A red flag for America
The most significant fact in Jean Torkelson’s piece on Hispanic immigrants and Catholicism (“The changing face of U.S. Catholicism,” April 26) is that Hispanic members new to St. Joseph’s parish on Sixth Avenue wanted a Mexican flag on the altar along with American and papal flags.
The pastor had to remove all the flags in order to avoid a confrontation with immigrants who wanted to bring Mexico with them while they earned money in the United States that Mexico could not provide.
Eventually the political correctness that prohibits Americans from calling a Mexican a Mexican will fade and the tidal wave of millions of Mexicans crossing our southern border will be controlled.
The big question is: Will our culture, including religion, be destroyed before then?
Robert H. Feeney, Littleton
The Catholic Church will do anything it can to get more members who will foolishly give money to the church to fund the Pope's art collection habit.
The church doesn't care about where these members come from, the laws they break, or the poverty the members live in.
Posted by QBT on May 7, 2007 12:39 AMWhat do you want to bet, that these "immigrants" put nothing in the collection plate as it is passed around at mass each week. They demand much but will not contribute . They expect we honkies to foot the bill.
Posted by on May 7, 2007 01:05 AMHell, they take FROM the collection plate!
Posted by QBT on May 7, 2007 01:07 AMThe Catholic church has become a bastion of unethical hypocrites. The Catholic leaders speak of tolerance while their tolerance is only self-serving to enrich their parish. Whether it's pedophiles or illegal immigrnats, the Catholic Church sees no immoral depth it cannot acheve.
Posted by on May 7, 2007 04:53 AMCatholic church is and has always succumbed to this deadly sin,if not all of them. Greed. As a former parishoner, we have taken sides on this issue. We have sided with United States sovierngty and proud U.S. citizens who no longer accept the invasion of our great nation by third world hordes, especially from Mexico.
Posted by RMS on May 7, 2007 06:47 AMHow vocal and how strongly would the Catholic Church be standing up for illegal immigrants if they were Buddhist Chinese? Or Islamic Arabs? Or Hindu Indians? Does anyone with an ounce of intellectual honesty think that the Catholic Church would not take an exact opposite stance on the issue of ilegal immigration as they would not be seeing any financial reward from it?
I speak from experience on the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church - having been baptized as one 50 years ago and also with a relative who is a priest. ( a non-molesting one).
The Catholic Church and this administration both have shown there hatred of the American workers. Whats that saying? "What you do to the least of these you do to Me." Hey, did you hear that wages are even going down in mexico. if you want to make fair wages --- go to America.
Posted by FW on May 7, 2007 07:21 AMThe Catholic Church and the illegal immigrants dishonor this country with their intent to break the laws of our land (illegals) and to harbor and encourge (Catholic Church) those who do break the laws of our land.
A shameful pairing for America and her citizens!
Posted by A on May 7, 2007 09:02 AM"Render unto GOD that which is GODs, render unto Ceaser, that which is Ceasers." The church does ignore this little statement that even Jeasus said the laws of man should also be followed and only the spirit should be the church. As far as immigration, I will help all those who do it LEGALLY, if done illegally, I dont care what your belief is or where you came from. You should be arrested and "Rendered unto Ceaser".
Posted by Nick on May 7, 2007 09:34 AMWant to protect the USA, start standing united against illegal aliens. Join Numbers USA, call your Congress persons and Senators and tell them--- NO AMENSTY. It is time to start standing united Americans or you can kiss your way of life goodbye, and there will be no one to blame but yourselves.
Posted by on May 7, 2007 09:53 AMMichael has in his family a non-molesting priest. I think it is better to err to protect the children and assume otherwise just as Australia does which mandates a chaperone for children when they are in the company of a priest. I received a letter today from one of my friends, as a result of attaching my name to my comments, on the subject matter far too long for posting. I will forward it to you if you so desire and you can forward it infinity.
Posted by Richard Grimes r22037@yahoo.com on May 7, 2007 10:10 AMOne very small ray of sunshine:A recent study of Latinos showed they attend RC church less often here then they did at home. Two reasons were floated as to why (1) not so much social pressure from family to go every Sunday and (2)Non-believers were free to skip religion completely. Also more birth control and smaller size families here then back home.
Some one should tell RC their people are breaking away when they get here. Maybe the Church will not be quite so eager to promote this migration.
Posted by Sharon B. on May 7, 2007 11:37 AMAfter reading Mr. Feeney's letter, I can only come to one conclusion: I should be pooping my pants. Where are the Depends? After reading most of the comments slamming the Catholic Church, I'm guessing most writers are unfamiliar with the church's doctrine--(readily available even to a non-Catholic like me) either that, or they don't care. The Catholic bishops are part of a very small group of leaders in our state taking a moral stance on the issue, all the more remarkable in the face of the typically thuggish and stupid comments made on this thread.

Are you a parrot? You quote word for word what other postings have said, then question their intelligence. Who appointed you as the "Truth" ? I believe you to be some sniveling liberal, who thinks he is better than us unwashed ignoramiouses.
Are you going to quote what I have posted word for word Truth? I believe you live in a make believe world, where you see your self as the only rightous person on the planet, whose mission is to "enlighted the rest of us. Your utterings should be relegated to the crapper, not ours.
Come now, Redneck, Truth does make a point of posting at least one non-insulting, debatable argument out of every hundred posts. Give 'em a little slack.
Posted by No use on May 7, 2007 12:42 PMImmigation text: jobad@yahoo.com> sent, saying “forward it”: Dear Editor, says Rosemary: So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this land is made up of immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests we should tear down the Statue of Liberty because the people now in question aren't being treated the same as those who passed through Ellis Island and other ports of entry. Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr.. Lujan why today's American is not willing to accept this new kind of immigrant any longer. Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the United States, people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York and be documented. Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times. They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home. They had waved good bye to their birth place to give their children a new life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one culture. Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor laws to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity. Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out. My father fought along side men whose parents had come straight over from Germany, Italy, France and Japan. None of these 1st generation Americans ever gave any thought about what country their parents had come from. They were Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan. They were defending the United States of America as one people. When we liberated France, no one in those villages were looking for the French-American or the German American or the Irish American. The people of France saw only Americans. And we carried one flag that represented one country. Not one of those immigrant sons would have thought about picking up another country's flag and waving it to represent who they were. It would have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here. These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an American. They stirred the melting pot into one red, white and blue bowl. And here we are in 2006 with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by playing with a different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement card and a guarantee of being faithful to their mother country. I'm sorry, that's not what being an American is all about. I believe that the immigrants who landed on Ellis Island in the early 1900's deserve better than that for all the toil, hard work and sacrifice in raising future generations to create a land that has become a beacon for those legally searching for a better life. I think they would be appalled that they are being used as an example by those waving foreign country flags. And for that suggestion about taking down the Statue of Liberty, it happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the immigration bill. I wouldn't start talking about dismantling the United States just yet. Signed: Rosemary LaBonte MAY GOD BLESS AMERICA
Only three closing words are erroneous: God had nothing to do with America. His biblical chosen people were Israelites (Jews). Our constitution not only excludes god but bans him in Art. 6:3 No religious test for public office and implicit is Keep Church State Separate. Manifest Destiny (God's Mandate) means Mass Exploitation resulting in bloody campaigns and genocide. Jesus Christ plans for a sacred genocide on his 2nd Coming; however, this does not extend to humans killing each other in the pursuit of land.
Maybe Ms. LaBonte (or whoever is the professional writer behind her letter) should write a book, as she's taken it upon herself to rewrite history. I like how "yesterdays immigrants" are portrayed as having one view, one mindset, and doing one thing, all pure as the driven snow. And of course there is the strong implication that "todays immigrants" are completely the opposite, albeit, too, of one view, one mindset, and one doing. Thanks for the schlock, Richard. Any other infomercials you want to share with us today?
Posted by anderson on May 7, 2007 01:10 PMI applaud you for reading intensely the extended epistle. The change I'd make is "Melting Pot" to "Stewing Pot." Get it?
Posted by Richard Grimes r22037@yahoo.com on May 7, 2007 01:55 PMImmigrants didn't light the fire under your stew, nor did they fan the flames. Someone else is stirring the pot. Oh, and it's been stirred before--part of the history conveniently left out of Ms. LaBonte's account.
Posted by anderson on May 7, 2007 02:27 PMI don't get it. You sound like Keith, no insult intended nor is it implied though such a comparison is suggestive: Sorry.
Posted by Richard Grimes r22037@yahoo.com on May 7, 2007 02:43 PMAnd what is so far fetched about illegal alien Catholics taking money out of the collection plate at Sunday mass?
Good grief, they steal identities, forge documents, lie, cheat and steal in far greater numbers as a percentage of the population than non-brown people. Therefore pilfering from the Pope's art collection fund is a minor little infraction that the priest will forgive at next confession.
Posted by QBT on May 7, 2007 11:01 PMYo QBT: The last time I went to confession I said to the priest: "You go first." Seriously though:
By attaching my name I've made two friends and believe it: Both believe in the Risen Christ whereas I believe in the Risen Ape. I am embarked as a deicide to slay their transmogrified being and we each respect each other's opinion. It is a sign of civility.
Posted by Richard Grimes r22037@yahoo.com on May 8, 2007 10:50 AMThe last line of Feeneys letter, he asks if these immigrants will destroy our religion. Most are RC. Last time I looked that was Christian so what does he mean?
RG,
shegod was a funny line, don`t belileve in Her either. Just throw Her name around to get a reaction.
Also it is snarky fun to write Her, She etc with caps like He, HIs . You know.?
If the culture of Latin America took over Colorado (color red) how would we know?
When we sit in Dos Hombres eating tacos, drinking DosXX, we might miss it.
Course I know all that talk about third world cultures and guess shacks and outdoor plumbing are comming soon.
