Senate Iraq debate
Thursday, March 29 at 12:01 AM

Jackie O'Brien of Lakewood writes:

Great photo coverage of the Colorado Senate debate hearings regarding Iraq (March 15). Especially expressive was the photo on page News 24 showing 22-year-old veteran Don Ottoway after his touching testimony about his personal war experiences in Iraq and how the resolution sends the wrong message. The look on Ottoway's face as Democratic Senate Majority Leader Ken Gordon places his hand on Don's back says it all. It appears that Gordon may have a knife firmly placed in Don's back at the same time his mouth is spewing the Democratic Party rhetoric of supporting the troops, blah, blah, blather. I can imagine the young soldier couldn't wait to get home to take a shower. Sen. Ron Tupa's and Gordon's political futures depend on our failure in Iraq; they prefer to declare war on the Republicans and our president rather than Islamic terrorists. Are you proud, Colorado?

READER COMMENTS

Yes Jackie: I am proud. Bush claims to be the decider when in fact it is the people who are the decider. The majority of the people of spoken: The "Shrub" from Texas needs to be neutered if not impeached. I'm not a democrat; I am registered Independent not (not) spewing the DemoPublican rhetoric. I watch PBS and can't bring myself to watch when they announce the dead soldiers sent to fight terrorism that did not exist in Iraq. r22037yahoo

Where's the criticism of all the other nations of the world who are facilitating the debacle by not taking a position? What is their plan for Iraq if we leave?

Funny you should mention that Bob; just yesterday Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah hit the nail on the head when he denounced the American military presence in Iraq yesterday as an "illegitimate foreign occupation". Abdullah insisted that only when Arab leaders unite will they be able to prevent "foreign powers from drawing the region's future."
So much for being greeted as liberators, haha!

All the more reason for Americans to stick together and demand international support.

This is a tired, worn out topic. It's been 4 years since Republicans first tried the "don't question what we're doing or you're sabatoging the troops" line. Obviously it was a winner, and it played great.

Either Jackie O is just now discovering what she considers a foolproof argument, or she's a simpleton with nothing of value to add to the debate.

Oh, and I bet old Don Ottoway feels a lot better BEING HOME than getting shot at for no reason at all.

If people like grog want to be taken serious here they should get up to speed on why we're in Iraq rather than thinking its all for no reason at all.

You're right KW. We are there to ensure access to oil is not blocked. Check out the think tank that Cheney started.

Who takes KW seriously?

It's unfortunate that the debate gets soiled with remarks such as Jackie's asinine comment about Gordon sticking a knife in Don't back. What would be more apropos is to say that Jackie is sticking a knife in the back of freedom of speech, and in the back of not just the right, but the absolute necessity. of dissent. Are the American people, who strongly oppose President
Bush, sticking a knife in his back? Or is he sticking a knife in their back?
