Dave Niles and the residents of Buffalo Ridge, Avon, write:

Recently the town council of Avon proclaimed that nobody living outside of the town limits matters to us. If you are not privileged enough to live in Avon we have no concern for your well being. This is why on Tuesday April 24th the town council voted unanimously to end bus service to Buffalo Ridge and the Traer Creek shopping district which includes Wal-Mart, Home Depot and the Traer Creek Plaza. Their reasoning was that these areas do not pay taxes to the town of Avon therefore the town cannot afford to subsidize the bus service. This despite the fact that Traer Creek does pay over a million dollars in taxes to the town every year. In addition many of the residents of Buffalo Ridge work at businesses in the town of Avon helping to make them profitable and allowing them to pay taxes to the town of Avon. They also shop at the stores in Avon paying sales taxes which a portion of which go to the town of Avon. Many employees of the companies located in Traer Creek live in the town of Avon and also shop there. Yet the town council still insists they are subsidizing our bus service without any benefit to the town and so they coldly eliminated what amounts to a life line for many residents. They effectively have said you don’t matter to us. Therefore we comtend that the town of Avon does not matter either. We are actively calling on anyone who does not reside within the town border of Avon to boycott the town. There are many great shops in Places like Beaver Creek, Edwards, Vail, Eagle Vail, Eagle, Gypsum etc. that would be happy to have your money and business. We see no reason to continue to pay taxes to a town that only cares about a portion of the people who support it. We will be contacting media outlets and publications to get the word out that the town of Avon does not need you. They can subsist without you. It will be interesting to see if the operation of this one bus route will cost the town more than the lost revenue to businesses and the town does. I would imagine the 800 residents living at Buffalo Ridge alone taking their business to Traer Creek and other towns will make a huge dent. The town started bus service to this area last summer without being asked to. They somehow found the money to fund it then but now claim they can’t afford it. The question then is: are they incompetent or lying?
We are sorry it has come to this.
