Democrats & taxes
Thursday, May 10 at 10:31 AM

Larry Harrison of Lakewood writes:

During the 2006 national campaign did Senator Harry Reid, current Senate Majority Leader, or Representative Nancy Pelosi, current Speaker of the House, or any other Democrat mention even in passing that tax increases would be in the offing were Democrats to gain control of Congress? Have the American people been informed in a meaningful manner by the mainstream media that the Senate and House have been moving deliberately forward in their budget considerations to effect the largest tax increase in American history? The Heritage Foundation estimates the proposed budget would seize $899 billion more from Americans than is taken under today’s tax rates and increase the average household’s taxes by $2,641 annually. Has the public been openly advised that the Democrats as part of the proposed budget will reinstate the marriage penalty tax, change the child tax credit from its current level of $1000 to $500, increase the tax brackets substantially in every bracket (for example, the lowest 10% bracket would increase to 15%), permit the estate tax rate to return to the 55% level in 2011, and pursue new schemes to make paying your taxes even more onerous, to identify just a few of the proposed changes? Speaker Pelosi stated during an appearance on CNBC’s Kudlow & Company in October 2006: “...fiscal responsibility is a key component of our agenda.” There is an obvious disconnect between the Democrat’s talk and their walk.

Option A: You pay for the crap you use now.

Option B: I pay for the crap you use once you retire and begin whining about how all your social security money is gone, and why won't the government help out with your old fogey medicine.

Extreme deficit spending costs way more in the long run, but I don't expect that will cause many of you to rethink your small, short-sighted opinions to help out those you will rely on when you retire.

i'm sure that this is not the last of the tax increases that the Democrats have in store for us.... I mean all the politicians need a raise to pay for the illegals they employ and all the houses they own and the jets they fly in. Next we will see a substantial pay raise for congress and if it is below 10% I will extremely surprised.

I'm sure someone will be posting here how raising my taxes is actually good for me.

They'll also tell me the dems in congress are protecting me from foolishly spending money I didn't really need anyways.

Gosh, what would we do without congress?

Larry - the Dems were actually smart this time. They didn't really need to campaign at all on what they wanted to do. They let the anger at the GOP do all the work for them. It worked.

Hold on to your wallets, folks. It's going to get ugly.

Higher taxes is what the dems meant when they said we needed a new direction.

Pelosi has now changed the rules again after claiming she was going to make congress toe the line with unnecessary expenditures.

She eliminated several requirements so congress could use military aircraft over the Easter recess, 13 in all at a cost of $10,000 per flight.

She has also removed the newly placed ban (Jan 07) of congress accepting free flights from lobbyists saying as long as the congressman has a personal relationship with the lobbyist offering the flight then it's ok.

This was all done with a voice only, midnight vote that she hoped nobody would notice.

Anyone care to back up this lying political screed with some facts?

Everything I've read about Democratic plans for tax increases includes keeping the popular tax cuts involving marriage penalty, Earned Income credit, 10 percent bracket, etc.

To increase the estae tax rate to 55% (on this largest estates) all the Ds need to do is exactly NOTHING!!! Since the dishonest Repugnant congress and Shrub's tax cuts of 2001 sunset so as to hide their true budget busting nature.

I'll eat my words if you can show where the Dems want all taxes increased, and the others claims asserted by Larry. He cites Heritage, but their website doesn't show such a plan.
