Commerce City & NASCAR
Tuesday, May 22 at 11:01 AM

Jacob Cook of Morrison writes:

In regards to “5/17 NASCAR takes a pass,” what is Commerce City thinking? NASCAR is the fastest growing sport in America. 60,000-200,000+ people pile into tracks every weekend to watch 190mph billboards flash by. They do this while spending hundreds to thousands of dollars in travel costs, hotel stays, dining out and of course, purchasing souvenirs for both the event and city they are visiting. 80 million people watch races on tv on a weekly basis, that’s a lot of advertising for Colorado industries. This is a huge loss to Commerce City and to Colorado in whole. CC was worried about their image two months ago and wanted to change the name. Well, here was an excellent chance to start improving a city in much needed help. Oh, noise you say is also a problem. I forgot you chose to live by an airport that operates 24/7. Races are only 3-4 hours long. And what a better place to put a track where 200,000 people can visit at one time, (Close in proximity to major highways and an airport only a few miles away.) This was perfect for Colorado. Nice job Commerce City in getting the ISC to take their money elsewhere. I only hope they will consider Morrison, CO. Bandimere Speedway is half a mile from my house. I love the crowd, the noise and the money that comes with each event. There is plenty of land in Rooney Valley, let them come to a side of town that does not need an image improvement.

Perhaps you should move to the South where this redneck sport is really popular. Colorado has never been and will never be a major support of this sport. It was tried in Colorado Springs and failed.
You know the old saying....garbage knows garbage.....and Commerce City knew exactly what they turned down.

Actually, Bennie, the track in Colorado Springs (for the very brief time it was open) tried to be all things in the race world and didn't do much for NASCAR. I agree that Commerce City has given up an incredible opportunity, because there really are plenty of fans here.

Let the fans and NASCAR pay to build the track. If they don't want to, then maybe there is no real demand after all.

If Aurora government has any brains at all, they will try to get the track built there.

Bennie...the track in Colorado Springs was bought by the same company wanting to build the track in Commerce City...they did that for a reason...

We hear people all the time complaining that we should be able to get the superbowl here. And how much revenue it would bring to colorado. Well having nextel cup come here it would be like having a superbowl every year. Only with twice as many people attending. For those that live out by where the track was to go you moved out by one of the most busiest airport in the country. DUH. So you have to put up with a little traffic and noise a couple times a year. If your that hungup on quiet you should have moved to limon. THIS IS A MAJOR CITY WITH TRAFFIC AND NOISE EVEN NEXT TO AIRPORTS. GET A LIFE!!!!

NASCAR? Denver is considered one of America's most intelligent cities having more college graduates than any other city. This is NOT NASCAR country.

This is not NASCAR country so Lefty says. Does Lefty not know that shopping on Furniture Row helps support our local team who is Sponsored by Furniture Row. Yes, that's right. A NASCAR Nextel Cup team is housed and sponsored right here in Denver, CO. Bennie, The track in the Springs did not fail, the same owner (ISC) sold it to build a track in Denver so the track would be closer for those of you who do not like to drive out of town. They were making it convenient for everyone. But you are right, garbage does know garbage. I was glad to hear ISC pulled out of the Commerce City land. Now let's chear for Aurora. I'm sure most would people would prefer to visit that city anyways.
