A familiar solution
Many won’t remember, but 20 years ago we had an immigration crisis.
There were an estimated 2 million people in this country illegally. The congressional parties “solved” the problem by finding a compromise: citizenship for those already here, and more money for the Border Patrol.
Today we have an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants. Congress wants to “solve” the problem with another compromise: citizenship for those already here, and more money for the Border Patrol. Sound familiar?
In another 20 years we can go through this all over again. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.
Joe McGloin, Sheridan
Joe,
I do remember 1986 and the great Amensty that Kennedy and everyone else passed. Reagan admitted several years later that he made a major mistake by signing that. Kennedy now is standing in front of the public with his lies again. 1986, Kennedy stated that Amensty would NEVER be given again and that our borders would be secured, What a crock of lies he told. Well the border was never secured and here he go again with him wanting to grant AMENSTY to 12-20 million illegal uneducated, stealing identities, forged documented carry aliens. I wondered what would happen if 12-20 million US Citizens refused to pay taxes, would we get AMENSTY? Good laugh, lawbreakers only apply to illegal aliens, and another good laugh, they get rewarded for it.

And this is exactly what the politicians hope for. To quote "Ronny Raygun" as he is derided by libs, "GOVERNMENT IS THE PROBLEM".
Anyone that believes some politicians are going to solve this problem believes in the Easter Bunny.
Posted by clyde on May 21, 2007 07:44 AMWho, then, is going to solve the problem? A howling lynch mob in the streets, perhaps?
Posted by Old Grouch on May 21, 2007 08:35 AMPam and clyde,
The only thing either of you got right is the fact that Reagan is responsible for the illegal EMPLOYER problem, as it was his administration that decided to quit enforcing laws that fine companies who hire illegals. He also was responsible for allowing scab (non-union) people to be hired to replace union members beginning with the Air Traffic Controllers, it was a turning point for which our country is still paying a hefty price.
I was a union member in the construction industry at the time, and I lost my job during Reagans watch because the company I worked for started hiring illegals as soon as they realized there would be no ramifications for doing so. (Been on a construction site lately?)
Also, clyde, anyone who believes that corporations give a damn about working Americans will soon find that they don't. It's not in their nature. You can't blame a shark for being a shark. The reason government had to begin regulation in the first place is because people were being exploited.
Reagan was proud of the fact that he didn't make decisions himself, because he "Let other people do that" .Therein lies the problem, Reagan was a no-talent ,B-grade actor who was used by smart, greedy bastards who hid behind their corporations and pulled his strings.
Sound familiar? W Bush is a no-talent,cocaine-fried idiot who lets "other people do that" when it comes to making decisions.
GOVERNMENT IS NOT THE PROBLEM, GREEDY OPPRESSIVE PARASITES (Read GOP) who gain control of our government, are.
Pam and clyde, when your job is outsourced or taken by someone who will work for less, you only have yourselves to blame.
I bet you both shop at Wal-Mart too.
Old Grouch, be careful what you use as an example, you just might get it.

Posted by RickyLee on May 21, 2007 02:09 PM11:27 AM,
I've been reading the letters, and replies, at the head of this line. That's why I picked the example.
Posted by Old Grouch on May 21, 2007 03:47 PMI remember the 1986 amnesty, and it was wrong then, wrong now, and any further amnesties will be wrong too.
Let's not forget the Mariel Boat Lift where Castro dumped his undesirable criminals on the USA, which was stupid enough to take them in too.
I see DPS is planning on closing 30 schools to save money. These facilities will become shuttered eyesores (e.g. Roush Elementary in Adams County) to the neighborhoods they are located in. I propose that DPS lease the closed schools to ICE to be used as deportation detention facilities (DDF). The schools could easily be converted into such a purpose. Of course people will cry NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard); but before you cry NIMBY, remember this...illegal aliens are criminally living in your midst now. At least in a DDF, the illegal aliens would be in a supervised facility while awaiting deportation.
The same thing could be done to shuttered military bases around the country.
I've seen a number of something like 18,000 new border guards being needed and trained. We don't need new border guards as we have well over 100,000 highly trained defenders of the United States stuck in Iraq fighting the Shrub's revenge war. Re-deploy as many troops as needed to secure the border and give them the authority to defend the country instead of being quartermaster corps clerks as the National Guard troops along the USA/Mexican border are currently being ordered to be.
