Sexual abuse of children
Wednesday, April 4 at 10:14 AM

Jeb Barrett, Denver SNAP leader, writes:

The conviction of Timothy Evans this week for sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust underlines again how dangerous it is for us to trust someone just because he is a minister or priest. It should also make us wonder how many other youngsters Evans and other priests have assaulted and what their superiors and priest friends knew of their activities.
Archbishop Chaput states that he knew of Evans’ offenses before he removed him from ministry in 2002. Why then didn’t we hear about it until 2006 when charges were filed in Larimer and Jefferson Counties, and has he actually been laicized? Until Catholic dioceses open their personnel files to reveal truthfully how they have handled reports of sexual assault, there is no reason to believe anything they say about being responsive, responsible and concerned about the safety of children.
I do hope that someone will gain access to the Timothy Evans personnel file to clarify if Chaput did indeed come forward with information when he first learned about it, or if he waited until national media pressure, and courageous victims started going public with the truth of their betrayal and abuse by clergy.

The sexual abuse problem in public schools, both male and female teachers, is a much bigger issue then in the church. It is wrong regardless of which institution the person represents. The bottom line is children should be protected and their abusers punished. Schools are just as guilty as hiding abuse as the church.

Yeah and they sentenced a teacher to 16 years for molesting a student at his school.

He served just a few months and is now out and free to roam again. He must have been in bed with the judges ugly daughter or maybe the ugly judge.

I am sick and tired of sex offenders getting light sentences. When is our legislature going to pass Jessica's Law 25 years to life ,first offense for abusing a child 13 and under? The would rather have a sex offender out in our neighborhoods and they think our children will be safe if they are registered and they have their e-mail and screen name. How stupid is that?
There is no cure for these monsters except death. They kill children everyday.Everytime the molest a child they kill that child inside for the rest of their lives. Our children serve a life sentence and the predators get to live their lives without nightmares and fearing everything. They get to live their lives without shame and guilt.
Most of the sex offense are done by family ,friends,a person the child knows,or a person in the position of trust. Not the boogeyman on the corner in a trench coat looking like a child molestor.
The state needs to pass Jessica's law and be able to charge anyone with the same offense that knew about the abuse. For example a mother finds out a boyfriend molested her child . She does nothing or kicks him to the curb and does not notify authorities. When it does come out the mother should also be charged as an accessory and subject to the same sentence,25 years to life.

Right know there are 9,000 registered sex offenders in Colorad. That doesn't include the ones that have not registered, the one's coming and going, the illegals, the ones not caught yet,and the one's that have been accused but not prosecuted because of the statute of limitations, like my stepfather.

I found out 2 years ago he molested a cousin of mine many years ago.I was notified by social services because I have 2 girls. At the time he seemed very interested in one of my daughters.Looking back I could see he preferred my one daughter over my other. He was alone one time with her. That was the last time. When I found out about the abuse of my cousin and told him I was warned to keep him away from my daughters he said , So What? I told him to drop dead and never contact me or my children again ,not even if he dies. I never want to hear from him or of him again,he is dead to me.Thank God my cousin finally came forward after all these years. I hope she can get to a better place in her life. She saved my daughter from a lifetime sentence of torment and saved me from a lifetime sentence in prison had I found out he touched my daughter. As I look back know he had all the classic signs of beginning to groom her for abuse. It still makes me sick to this day just thinking what could have been.
