More and more want into Cory Elementary
Tuesday, May 1 at 3:31 PM

As a parent of three children who have spent their elementary school years at Cory Elementary in southeast Denver, I was quite surprised to read the April 17 negative portrayal of Cory in “DPS losing 12 percent to private,” part of the Rocky Mountain News’ series on Denver Public Schools.
At Cory, our children have experienced all of the joys of learning, just like the children pictured at private schools in the series. Yes, Cory has received excellent scores on the CSAP, but long after those test scores have been forgotten we will treasure the many creative, fun and challenging things our children have done. Plus we are part of a true community of diverse, enthusiastic learners and commited, supportive families.
Every year, the number of neighborhood children attending Cory and other southeast Denver schools has increased, and the waiting list for children wanting to opt in to these schools grows longer and longer. There is a reason for that: these schools are a remarkable bargain.
Like many other public school families in all parts of the city, we love our school dearly and have never felt that our children have received less than an excellent education there. I would be happy to give a tour to anyone who would like to take the time to visit a public school and see firsthand all of the wonderful things that can and do happen there daily. And to the newspapers in town, please consider this a personal invitation to cover all of the incredible nonathletic events that DPS students participate in, including National History Day, Robotics, Mathletics, Spelling and Geography Bee, and Destination Imagination competitions.
