Dems’ anti-war actions ‘anemic’

A recent Associated Press article called the bickering between Congress and the president over Iraq a “showdown.” After I peeled away the layers of hyperbole by Democrats, I realized that the agendas of President Bush and Congress regarding Iraq are in fact very similar.
Both are committed to maintaining U.S. empire and controlling Middle East oil, but with some slightly different strategies. The Democratic budget was a “war as usual” bill.
What did the Democratic bill do? The bill fully funded and continued the war for another year and left tens of thousands of U.S. troops in Iraq for years to come. Dates for withdrawal of troops were totally nonbinding and the bill lacked any enforcement measures.
Of course, the Democratic leadership wants the people to believe that their anemic actions demonstrate important steps to end the war. But I, for one, can see through their deception and their efforts to make their pro-war actions look anti-war. Unlike Congress, 65 percent of the people want the war to end.
The fastest way Congress can do this is to stop the funding and bring the troops home now.

It must have been a democrat who refused to sign a bill that included timetables to begin to stop the war.

The problem is the Republicans and the media, with the Democrats help, successfully cast the funding question in this way: Supporting funding meant supporting the troops and not supporting the funding meant not supporting the troops.

Who really believes that with the funding cut off, Bush would have left the troops in Iraq and they would have run out of bullets in the middle of a firefight?

De-funding the troops meant they would be coming home, not that they'd be hurt because they ran out of money.

Unfortunately the Democrats played into this as usual, undercutting their own bargaining position by making guarantees such as "we're not going to defund the troops" (nice poker face there Sen. Obama). And so the debate was played out on the foundation of this false premise: that defunding meant hurting the troops rather than saving them.

It says something about the quality of political dialog in this country when such an important debate can play out in such a fundamentally dishonest way.

Too bad for the troops and their families.

I just love to hear the GOP talk tough. If I only Boy-George, Billie Mae Owens, Mitty, Rudy, Thompsons, Cheney, Lott, etc., had been in Vietnam. They still play loose and fast with the blood and treasure of poor and working class families. Where are the local GOP celebs for Boy-Geroge's war? I can't find St. Elway or the Mastermind. They must be busy packing off their blood and treasure to college of the NFL. Its' un-American.

Right on the money, Charles.
Once again, the Dems failed to master the spin game.
Pisses me off to see these people so inept at countering the right-wing noise machine, and at the same time, so timid about doing what the majority of voters in November sent these guys to Washington FOR.
I really wish there was a viable third party, because I'm disgusted with these jokers.
Perlmutter is the only guy I'm glad I voted for, because he stuck to his guns on the funding vote.
The Dems had better pull their collective heads out of their asses if they want to have a hope in hell of retaking the White House in '08.
It depresses the hell out of me to contemplate another Republican president, especially the likes of McCain, but so far, I ain't too thrilled with the Dems, either.

Why can't this Independent find similar sentiment in both parties concerning the oil in Iraq? Perhaps it is because Republicans own the oil rigs and Democrats work them; hence, both have a vested interest in occuping them.
