Mortgage mystery
Tuesday, May 29 at 12:01 AM

I was reading the Rocky Mountain News online last week when I saw a picture of Alicia and Tony Flores. The caption accompanying the photo explains that “Alicia and Tony Flores, both undocumented residents, are shown outside their former home in Aurora. They both lost their jobs at Safeway a year-and-a-half ago because they did not have proper documentation. They have been leaping from job to job since. Their home will be auctioned in July.”
I want to know how they ever obtained a mortgage. If they are undocumented, how could they buy a house on credit? No wonder hard-working Americans are ticked off!

Poor illegal aliens. Now Democrats will try and have the American taxpayer bail out the illegal aliens and the mortgage lenders on the American taxpayers dime, wait and see.
They have grocery stores and houses in Mexico too. Time for them to go back.

I agree with Pamela and saying exactly how did these undocumented workers ever get a job and a house in the first place. I own a house a it took months of paper work to finally move into my house. We need to start going after the people who hire and sell thing to illegal workers.

Kudos to Safeway!!! I want to see more and more employers verifying documents and firing those without the proper documents. Everyone who reads this column today should call Safeway Headquarters and thank them and encourage them to keep checking documents. Tell them you appreciate them doing the right thing and will use their business if they keep doing the right thing by not hiring illegals.
This is what we have been asking employers to do. Now is the time to let the employers know the American public appreciates their respect for our laws.

LMM - citizenship isn't a requirement to own property in the US. Just look at all those vacation homes in places like Vail and Aspen owned by wealthy non-citizens (many white Europeans), foreign companies with plants in the US and foreign owned US based companies.

Also, the Patriot Act requires that a borrower's identity be verified by the lender for a mortgage originating in the US. But there is no requirement that the source of funding to purchase property in the US originate in the US - their mortgage could have originated from Mexico.

There's a good chance their mortgage was done by a sub-prime broker. Look at the reasons for the recent sub-prime mortgage market meltdown - many of the sub-prime brokers originated loans that weren't up to the lender's standards for things like credit history, verified income and such so it wouldn't be much of a surprise if these brokers also originated loans where the borrower's residency status was not properly verified.

"Hard working" Americans can buy a house. There are some that just think everything should be handed to them. I worked on a Golf Course 25 years ago and the illegals worked hard. The spoiled rich kids would just quit when a tough job needed to be done.

You get an AMEN and "just sayin'" takes sort of the opposite ground and he gets an AMEN. One municipality hired Americans and all they did was slack off, work a few days at $10 and hour and quit. The municipality hired, I suppose, green card legals, and turned into a happy camper.

I extend an invitation found in this forum elsewhere. See you at the People's Fair.

The municipality paid the green card workers $8 an hour and they are still on the job doing the job with nary a break: Just happy to get the job.

You have to wonder about those who revel in the misery of others.

I am most definitely NOT a “give them all amnesty” type gal. I too would like to see more employers verifying documents and only hiring those with a legal right to be here.

Having said that, I must say I do have a certain respect for the efforts of many illegals to get ahead. I admire the fact that instead of whining about the cost of living, living on the streets or begging for section 8 housing, many illegals do obtain their own housing. I have seen many work together to support each other and their financial goals. Yes, it might mean that more than one family is currently living in the house, but this family is NOT on the streets AND they are NOT crying for a handout.

One last comment, a mortgage is a risk for EVERYONE. Before you sign that mortgage document, you need to be sure that you are comfortable with that risk. Job unstable? I’d think twice. Illegal? I’d think twice. No ability to budget? I’d think twice.

bjs - respect for the illegals who get free healthcare, and because of this our healthcare is going downhill fast, who are destroying our education system, who are destroying the American-way, who destroy our flag or hang it upside down, while waving the Mexican flag, who demand more rights, when they don't even belong here? What the heck is there to respect about that? Try breaking into Mexico and expect the same treatment and see what you get. You speak out of both sides of your mouth - you don't want amnesty, but "respect" those whose way of live is nothing but practicing illegal acts. I have no respect for the illegal alien, only those that come here LEGALLY.

C.L, thanks for your post. Answered one of my questions. Wouldn`t it be nice if more posters were like you?
