Grace Church opts for ‘historic integrity’
Letter writer Chuck Theobald frames the situation at Grace & St. Stephen’s Church in Colorado Springs as a conservative-liberal clash (“Episcopalians find a way forward,” April 20). But it is a far larger and different issue. The issue is what Scripture says.
For the 2,000 years of Christianity and the 473 years of the Episcopal (Anglican) Church, thousands of biblical scholars have held to Scripture’s bedrock beliefs of the Virgin birth, Jesus’ resurrection, his being the exclusive path to salvation, and the following of all of his commands, including sexual proscriptions.
In a mere 20-plus years, the Episcopal Church has questioned or denounced all of these. For decades, Grace’s rector and vestry have attempted to retain the historic integrity of their worship within the Episcopal Church despite its hierarchy’s redefining core beliefs.
The best Anglican scholars studied some of these in 1998 and concluded they were without scriptural merit. Undeterred, the Episcopal Church has continued its walk apart. Finally, Grace Church had to follow Scripture’s admonition to “choose this day what God to follow” and they chose to stay with the wisdom and faith of 2,000 years.

RMN Editors,
Why are you printing crap like this?
I I were to write an impassioned screed about disunity in the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster would you print it?
Posted by Charles B on May 3, 2007 07:39 AMThe Bible also says, "Slaves, obey your masters." Shouldn't the Episcopal Church return to its "bedrock beliefs" and condemn Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass and as sinful, anti-God rebels who disobeyed their masters and ran away?
Oh? You want to pick and choose which of the Bible's commands to follow? Sorry, not allowed. If you're going to condemn my gay and lesbian neighbors for having the gall to live and love as God made them to, then surely you must also condemn Tubman and Douglass for believing that they belonged to themselves, against the Bible's clear instruction.
Posted by Katja on May 3, 2007 08:12 AMKeep gays and women "in their place" - there's some "historic integrity" for you. The Episcopal Church better not let these whackos steal their church building as well.

Posted by Richard Grimes r22037@yahoo.com on May 3, 2007 09:07 AMYou just can`t keep people from growing up and questioning dogma. When they do toss dogma the result will be a better country. With equality based upon knowledge of each others differences. Legal differences (please save beastiality, pologamy , human sacrifice for another day).
Imagine giving birth as a virgin. You women know what i`m talking about.
Posted by Sharon B. on May 3, 2007 10:52 AMInteresting letter. All full of justifications for walking out and breaking one's Canonical promises and obligations - while at one and the same time trying to hang on to the valuable real estate to hand over to a foreign Bishop; this one an African, who has violated his own Canonical promises and obligations by invading other Bishop's Jurisdictions outside his own country to grab the spoils.
Odd, that no one heard a word about "following sexual prescriptions" when Prince Charles - who is next in line, under the 39 Articles that created Episcopalianism in the first place, to become "Supreme Governor of the Church on Earth.". But after all, that was HETEROsexual adultery. And he was a Prince to boot.
Oh! Well! As the old song goes:
Gimme that old Je$u$ Bu$ine$$!
It'll make a pot of money for me.
(You know the tune.)
Ooops! Slipped a line there.
Should have read:
Odd, that no one heard a word about "following sexual prescriptions when Prince Charles, who is next in line - under the 39 Articles that created Episcopalianism in the first place - to become "Supreme Governor of the Church on Earth", was making hay (not at all discreetly) with his mistress.
Posted by Old Grouch on May 3, 2007 01:36 PMOG, we Anglican Catholics, I once was one, high church as well, don`t push religion very much. There is a great book called"How to get to heaven without being religious" by an AC. Claining 2000 years of history for this baby church is funny.
Posted by Sharon B. on May 3, 2007 02:20 PMThank you for your excellent letter on the Episcopal Church. As you suggest, the church has indeed fallen away from its Biblical roots in recent years. Your point is well taken.
Posted by Brian Stuckey on May 3, 2007 03:50 PMGorblimey!
