Controversial hamburger
Thursday, May 24 at 11:30 AM

Brian Stuckey of Denver writes:

Customers are fully justified in demanding the retention of the wopburger at the Blue Parrot. After all, it has been a tradition at the restaurant since 1919 and is popular with many of their patrons. If I understand it correctly, it is the business of the Colacci family to call it what they will. James Gambino and the National Italian American Foundation may disagree, but it is hardly their place to run the family business. We hope that the Colacci family will reconsider its decision to accede to critics’ demands for political correctness and retain the wopburger as it is. In the long run, pleasing the customers is really a much better alternative than appeasing the critics.

Can't believe I actually agree with you on this one, Brian.

Who really gives a damn about a lousy hamburger!! This is one of the stupidest letters I've ever seen! With all of the important things going on right now this willy-jack is concerned over a GD hamburger??

The world is coming to an end, Brian Stuckey actually made a point.

this is the type of subject that Brian Stuckey should stick to. He knows nothing about politics

The word "Hamburger" comes from Hamburg, Germany; the inhabitants of this city are also known as "Hamburger" in German but as Hamburgians in English. As of member of twice defeated, resting, but not reformed German Volk...I demand lving space from the restaurant for such a slur to the Master Race

There's to many people out there that need to get lives. It gets real old having to walk on eggshells so we don't offend someone or something. One day it okay the next day it's not. I tell it like I see it and I'm not going to change. I'd love to quote a lot of good ole quotes, but this page probably would get bogged down.

Dale,

Oh! How one wishes for the days of the old Ed Sullivan show, and someone such as Myron Cohen doing a stand-up routine!

Just two brief thoughts from the Bard.

What fools these mortals be!

So much ado about nothing.

The only minorities allowed to be offended by anything are blacks and Hispanics.

Everyone else can go suck eggs.

Way to draw that line in the sand, Stuckey. Think what a mess this country would be in without guardians such as you.

jojo
its not about the hamburgar, its about the racist name. There is a reason many second generation Italians do not speak thier own language, (IT WASNT POPULAR TO BE A MINORITY) so the language was not passed on.Unlike the spanish everywhere today.
dale, its not eggshells, its called RESPECT.
when the Imus comments came out, were jojo and you dale standing up for him, telling folks to get over it, its just stupid comments there are more important things going on, NO i guess you both didnt, what , scared of being called racist?
Hey Sgt, the sandwich is called HOPburgar.

Mae, you take things much too seriously. My post was with tongue firmly planted in cheek. I meant to show where another thing...i.e. the word "Hamburger" came from...and that almost anything could potentially offend anyone. I suggest that we all become like Kurt Vonngut's character" Harrison Bergeron(opps there is a variation of that other name again) and chain ourselves body and mind and not say or do anything that might offend in the smallest way anyone. Also mae, did you substitute the H for a W in your misspelling of the food item. Also, the Italians should be thankful that the restaurant did not name it after Benito Mussolini(another stellar Italian)...BTW how come the Italians do not get upset at the name "Caesar Salad".?
Lastly, Imus...OK, not an apporiate comment...but angst comming from Sharpton reminds me me of the old saying "look who is calling the kettle black"...read about Sharpton is his acidic tongue. Also, why is OK for blacks to use the term "Ho"(perhaps they are really referring to the gardening too) and not anyone else? Lastly, Imus thought me one thing...until then, I never knew that Mr. Magoo's old alumni: Rutgers had a basketball team.

Still think it is a stupid post. People should thicken up their onion skin and quit trying to be so PC.

ROFL-- Leroy, your absolutely correct but you forgot to mention Muslims. Offend them and get your head chopped off !

Hurray for the Wopburger, long may it live.

For several decades now, the Blue Parrot cafe has had this particular burger on its menu. For just as many decades - and a few more as well - there has been a large, proud, and active, community of Italian ancestry in the Metro-Denver area . Indeed, over the years, the Denver Columbus Day parade has often been the one with both the largest number of participants as well as the one with the largest attendance along the parade route.

For decades, NO ONE in the Metro-Denver community of Italian ancestry has made a fuss about the name of a burger on the menu in one of the leading cafes specializing in Italian cooking in the area.

Then, one day in 2007, an individual from New Your City walks into the cafe; and he gets all uptight about this bit of trivia. Where the several thousand people of Italian descent in Metro-Denver have never been bothered by it before.

DUH! What in hell is all this damn fool fuss about, anyway!?!

The greatest thing we should fear is not fear it's self, although when that was said by president Franklin D. Roosevelt it might have been true. The real and obvious fear we should be aware in this generation is this insane fractionalzation of our country that is growing due to the various factions in society, be they racial, political, agenda driven or social, that insist on obsessively searching for something to get offended about. If this continues the inevitable result will be a society so wrapped up in trivial confusion the truly important things that detrimentally effect society are ignored which opens the door to even greater governmental intervention and, ultimantly, the Big Brother Government described by George Orwell in "1984. "

Thank you, Mr. Campbell,

It is a pleasure to read the work of someone who also sees beyond the cheap, and simplistic, arguments based on nothing more than labels, into the reality that our society's problems are complex; and that they require thoughtful consideration, and meaningful dialogue. I only wish there were more of you interested in this forum.

At my first place of employment, we had the informal Italian holiday known as WOP (With Out Pay) Day for anyone who failed to call in sick on a regular basis.

I'm glad the Blue Parrot grew some nads and told the Politically Correct crowd to stuff it.

Check out www.casadice.com for a restaurant owner who is Politically Incorrect! My kind of joint.
