feeling that they get a lot of tax dollars just like any rec district. All of their services are below market price and made that way becasue of the unlimited tax money they get.
Just remember this is the same city that had to hire private contractors to do snow removal, made huge piles of snow at Coors field only to find out they had to move them, as their planning didnt include checking to see if the parking lots were needed.
Denver's mayor is a total dunce. He should be replaced.
Posted by Floyd Hill on February 28, 2007 05:50 AMNext thing we'll find out is the Mayor has hired Michael Jackson as head of the recreation department and Denver will change it's name to Neverland.
Posted by on February 28, 2007 07:07 AMand yet we can't find funds for snow removal equipment???
Posted by fiesty on February 28, 2007 07:12 AMOr money to teach our children proper English.
Posted by on February 28, 2007 09:26 AMTax private business out of business, then replace it with tax supported government owned business. Sounds like communism to me.
Posted by grind on February 28, 2007 10:14 AMGrind is on the right track. And $1.7 million would go a long way towards snow removal as mentioned by Fiesty, not to mention pot-hole repair.
