Douglas County injustice
What kind of message does that send? It’s OK to be negligent while driving — working on your computer while driving and kill someone but its not OK to let off firecrackers on the school grounds?
Admittedly, this Ponderosa student was making a bad error in judgment. But it seems that he is being unfairly treated and potentially prosecuted as law enforcement and some in the community are reacting to OTHER events that have their nerves frayed.
That is not justice. This student’s case should be considered on its own, separate from other school incidents as he had nothing to do with those.
There are definitely knee jerk reactions going on here.

As much as I want to disagree with the writer since bringing firecrackers to school esp. on that particular day was beyond stupid, I must agree that the punishment doesn't appear to have fit the crime.
Nor does the other instance she presented, whose in charge here?
What the kid did was indeed, stupid, but he doesn't deserve any felonies on his record for that. Maybe if he blew something up, or threatened other students. Good letter Barb.
Posted by Jay on May 1, 2007 03:13 PMA good lesson for the kids. Life isn't always fair and stop making excuses for bad behavior by comparing it to another example of bad behavior.
That is the problem with parents and their children today. Instead of taking responsibility for what THEY did, they find excuses for why their behavior wasn't that bad.
So stop raising a bunch of little overindulged brats, and stop making excuses for their behavior. Let them suffer the consequences and maybe ,just maybe we will have a kid that grows up and contributes to society not destroys it and runs to his parents to enable him his whole life.
