GOP sheep won’t bleat over Coulter’s slur
Monday, March 19 at 12:00 AM

In 2003, Dixie Chicks singer Natalie Maines told a concert audience that she was ashamed that President Bush hailed from her home state of Texas.
Conservatives responded to this very innocuous remark by rabidly boycotting the band’s concerts and records and demanding that radio stations not play their songs.
Unless conservatives are nothing less than self-serving hypocrites, they will now do the same to Ann Coulter.
Coulter, obviously unable to speak intelligently about Edwards’ qualifications, instead resorted to personally attacking John Edwards with a offensive and derogatory slur.
If conservatives have any integrity they should demand that major bookstores stop selling her books.
They should boycott her appearances and refuse to support any candidate or cause that hires her services.
Of course, I know this will never happen because “do as we say, not as we do, let them eat cake” conservatives will ignore Coulter’s latest shameless act of self-gratifying provocation with their usual sheepish fervor.
Instead, they will, as always, blithely follow the treacherous wolves that lead them toward their own demise, bleating their support for them all the while.

Thomas Mannion, Denver

READER COMMENTS

Oviously the writer of the letter is an ignornat lefty tool - ans as such completely ignores the blog responses that were issued about coulter's slur.

RightWingNews blogger John Hawkins, a longtime Coulter fan, writes: " What's on tap for next year? Will she drop the N-bomb? Will she use the C-word to describe Hillary Clinton? Whatever her plans are, after being burned twice in a row, CPAC shouldn't invite her back next year."

Michelle Malkin - certainly no liberal favorite immidieatly repudiated her eon her blog ". We expect CPAC to be a place where conservative role models speak with clarity, passion, and integrity. There are enough spewers of mindless filth, vulgarity, and hatred on TV, at the movies, and in the public schools."

Likewise Guiliani and other Republicans at the CPAC conference immediately criticised her for that statement.

A simple google would have dredged these up for you and many others.

How about simply looking at CPAC itself? Here you go (from their open letter):

Coulter’s vicious word choice tells the world she care little about the feelings of a large group that often feels marginalized and despised. The legendary conservative thinker Richard Weaver wrote a book entitled Ideas Have Consequences. Rush Limbaugh has said again and again that “words mean things.” Both phrases apply to Coulter’s awful remarks. Denouncing Coulter is not enough. What example is set when one highlight of the conference is finding out what shocking phrase will emerge from Ann Coulter’s mouth? How can we teach young conservatives to fight for their principles with civility and respect when Ann Coulter is allowed to address the conference? Coulter’s invective is a sign of weak thinking and unprincipled politicking. ... CPAC speaking invitations no longer be extended to Ann Coulter.

Mr Mannion, Its a shame you knee-jerk hate-filled leftist idealogues can never think for yourself outside of the moronic charicatures that you have of othere. Stereotypes that you force others into and blindly use yourself. Wake up and grow up.

Posted by Corrector on March 19, 2007 01:08 AM

The ultra right and ultra left both do a disservice to their respective parties when they stoop to vicious smears of the 'other side' - as Corrector has just done. Do you really think that those of us who were outraged by this hate-filled hussy's latest bomb are all "ignornat (your spelling not mine - I highly recommend a spelling checker for your whole tirade) lefty tool"s when you have listed a number of members of the right who were offended by this (but not by Coulter's denunciation of the widows of 9/11 victims who were pushing for more information about whether that tragedy could have been prevented). Corrector could have stopped after listing those members of the right who have had the guts to denounce Coulter's latest 'witticism' (her apology was that it was only a joke), instead chose to spew venom of his/her own - which leads me to believe Corrector is "knee-jerk hate-filled rightist idealogue (who) can never think for yourself outside of the moronic charicatures that you have of othere."

I think it is unfortunate to compare the Dixie Chicks honest feelings about George Bush to Coulter's slur of Edwards. Edwards is a married man whose wife is a cancer survivor and there is no evidence what so ever that Edwards leads the double life of a Ted Haggard. Coulter used her time at CPAC to spew lies and was rewarded with applause and more book sales.

Corrector is a joke to pretend that the "evil" left wing bloggers are on a par with Coulter. The reich wing always tries to absolve their own by attempting to justify it with equivalent comparisons. "But but the liberals also do it" is the favorite mantra of conservatives when caught in immoral acts. Never mind that they constantly pretend that they are morally superior people who uphold the highest of family values and integrity. Lying is so common among their ranks that they don't even try to make factual statements anymore. That's why they are so puzzled by the conviction of Lewis Libby for making false statements. They have no idea why what he did was wrong.

Hey what ever happened to free speech? Seems that was the most popular phase used after the chicks made their statement.
Hey wes marriage doesnt mean a thing if you looked at a past NJ mayor who had kids and now wants them. They had no idea he led a double life till he told everyone.
Ah such is life.
every one please have a lovely day and dont get your shorts up in a twist over nothing.

Coulter's remark is a old news, and not that big of a deal. She is just tired of the PC nonsense that is running it's course, and she is trying to help it die a swifter death. I thought it was ballsy word play against the PC madness present in everyday American life.

Thomas - Get a grip. As a GOPer and ardent conservative I am not amused when one of our own decides to get down in the mud and act like a left wing idiot and slurmeister like Randi Rhodes, Al Franken, or any MoveOn blogger - or John Edwards campaign worker. I like Ann Coulter and generally am amused and like her tone - BUT, that said, she can be a bomb thrower and she wants to sell books.
I do not approve of this and will easily say so. Free speech aside, there is a thing called good taste and decorum and I want the Republicans those of us on the right to always stake that ground out and leave the mud for the lefties.

Good morning, Michael,

Sad to say, you're in the very small minority in your wish. From such as "left wing liberal scum" to accusations of "hate" whenever anyone critices either Bush himself, or any of his cronies, or . . . I guess we have to call them "policies" . . . the responses on various pages of this forum alone show that.

Of course, as one writer insists, they are ONLY "opinions"; and they are part of "free speech", a shibboleth that "conservatives" always invoke for themselves, but are loath to consider as anything even remotely approaching a universal guarantee for others. Even citations of contrary polls, articles, and the like are dismissed with the contempt customarily found when listening to Limbaugh rant.

But, thanks anyway, for at least trying to get some measure of substance - rather than nothing more than "opinion" expressed as being characterization of person - back into the area of discussion.

06:10 AM

Perhaps you would be willing to explain where demeaning, degrading, and insulting personal attack ends and "PC nonsense" - or "PC madness" - begins.

Many on the right idolize Coulter. After the 9/11 widows comment, David Horowitz said she is a "national treasure".

Correcter,

If you did any reserach...you would have found out that Coulter..caused a big stink at this same CPAC conference last year...when she referred to Muslims as "rag-heads".

THEY INVITED HER BACK.

So, don't give me this crap about the GOP trotting out all their prominent apologists to say that they don't agree with her...after she's already shot her mouth off...again...just like they knew she would when the asked her back ..in the first place.

If any of these GOP'ers were really embarrassed by or didn't want to be associated, they would refuse to show up at any event where she is invited or they'd use their clout to get her disinvited.

They knew she was going to cut loose with a big stinky mouth fart because that's what Coulter does! That's her schtick. She's got only that one note to her repertoire. She says mean, hateful things to get her name in the press. It's the way she gets media attention to sell her latest volume of tired, regurgitated, plagiarized rhetoric.

Coulter is just a pathetic bottom feeder. She doesn't believe in anything except getting rich by selling crappy books. She knows that conservatives will pay hand over fist to read her mean-spirited diatribes. She understands that most conservatives are just closeted haters so she's all too happy to make a fortune saying all the hateful things they wish they could say but don't have the courage to.

God Bless the Dixie Chicks..They clearly understand our Constitution better than ANYONE on the right..Hitler would be proud of the tactics the right has so successfuly used for years . Check it out, he claimed to be a Christian to help him in his quest for power also, but at the same time, he ordered all "faggots" to the same camps he sent the Jews to.
Ann, baby, get help (rehab perhaps?)

For the grave crime of criticizing the President, the Dixie Chicks alienated their conservative listeners, and subsquently are now enjoying record sales and seven Grammies awarded in 2007. Conservatives sure taught them a lesson.

Interesting how Earl can bring up a the NJ governor but fails to mention Mark Foley and his appetite for children. Convenient omission of closet Republicans by those who pride themselves on their homophobia. Where's your proof Earl that Edwards is anything other than a devoted husband? In civilized societies these kind of unsubstantiated claims would be considered slander but we know that civilized dialogue is not considered a conservative virtue.

Mel Reynolds (D) - Is charged on 12 counts actaully having sex with a 16 year old page and sentanced to 5 yrs in prison. Gets a few mentions in the news but other than that, nada.

Everyone knows the name Foley. Very few have ever heard of Reynolds. Why is that again?

It is an unfortunate fact of life that few of us can resist the temptation to throw barbs. They are content-free,, information-free and intelligence-free. They are not intended to persuade anyone of anything, but they give the BARBarian, and those of like-mind, the same sense of satisfaction as they got when they were school kids on the playground calling each other names.

But at least some, like Corrector, at least punctuate their barbs with real information, as he did when he pointed out the there are authentic Republicans who did criticize Coulter. Then, of course, you also have people like CAN I GET AN AMEN, Great Scott and just saying just don't want to leave the school playground.

Posted by The BARBarians on March 19, 2007 10:15 AM

The Corrector is going to have an extremely difficult time selling anybody that Ann Coulter is in some way distant from the rest of the republican party. Ann Coulter is exactly the heart of the republican party, and all of the party's major players know this. They share the same "values," the same goals, and the same strategy to attain those goals.

By keeping the masses more concerned over areas of perceived masculinity than facts, conservatives know they will be able to keep the "NASCAR" base which has led them to victory over the past decade. When you know the majority of your party (or should I say, people who vote for your party) is more likely to chug a beer than do any kind of in depth news reading, you have to make your statements short, attention getting, and memorable. This is exactly what Coulter/Limbaugh, et al do every day.

Next November, do you think anybody will care about these federal prosecutors, Walter Reed, etc? Do you think last November people cared about the war in Iraq? No. They cared about the republican guy who was gay. Ann Coulter is a constant attack on the masculinity of the left, and for this reason she will always have a central place there.

Republicans who honestly believe that Coulter isn't a major cog in their own machine are too stupid to understand how their party gets and holds power.

Posted by Grog on March 19, 2007 10:27 AM

Ann Coulter is the same wench that recently advocated that some Federal Judges should be poisoned. This is the statement of a real class act who speaks for the Republicant Party. As for the remark of Corrector in regards to knee-jerk-hate-filled leftist idealogues, he more aptly described those on the right. Corrector also fits the right in a number of other ways such referrence to "an ignorant lefty tool. This is typical of the right as they cannot refer to any they differ with unless they resort to name calling. Strange when some like Wench Coulter makes remarks such as she does, it is okay with the right but if someone else does it , it is a terrible thing. Wench Coulter is one of the top spokespersons for the right and they for the most part love her.

Polarized is no Surprise

Ann Coulter has called 9/11 widows “babes,” a derogatory term she wouldn’t want said of her, and felt stumped when trying to find a word other than faggot to either describe Sen. John Edwards, or his staff. Alan Hevesi (ex-NYS Comptroller) thought the President’ life would be in danger if he came to New York and Howard Dean said the only place for Blacks in the Republican party is in their wait staff, even though we have a Black Secretary of State and a Supreme Court justice (Clarence Thomas) and former General (Colin Powell) supported by Republicans. Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh mimic anyone who they don’t like, an action a few Nuns vociferously remind grade school students is uneducated and low class. Al Franken simply calls those he doesn’t agree with “big fat liars,” and the Vice President tells Senator Leahy to go “F --- himself.”

Is it the 24 hour news cycle that has brought these vermin out of the wood work, with their blood thirst for publicity regardless of what appalling thing being said as long as their name is printed right?

I do know one thing – the uninsured are growing, health costs are skyrocketing, tuition costs are twice the annual inflation rate, rents grow regardless of the economy, and people are more and more in debt – AND NO ONE IS DOING ANYTHING.

Do you really have a lot of hope in the future – the near future?

Where is all this self righteous indignation when vile homosexuals like Rosie O" Donnell spew their venom at Christians or others.

Ann Coulter is being vilified like she commited a murder. Since when is telling the truth a slur? Poor insecure misfits that think they deserve special rights and do have over the rest of us with their phony "Hate Crimes" law. Since when has it become a right not to be offended?

What's more hateful than what really goes on in the homosexual community that the media covers up that quite a few Americans are not aware of or your "Agenda" would soon come to a screeching stop!

Posted by The Shoe On The Other Foot on March 19, 2007 01:25 PM

The difference Shoe, according to Bushbashers anonymous, is that for people like Rosie or Bill Maher it is perfectly acceptable to spew hatred because they are comedians (I guess you could consider the View comedy since it's so laughable). But if you're a writer, who votes Republican, you're hatefilled homophobe.

Apparently your line of work can get you a free pass as long as you lean left.

With the exceptions of a few people who like the idea of fouling the airwaves with expletives, those "defending" Coulter do nor really attempt to defend her but instead try to deflect attention away from her by pointing to someone else with that old canard, "well, what about so-and-so". It's a way of avoiding an issue.

Posted by jfl on March 19, 2007 02:21 PM

Boy, this guy Shoe is really a misfit. I feel sorry for him.

Posted by on March 19, 2007 03:10 PM

Shoe,

All right. What IS "more hateful than what goes on, etc.,"?

How do you know this is "going on"? By experience? If not by experience, what do you offer by way of proof that it is "going on"?

What "Agenda" are you talking about? Again, sir, how do you know what this alledged "Agenda" is? By experience? Or by any other form of actual personal participation in the setting, or implementation of such "Agenda"? And if not by experience, what do you offer by way of proof that such "Agenda" exists?

Rosie O'Donnell is an entertainer. Ann Coulter purports to speak for a political party. There is a significant difference in the impact of their presentations.

Telling the truth is, of course, not a slur. However making unsupported "poison pen" type accusations concerning any individual, or group - such as you do - is a slur. And one who then identifies another person as being a part of the "poison pen" aassociation does slur that individual.

Or is it just your own lack of knowledge of the basic difference between lie and truth that we see here?

Posted by Colin J. Guthrie on March 19, 2007 05:11 PM

Thomas, why in the world would you EVER think conservatives would come to the defense of Edwards? Hello? Anybody home? It doesn't matter what anyone said or did to a liberal candidate, conservatives are NOT going to rescue the lefty. It is what it is. But you do get a B+ on your rant. Ciao baby!
