Shopping carts
Tuesday, April 3 at 1:04 PM

Florence Michael of Denver writes:

I need to go shopping for groceries. This is not an option, as I must eat to live. I get into my car with air bags which are mandatory, even though I may have my neck broken if it ever goes off. I fasten the seat belt which the law says I must do. I had to add an adjustment to keep it away from my neck.
These laws are made to protect me from myself and the bad drivers no one seems able to get off the roads. The new non-smoking laws are said to protect everyone from everyone else. If the legislature has its way, I will soon even be able to wander into a place specifically designated as a cigar bar and not have anyone smoking a cigar.
I arrive at the store and select a shopping cart. A woman near me selects one and plunks her toddler in the cart. The child’s shoes are filthy, his nose is running, and his hands appear to be sticky with some sort of goo, and his pants appear to be wet. The kid stands and climbs around in the cart holding onto the sides. I begin to wonder what has been in the cart I selected before I got it. What viruses or bacteria were spread by some child in that cart where I am supposed to put food? Yes, I can and do wash produce, but should I also disinfect cans, boxes and jars?
How many people catch colds, flu, or worse due to this unsanitary practice? Is there anyone in our legislature that would have the pure guts to propose legislation outlawing children in normal grocery carts to protect me from their diseases? Could we not make it mandatory that those with small children use special carts with safety seats or those built like cars and leave the normal ones to the rest of us?

Nice try on the whole "dems want to legislate everything" talking point.

Most grocery stores now offer sanitary wipes you can use to wipe your cart with.

I'm quite sure my health has been far more adversely affected by other people's children and their germs than by any smoke. I think banning people's children from public areas makes at least as much sense as a smoking ban.

Posted by on April 3, 2007 06:55 PM

Is this a belated April fools joke? You are kidding arn't you?
Seeing as how kids and teenagers are the cause of so many of society's problems, I propose that legislation be drafted that would outlaw both children and teenagers. This should take care of the problem once and for all.
How about it Colorado Legislature Dems, are you up to the task?
Ban kids and teenagers, not assult rifles.

Like Ms. Michael, I have wondered about sanitary conditions in grocery stores and their carts. This is especially true after I watch what other people do in stores and other public places. They leave half eaten food laying on shelves, wads of gum, and other debris are casually tossed aside. Of couse, Tbone's suggestion to use the wipes is definetly a good one.

But I can't help but wonder if corporations haven't become too permissive when it comes to the behavior of their customers. These companies tolerate uncivil and boorish behavior just so they can get the customers money. It would be nice if companies enforced some basic standards of behavior. The world might be a little more tolerable for it.

I think they should turn all of us into robots and put prozac and ridolin in the water and we can all be zombies together! I guess no one in this sanatary world has an immune system any more. If you are that worried about it get the wipes and wipe down your cart.

Posted by pagen on April 4, 2007 05:12 AM

Would that we had a sanitary wipe that could clean the air of smoke that smokers put in the air. Then we could all be happy.
Wash your hands, wipe down your cans and such and don't sweat the small stuff. Humans lived in alot worse conditions and some how we came throught it pretty well. We need some of those germs to give our bodies some protection .

Posted by Ann on April 4, 2007 06:56 AM

There is a sanitary wipe for smoke Ann, it's called a free will. Don't go to places that allow smoking.

Posted by on April 4, 2007 07:12 AM

Well...since the law is on my side now....I don't really have to worry about your happiness ,do I?

Posted by Ann on April 4, 2007 07:20 AM

You never did, how do you possibly try and claim to be anything but a far-left socialist, who thinks the greater good is better than individual freedoms.

Posted by on April 4, 2007 07:26 AM

It just kills you that I'm a repub doesn't it? What? You don't think repubs care about their lungs and their rights to enjoy the same establishments as you?

Posted by Ann on April 4, 2007 07:28 AM

well ann you can have all the establishments that I once enjoyed as I no longer enjoy them because of your anti smoking ban.
all of the old places I enjoyed had enough air purifyers to make it safe for anyone, but the closed eye of the dems and the do gooders only saw the small mom and pop places and called it a huge problem for all. so please tell us why so many mom and pop bars are closing if you are enjoying these establishments? I guess it is because you only wanted to go to the fancy ones and only now and then. If you want non smoking that is your choice and if I want to smoke that is my choice. Now with government in the choice business we dont have a choice.
Since you are very big on non smoking and always talk about second hand smoke, I am sure you can answer this question I have had and every one ignors.

Ann, for a person to be hurt by secondhand smoke, what size of room, how many smokers and then number of times they light up in a specific time frame, and duration must a non smoker be in that room to have any health issues? Also what type of ventalation does the room have? Ignore your famous response of the smell and answer the question on health issues and not on the smell.

Posted by Earl on April 4, 2007 07:45 AM

That's the point, Ann. You don't have a RIGHT to enjoy someone else's establishment.

Where do you come up with the things you say?

Posted by Mike on April 4, 2007 08:03 AM

I can only speak myself on this part of the issue. Any and all smoke bothers my respitory system. Period. No room would be big enough in your ratio question. thats why I'm particularly pleased with the ban. Add in the fact that I detest the smell on top of the fact that I cough and gasp arround smokers , should pretty much settle the question for you . No?

If you're so afraid of dirt and viruses, perhaps you should lock yourself in your house and never go out. After all, it worked great for Howard Hughes.

Or maybe you should buy yourself a hyperbaric chamber and sleep in there. After all, it worked great for Michael Jackson.

Or maybe you could wear a spacesuit when you go out. Hey, it works for the astronauts.

Or maybe you should just wash your hands frequently and use a little common sense. After all it works for everyone else.

Posted by Common Sense Guy on April 4, 2007 08:36 AM

Those sanitary wipes wor, wor, wor...acHOOOO! Worked fine for me.

Posted by KW on April 4, 2007 09:31 AM

Look, Im not saying I know whats best for you ( but I do) Im not telling you what to do (but I am) soon I will control everything.. what you eat, where you work and what you drive. You will be happier for it and you wont even know it. Free will is a farce. You fret for your projects, fret for your lattes, fret for your prozak. Dont you want the burden of decision put on someone else? Most of you cant even raise your kids right much less take care of yourselves. I will take care of that for you.... No need to keep up with the Jones's because you will all have the same things. We will all be happy and the sun will shine. Just submit. All I require is that you kneel. !!!!! lol ya kooks

Earl--

Can you name some of the mom and pop bars that have closed due to the smoking ban?

Thanks.

Posted by Tbone on April 4, 2007 10:23 AM

Don't you get it? It bothers me, I don't like it, it's bad for me. Why is it so hard to see that your only purpose on this planet is to serve me?

Posted by Stann on April 4, 2007 10:29 AM

ann, your act is getting tired. This is not about you, nor are you even on the right topic. Please stop trying to make yourself the center of attention on every thread. Get another hobby. "Diversify yourself for God's sake!"

Posted by on April 4, 2007 11:00 AM

Ok, this letter writer scares me. She reminds me of the mean old lady in the neighborhood that used to terrorize any kid who walked by her house and stepped on so much as one blade of her grass.

Hey 11am: You have the right not to read my posts. You can't stop me from my say. Kiss my beautiful ass.

Posted by Ann on April 4, 2007 12:10 PM

My goodness, Ann. The depth on your last post was astounding. What's your next move, beating up bloggers you disagree with and taking their lunch money at recess?

Posted by a casual disinterested observer on April 4, 2007 01:17 PM

Well...what about it wasn't true? That person doesn't have to read my posts. That person can't stop me from having my say.
Whats got your knickers in a twist? The fact that I told that poster to kiss my ass? Poor baby...new to messege boards are ya? Thats mild comparatively. And I 'd say the same to anyone trying to tell me I haven't the right to speak up .

Posted by Ann on April 4, 2007 01:30 PM

Mmm. Your rant was fascinating, but how about dialing down the sanctimony and trying civil discourse for a change? You seem proud of the fact that adolescent behavior is the norm on these boards. I would humbly submit that is a poor source of pride and encourage you to be part of the solution, not the source of the problem.

Posted by a casual disinterested observer on April 4, 2007 01:34 PM

Have you ever heard the term narcissicism Ann?

Posted by Blogger in favor of medicating Ann on April 4, 2007 01:37 PM

Excuse meobserver...but have you been reading the posts? There is no civil discourse if you disagree with the anti ban people here. If someone can't stand the heat...they should get out of the kitchen. I have no qualms about giving back as good as I get. If you are looking for civil discourse...I humbly bid you to go to Disneyland.com...the happiest place on earth. Maybe that would suit you better.

Wow, n-Ann-y, that has to be the stupidest thing I have ever read on these threads. Great job, ditz!! Keep on spreading your Commie propaganda with the finest wit and tact. Doing a great job so far, dumb-ass!!!

Time for Ann to go masturbate!!! I feel so sorry for that vibrator . . .
Well, better that hunk of plastic than the schmuck that was foolish enough to marry this waste of estrogen!

Ann - you make me want to reregister as a democrat.

Posted by KW on April 4, 2007 02:42 PM

kw: That you don't bother to say anything to the other rather oiutlandish poster tells me you already are a democrat!

Posted by Ann on April 4, 2007 02:46 PM

Don't bother reregistering KW. Dems aren't any better. You should just abandon all politics and do what's best for you and your country.

Posted by Shane on April 4, 2007 02:49 PM

Mr no-name; you have issues. Far scarier issues than not having your nicotine fix .
Seek help...you are stepping off the deep end.

Posted by ann on April 4, 2007 02:58 PM

I think I'm in love with Ann! No name needs to go to school I think, he's late.

Posted by TR on April 4, 2007 03:04 PM

Well, well, n-Ann-y, you have given up. I am so disappointed that you have! You did not even show me how I am wrong in characterizing your views! That only tells me that you cannot, and that you have deep and dark issues that you project on everyone else to make yourself feel more normal. Well, n-Ann-y, you are assuredly nothing even near normal. Nay, you are a confused little girl lashing out at a cold and unfeeling society with invective and malice. And you have the chutzpah to get offended when people are malicious back to you!! What a pathetic specimen you are, little girl. I humbly suggest that YOU seek out professional help, and soon. Your inherent internal contradictions are being divined by many people around here on this thread and others, and we can see through your Commie crap dressed in Republican clothing. You are fooling no-one anymore, n-Ann-y. Give it up.

Posted by on April 4, 2007 03:06 PM

You're right Shane. Each party has their share of fringe moonbats. It'll be easier to just ignore Ann. But I'll be sure and light up whenever I think she is near.

Posted by KW on April 4, 2007 03:26 PM

I don't give up. Nothing you can say or do is capable of making me give up. you are pityful. I would have to care about what you think . You could never be worthy of that. Take you meds. Smoke em if ya got em, lol.!You sound like you could use one.

Posted by ann on April 4, 2007 03:35 PM

"Narcissisism" is a word that fits you nicely, n-Ann-y. Simply put, NOBODY cares even a little bit what you think. To think that to be "worthy" of something from you is a blessing is a side-splitting joke!! Wait, wait, still laughing . . . still laughing . . . still laughing at YOU, n-Ann-y. What a self-important Commie you truly are! Let me guess, it's all about YOU, YOU, YOU. Once again, NOBODY cares about you, or about your filthy Communist propaganda you spout (save of course for the other health Nazis out there, but who gives a rat's-ass about them either?). Well, n-Ann-y, take you and your Communism back to North Korea where you belong. And if you keep your BS up, don't EVER be surprised to be hated right back with equal virulence, you lousy waste of DNA.

Posted by on April 4, 2007 03:45 PM

Narcissism is the word that need to be up there.

Behold: Ann, the self-important yet ever-inconsequential Communist! I can't wait for her list of how to live life correctly just like n-Ann-y!!

And BTW, n-Ann-y, just who exactly died and made your stupid ass God?

Posted by Ann on April 4, 2007 04:15 PM

Hopefully not like you, though. You get it out every day and you are still the same, old, tired, hateful Commie. Time for a new method, n-Ann-y. And I am NOT your f**king "sweety"; not now, not ever.

Posted by on April 4, 2007 04:18 PM

Uh...is anyone from RMN monitoring these posts? If I wanted to read a lot of cursing and childish back and forth (and I don't), I'd head over to Craigslist Rants & Raves!

Posted by mytwosense on April 4, 2007 04:22 PM

They did monitor one of mine. I said a naughty word.
No-name: You 're what ever I say you are. Got it nimrod?

Posted by Ann on April 4, 2007 04:31 PM

"ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME!!!!!!!!!! ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" -Ann

Once again, n-Ann-y, I don't give a f**k about what you think. Much less about what you think I am Got it, Commie?

Posted by Better dead than n-Ann-y on April 4, 2007 04:34 PM

Well, they're not monitoring enough. All I can say is that it takes absolutely no courage whatsoever to trade insults with a total stranger on the Internet, and some of you are ruining a good thing here. Not all papers allow you to add comments to the Letters to the Editors section.

Your insults and ugly words to each other are the Internet equivalent of graffiti.

Posted by mytwosense on April 5, 2007 12:15 PM

I think I wore him out.:-)
The ananomity of the net does tempt some of use to cross lines. Thats part of the fun sometimes.
i disgree with you mytwosense. Sometimes some real good comes out of these little clashes. Showing one side or anothers mindset it good info to know and remember. Reminds you what you are up against.
Some things just are debatable in a calm reasoned way. And how boring if all we get to read is we all agreeing with each other. Thats just a circle jerk in my eyes.
One of the reasons these ban threads last into sometimes the hundreds of posts is people ( like me ) who spend alot of time answering the rants of the opposite side.
Its just some bloeing off steam. You are so welcome to bypass it all if its below your standards . I certainly wouldn't be offended if you did.
lighten up ....its just a small thing in the big picture.

Posted by Ann on April 5, 2007 12:29 PM

Nyet, n-Ann-y, I shall not be worn out. I am waiting, comerade, for you to finally admit that you are nothing more than a Communist. The state dictating personal habits and the machinations of private business is your bag. You want to increase the scope of government power and you want the state to interfere more deeply into the lives of citizens. No matter what you call yourself, you are nothing more than a Commie pig-fascist, dressed in Republican clothes. How detestable and pathetic.

Here, let me translate this for you: ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME!!!!!!!!!! ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cease Fire! is it safe to come out now? Can you believe that this pitched battle of words and insults came from "adults" ? By the way does anyone remember what the subject of the letter that, inititated this nuclear exchange was, not that it is really important at this point. Thank's RMN for providing a safe venue to air disagreements on, rather than having them duke it out on the street with guns and knives and who knows what else
