Why burden Lafayette taxpayers?
Friday, February 2 at 11:46 PM

The upcoming vote in the city of Lafayette on Issue A is not on whether or not the owners of the property can sell to Lowe’s. The election is not an attempt to infringe on the right of the owners of the property to sell to a legitimate buyer of their choosing.
Lowe’s, as a potential buyer, has indicated it is only interested in the property if the property’s current status changes and it is annexed into the city.
Property owners have the right to sell to whomever they want. They do not, however, have a right to have the rest of us underwrite (through our taxes) an annexation to make it attractive to a particular buyer.
What Lafayette will lose if it annexes this land it will never be able to get back. Why sell off the priceless for so paltry a return? A buffer between our hometown and the limitless sprawl on the other side of the buffer is reason enough to protect this space. Truly, enough is enough!
Vote no on Issue A.

Becky O’Brien, Lafayette
